Schools with artificial turf

The subject of artificial turfs was just broached in another topic. I certainly understand the pros and cons of it. Pros are safety from muddy fields, a pristine field all year, less maintenance, etc. Cons are costs that many counties can't afford, losing the feel of "real, dirty football, and not being able to dress the field up (lines) for different sports. It seems that artificial turfs are plentiful in the Charlotte area and the mountains area. I am surprised that there aren't many, if any in the Greensboro, Raleigh, and Fayetteville areas, that I know of anyway. My question to you is are there any artificial turfs at schools that AREN'T considered to be Charlotte and mountain area schools? This is mainly for my education, because I don't know of any, but would love to learn if there are.

Basketball Coach Grant Smith @West Montgomery

Haven't seen as much excitement in boys basketball in Montgomery County since the Martin twins, Billy and Bobby. Grant exhibits the same level of coaching style as the twins. He is very methodical as he is a student of the game. He is by far a bright spot in Montgomery County as a role model.and team leader. What a hire? I only wish my older 2 sons could have played for him.

I predict he will turn West Montgomery around in 2 years if not sooner.

East Wilkes Cardinals

Coaches and players, what a great year. JK, thank you for bringing a vision and a plan to Ronda for this program. Players thank you for buying into that vision.

Seniors, thank you for leaving your mark on this program. I know your lives will be taking you into different directions, but when possible reach back out to this program and encourage the future teams.

I would not dare to tell anyone on these boards that East Wilkes will win a state championship in football. I have been around high school football for way to long. I will tell you this for the next several years this program will be in the mix as long as a few things continue to happen.

Work hard, do what the coaches ask of you. Be proactive, seek the coaches out and have them teach you the in's and out's of football.

Keep a level head on your shoulders and be humble. Respect every team and remember that it also takes good health to continue to play well. Ask and trust the Lord for safety.

Have fun. Never let football become a job, but keep it a game. Enjoy the ride as you are only young once. Have fun.

Next year will be fun. We lose several great seniors, but we also have a ton coming back. This team started at least 4 sophmores and there is a strong junior class in place. I would give a slight edge to Wilkes Central, however East should be right there with them. WC, East, Starmount, Ashe, Alleghany and West should all be well. Alleghany was so young this year, but that program has potential.

Sure wish it was the beginning of football season again.

Hoggard @ Hillside

Hoggard travels to Durham to take on Hillside. These teams last met in 2007, Hoggard won 29-14 on their way to a state championship. Hoggard is coming off an upset of EE Smith and Hillside hammered Person for the 2nd week in a row. Hillside has a very good defense and a special RB. Hoggard has leaned on their defense all season and post a balanced attack on offense and play fundamental football. Hillside will be a double digit favorite in this one. Hoggard will have to slow the run and be able to throw effectively to pull the upset. Should be fun.

County Dominance

Just something fun and random to talk about just to kill time. Edgecombe County is batting 1.000 with all three teams still playing during turkey season. North Edgecombe, 1A (7-5), Tarboro, 1AA (12-1), and SW Edgecombe, 2AA (12-1), are all playing in the third round, with two hosting. Duplin County has three of four in, with two being serious contenders. Would love to hear about other football hotbeds.

East Burke @ East Lincoln

Wow, business as usual for EL but only 3rd time ever EB makes 3rd round. These 2 teams last met at EB in 93' with EB winning a close one by 2 pts. That EB team only won 3 games that year that being one of them. On paper this looks like a brick wall for the Cavs with no chance what-so-ever but I wouldn't write em' off. This is a tough bunch of kids with a lot of heart an mean little running back in Clark.

Will be a huge honorable game for Coach Brown if anything. I can't see EB keeping it that close but good to see spirits high for the Cavs this season an tonight.

Been a long time coming for EB to have a game with a Lincoln co school.

Thoughts??

Shelby Lion

You look great, bro, lean and mean. Your infamous, countless bags of Cheetos, putting cheese on everything, and post game whoppers must come in serious moderation now. Anyone out there and on this board who have mentally thrown in the towel should see you and be inspired. Keep it up, man. You look younger, too. Great seeing you and Kane last night.

Kinston

This is a two part response to tonight's NE/Kinston game.

1. Hats off to Kinston for capitalizing on the breaks that fell their way tonight.

2. They exposed our weakness with that middle screen...NE should have picked up and adjusted but they did not. Good game planning Kinston coaches.

3. The qb #17 was like a timex watch, took a licking and kept ticking. Someone said he wasn't getting touched...well ask him...he should be in a bucket of ice tonight..but he hung in there and flung that ball. My son popped him SEVERAL TIME early, but he adjusted and got rid of the ball in the 2nd half.

4. #32, 56 and 66 are GROWN MEN on that defensive front! Gave us fits all night.

5. #80...the first female kicker that I have seen get actual playing time in a big game....nailed her kicks like a pro!

6. And finally, #1...the smallest man on the field....and the QUICKEST! He hurt us with that 50 some yard run when we had him boxed in on the sideline...great run.

#4 Northeastern vs #1 Kinston

On to round 3! #1 Kinston seems to be a tall order based off of their record. I see they like to run a 4 receiver set, and sometimes send a man in motion. They also like to run a few trick plays, like the hook and ladder they ran successfully against AG in round 2. Out of all those receivers, I haven't seen one the likes of #25 from Hertford County, so the NE dbs should have plenty opportunities to pick off a few. The Kinston defense reacts very quickly to the ball, so I would run some play action or misdirection plays early and often against them. If NE receivers come to play, I see them having a big game, because stopping the run will be a priority for Kinston. So Eagles, practice hard and smart this week, and study that film.....and let's get the job done this week. Alot of people dont think you can keep doing it, but keep flying under the radar and do your thing. Go Eagles!

spare me

speed seed speed that's all I hear..last time I checked we will be on a football field not a track for a track meet...and believe it or not franklin will show up Friday...after reading the message boards last year we almost forfeited but decided to show up and play against al that Monroe speed and well ill be we just happen to win. make no mistake if mighty Monroe loses again to little ole country franklin id be ashamed...but I guess since have already got the buses and don't have anything else to do Friday we will show up for the track meet and hope a good ole fashion football game breaks out...its david vs goliath and we all know how that story ended

Man up!!! Who ya got???

2A West
1 Shelby 40
12 Mount Pleasant 20

6 Lincolnton 30
7 Mountain Heritage 14

2A East
1 Kinston 22
4 Northeastern 36

2 SW Edgecombe 35
3 Fairmont 28

2AA West
1 Monroe 32
4 Franklin 12

2 East Lincoln 28
11 East Burke 14

2AA East
1 TW Andrews 28
4 Clinton 34

2 Bunn 40
3 East Duplin 20

My 2A/AA picks. I will admit that my knowledge of the west is slim, so it's more or less making an educated guess based on records/schedule. I don't know what any of the teams there run on offense or defense, and I know nothing about their personnel. It does seem to me that at 8-5, East Burke is better than their record indicates. My goodness, they have Crest, Shelby, and Kings Mountain on their schedule. That's 3 losses right there for anybody. Plus, they have a 1pt season opening loss. It's almost like you can excuse 4 of their 5 losses. Coupled with the fact that East Lincoln lost Surrat, who was a huge percentage of their offense, that game might be closer than the records indicate. Back in the east, I think Bunn just has too much offense for the Panthers to keep up with, and one of these years, Bunn has got to get there. They are one of those high flying regular season teams, just to crash in the playoffs. Dang, that sounds familiar.(Im looking at us) And whereas Andrews has struggled against the 16 and 9 seeds, Clinton has been able to score at will vs more evenly matched teams. Hanging 40 on one of the east's best defenses last week was paramount. I think SWE continues to move the ball at will, as it has done throughout the season, minus the turnover parade vs Washington, and I think that they get to Fairmont's impressive QB in a manner that they have not seen thus far. I don't think we will be able to stop their air assault, but slowing it down and getting two picks should suffice. And yes, Northeastern, I picked you to win. God, help me.
