Both Clinton teams opened this 3 game week with a win Tuesday vs Smithfield-selma boys won 71-61 while girls team won 57-48.....Wednesday didnt go to good for both teams as the traveled to Southern Wayne...Girls lost a hard frought battle 54-48....boys game different story as they fell hard to Southern Wayne 68-34 in a blowout.....Girls currently 6-2 while the boys are 5-3......tonight conference play begins vs James Kenan

Without disrespecting SW, I heard coach Davis played everyone in that game, with starters getting limited minutes because of 3 game/week schedule with first conference game being tonight vs JK. Basically sounded like SW win or lose didn’t matter more than rest to prepare JK. Just guessing.

Makes sense hopefully....i saw the score and was like dang on....that same SW team got beat pretty good by Goldsboro who is gonna be tough in conference play

At the game on Friday, good hustle by the team, but something seemed missing....

The struggles on the boys side shouldn't be a surprise losing the production that we lost with those seniors leaving and Xavier Howard transferring once again and the JV team from last season not being that good really....the cupboard was pretty bare besides Lawson,Owens, and Rayner......this has absolutely nothing to do with Coaching......Jordan is right where he belongs 2-4 up there in East Montgomery

Where did Howard transfer to?

Alternative school i heard...yep grades...seems to be a big problem right now along with the one sport specialist......watched a basketball player with a couple scholarship offers from Reidsville make some big time plays on the football field Saturday....until more of these kids round here get serious about the books and stop the one track sport mindset i dont think we will be experiencing any more Championship games in football......too many athletes not playing...same could be said for some other sports aswell

Bad Grades.....seems to have been problem with football and basketball players in 11th grade.

Yep burns me up thinking about the guys who werent on the field this fall...we still did good winning conference without all the dang injuries and those 3-5 guys would of been able to play it could of been us on TV Saturday

Yeah I watched those games this weekend-those teams are just on another level compared to Clinton. Northeastern was as good as advertised. I think the Reidsville player you're talking about is Breon Pass(aptly named). He made some amazing catches. I actually went to the Wake Forest/Vance game and man, I could hear the pads popping in the stands. Clinton has got to get back on track.

I don't know if you remember a few years back when Carlos Pope was coaching JV, there was a kid by the last name of Schmidt I think, that was 6'10 but transferred to Cape Fear Academy. If he had stayed Clinton would have had him at 6'10, Thtaxter Spruill at 6'9 and OJ Jones at 6'5. That 2013-14 team was one of the tallest Clinton teams that I can remember.

I think I can safely say that the boys are not that good this year. Lost 75-23 to Westover.

I see a bid discussion about this going on on social media pretty the state of Sampson County sports in general vs larger counties like Cumberland more so whats happeningat Lakewood....Lakewood got destroyed by Terry Sanford 63-12 the same night Clinton got beat 75-23......its not Coaching...its the number of athletes available and some are pointing to the lack of AAU presence and Pop Warner within the county

I think it's a myriad of issues in addition to the lack or little representation of AAU in Sampson. You can also add some of today's kids are 'me me me' and not TEAM, impact players transferring out for one reason or another and discipline problems(to include grades). I agree, Clinton lost what, 90% of their firepower with the last class? But it was still shocking to see a score like that. I guess Clinton has just been spoiled the past few years as well with the talent that has come through.

Talent cycles, kids move. Sampson county is in a downswing for basketball talent right now.
Clinton had more than their share of talent last year, shame it was wasted.

Yep wasted....now East Montgomery gets to feel that burn

And im not too sure what the Lakewood guys were mad about Lakewood hasnt had a solid mens basketball team since the days of Josh Owens and Zach Faircloth...i think there problem was the football side of things

Westover must be pretty damn good tho i see they undefeated and beat Middle Creek 74-38 so atleast it not just us they beating like a drum

Coach Davis is doing a phenomenal job with the Clinton basketball program. Not only is the talent much lesser than years past, but the kids that are now tasked to pull the weight for this team have basically taken a year off from basketball. Cameron Lawson, Jalen Owens, and Carson Ellis played very minimal basketball last year with the senior talent that Clinton had, and now being seniors themselves, have now basically been thrown into the fire playing big minutes and playing in situations they’ve never seen except from the bench. Saying all that, Coach Davis has a tremendous challenge on his hands, but who better for the job? To add on that, Coach Davis is rebuilding a culture that has been pretty cancerous over the last few years. Instead of building from the ground up, he’s having to tear down and then build back up, which isn’t an overnight process, but you can already see slight changes. I without a doubt know we will see a disciplined and more fundamental basketball team for the future of Clinton basketball. Sit back and watch this team grow this year whether that comes in form of Wins or “Lessons”. Go Horses!

Westover is that good, but also Middle Creek is WAY down this year. Panther Creek and Wakefield are the teams to beat in Wake County this year.

I agree with what you have posted, but I guess in a way I'm part of the "instant gratification" society. It has been almost ten years since I've seen the boys with a losing record, so it's just a bit frustrating. Yes, from what I heard about the former coach, there was a cancer within the team. If Brad Spell was still the coach with the talent the previous coach had, Clinton would no doubt have a basketball picture hanging in the gym, maybe more. I know Coach Davis is a good dude and I hope what you have said will come to fruition.

Clinton men finished out the tournament with a win over South View 74-63 to get back to .500 ending a 4 game skid record now at 6-6....the girls picked up a 57-32 win over Southern Lee after losing 61-55 to Pine Forest the previous night....they are playing Douglas Bryd right now

Thanks to DH34 for keeping everyone updated with our scores. It has been a busy time in Dark Horse nation so I have not had time to get on here.
We have played 3 games a week for last 4 weeks. The football players have played more games than they have practiced. Can't compare this team to the last 3 yrs. It's a completely new team.
Very proud of these guys. We are getting better every game. It is a fun group to coach.
Glad to have a break before conference starts on Jan. 4. Got some injuries but everyone should be ready to go soon. The encouragement from our school and community has been phenomenal.
Lots of teaching and learning going on but as Coach Spell says it, "peak at the right time".
Go Horses!

Yeah I'm sure the guys are tired after playing all those games so close together! Get some rest and MERRY CHRISTMAS to everyone in C-town!

LDH is going to be seeking revenge from last year's sweep by the Raiders. I think this year may be different though. Last year's team really leaned on Alex Canady, then when she was knocked out for the season, the only points mostly came from Ashlyn Williams. This year in addition to Williams is Soph. Isa Banks. And this team is taller too, with 6 players 5'9" or taller, with the twin towers Williams and Banks in the backcourt.
