Cleveland County

Just a thread to discuss happenings around the County with regards to the football programs. There will most likely be comments from the peanut gallery (SPRaiders78) but we can all agree to pray that his fingers fall off.

I can’t speak much to KM or Burns or Shelby so if any of you guys feel froggy jump on in.

Crest,

A lot of interesting things going on at Crest. First thing I notice is that unlike the XL pipeline, the pipeline to Crest is wide open and that that isn’t a joke. The excitement is palpable around the program and a lot of let’s say folks want to join in on the party. Some of these cats from across town know exactly what I speak of. But, even they don’t know it all. Big changes in operations have stoked other changes around the 7 mile radius between Grandpaw and Daddy. The flow of traffic has changed. No one can blame anyone for a directional change from that way but traffic is inbound from multiple directions.

I pondered why. There are a few reasons not just the obvious. The obvious would be a wide open offense, A fantastic coach and staff, and resources are becoming much more abundant. Those are good but by themselves are not enough. I thought about it and I have a few more reasons.

That video taping last year exposed something we refer to as Barney Fifeing. I enjoyed the show every week. It gave an inside look to things that should have been kept inside.

The schedule specifically the conference schedule for Burns and Shelby is a complete farce. Which gets exacerbated if 2A Sate Titles aren’t flowing into Shelby. Burns is on a whole other planet than the rest of us.

Let’s look at it. Kids playing at Crest will play.

I’m looking at things through green glasses but it’s pretty clear to me .There is a lot of buzz about this and that about middle schools and all that. Middle schools… LOL… I remember as few years ago when Crest had a QB down there at CMS and he transferred to Shelby as soon as he hit high school age. It was understandable his dad was a Golden Lion. Well let’s forward a few years Word on the street is that the same thing is happening just in reverse directions. The exact same thing is taking place if what I hear is correct. I might just be hearing bull-crap, but what if what I heard is true? LOLOLOLOLOLOL…………….

I know nothing about KM. I don’t even care. They’ll be around at least until that casino turns that whole place into dung-pile. They need to be teaching a Heimlich maneuver class as mandatory learning over there.

Burns has another decent year left and they’ll be glad to be in that conference after that. That’s my opinion.

Anyway, just ramblings of an old man waiting on football season to come back around. Feel free to take shots I promise I do not care. I simply typed the truth. Times are changing….. Times are a changing…

Happy New Year.

Private School Advantages vs Public.

This year it was Private/Charter Corvain Community that made waves in just its 3rd year of football. A few years ago it was Pine Lake Prep and Mountain Island Charter. Congratulations to them.

I just looked at the Charlotte Observers Statewide Top 10 in BASKETBALL, for each classification.
NO privates in top 10 of Public 4A, 3A Boys, or Girls in 4A through 1A.
Public 2A Boys has 1, Pine Lake Prep at #5.

But, wait for it, wait for it,,,, But in Public 1A Boys 6 of Top 7 are..... 1,2 and 3 are.... Private/Charter whatever you want to call them. And Corvian has just started playing basketball (last years runner up to State Champ Wilson Prep) that returns most of their last year's starters.

Sure am glad those Private/Charters do not recruit/select with in their 25 mile radius or they would most likely have the remaining 4 spots in the Top 10 1A .
I guess it is just easier to Not Recruit/Select in Basketball than it is in Football. But it is coming, I guess, in football as it is in already here in Basketball and Soccer.

And then there is last years Baseball for the 2nd year in a row, State Championship team, Uwharrie Chapter. No recruiting. None at all. I am positive. But my goodness I am not sure how a "small" private/charter outside Asheboro gets that many D1/D2 players including an (reported) 18 year old Sophomore pitcher/short stop that was absolutely lights out good.

Mount Airy did win one of 3 in the Championship Series because Mt Airy had the 1A Pitcher of the Year and College Scholarship player. Won 1-0 with a 1 hit shutout (I believe the one hit is correct), but they absolutely kicked our butt the other two games. Congratulations to them and their NOT RECRUITED Team of all stars.

I am not opposed to either private or charter schools. It is just the unfairness in the way they are set up, the advantages they are given by the money grubbing, profit seeking, on the take right wing legislators that are doing all they can to hurt, if not destroy, public education for the masses (that is all the rest of us).

Sports is just the way the advantages are showing up most often and most clearly at the current time.

More and more the disadvantages are showing up through the criminal cases that eventually hit the newspapers with the disappearance of money, or the various other wrong doing gets reported. The "schools" that do not actually teach, or the hiring of completely unqualified teachers or administrators. Certainly not in all the private/charters schools. But way to often is it happening and the individuals (mostly the students) that are hurt and damaged have almost no recourse.

Sometimes it (the problem) is a long time in coming to light, primarily because there is very little oversight or safeguards legislated. Of course it is not present in every case, but over time, more and more things come to light. Unfortunately the damage done can not be undone when it does happen.

Before any one jumps to high and mighty, I got my Associates degree from a private, non-secular junior college, a secular 4 year university for my undergraduate degree and a state supported public university for my Masters degree. I value my time, and association, at each one of these institutions. Every single day that I was a college student I was also a full time employee somewhere. I paid my way through school. My education was not given to me, not provided to me. It was earned by me, both in the classroom and the work place.

I am not bragging or complaining. Just explaining where I come from in my value system. I have always admired what the Catholic Church has done with its efforts in offering and making available an education option, not limited to just its members. My understanding it was through their on funds and tuitions paid by the students' parents. Not public funds.

But the political desire to destroy public education, the desire to turn public education into a profit opportunity first and foremost, the desire to return to the good old days of segregation, be it race based or economic based, or religious based, is just down right anti-American to me. And it is wrong, plane and simple, to use public tax money for these purposes.

The playing field needs to be flat, and fair, whether it is the classroom or the athletic field. No more, No less.

Have a nice day and enjoy the holidays in front of us.

Burke County hoops

Freedom had a nice opening against Draughn tonight. The boys got a running clock win, while the girls pulled out a workmanlike victory. The Lady Pats have some holes to plug, but they get E. Burke next week and that will tell me a lot about what they might look like going forward. As for the boys, they were firing on all cylinders and got nice balance in their scoring in the win. Amore Connelly threw down two nice dunks and Kobe Johnson also got one. Freedom has depth, shooters and plays good defense and they could go a long way if they'll push the tempo and get their opponent's tongues hanging out. I'll know more about them after they face Hickory and A.C. Reynolds in December.

Let’s have some fun!!

I’ve seen a lot of football over the past 40 so years, so it got me thinking about top players?

What state-wide player from another school would you have loved to see playing for your school?

I loved watching QB Chris Leak at Independence play. He threw perfect passes and just was so awesome to watch. Of course, we were primarily a running team back then. Lol!

What area player from a neighboring school would you have loved to see playing for your school?

Justin Billips was a Ram for a year before he left to go to Elkin. He was one of the best to do it from our area.

WNC Basketball Favorites

Basketball season is about to crank up! Being a McDowell fan, football can never end soon enough for most years!

MAC-

McDowell should be the favorite with big man Rylan Parkins returning along with some other nice pieces and a very good JV team. Reynolds will likely be their biggest challenger once again.

WMAC-

Last season this conference had quite a few teams battle at the top. East Henderson, North Henderson, and West Henderson should all challenge at the top.

Mountain Foothills 7-

Patton won the conference last year but lost some pieces. Hendersonville should be a contender as well as East Rutherford and Brevard.

Western Highlands-

Mountain Heritage has dominated in recent years but Mitchell tied for first last season. Draughn could also play a factor.

Smoky Mountain-

The conference had a lot of parity at the top last season. Cherokee, Swain, Robbinsville, and Murphy have a shot to make noise this season.
