Catawba Valley 2A Early Outlook

If you go to Watauga and look at the state championship banners they have in their gym you will see that they are mostly* for Track and Cross Country. They used to be great in distance events (maybe because they would train at altitude) and that helped them win those titles. They haven't won championships in those sports in a while, maybe due to a coaching change or maybe because other schools caught on and figured out ways to compensate.
*They do have a football championship from the 70s.
Most of our individual state champions in track at Freedom also played Football: Leon Johnson was a long jumper and sprinter, Khris Gardin and BJ Emmons were both on a championship 4X100 team and both played D1 football and Larry Whitesides won the 110m high hurdles and played some at Carolina. I think there is some cross over because natural athletic ability is something that both sports develop.
Oh I know all too well what Watauga used to
do in track and cross country. They had teams that’d a made North Lincoln cry and pitch fits. Biggest stars to date in their track program were the Taylor sisters, Will Hodges, Abe Morlu(woulda been a nightmare RB/ WR with a good coach), and Ricky Brookeshire. All these guys went on to run in big time schools.

I don't question there is some athletic crossover definitely is. Most athletes are going to play all the sports they can. I just don't fully agree that both sports always correlate into equally great football and track teams. Coming with good coaching you can take a burner on track team and try to get him in the open space on a football field but doesn't necessarily mean he's going to be able to make cuts and change directions. But in the end great athletes will usually succeed at all sports

Well maybe with the exception of baseball LOL sometimes even the greatest athletes can't hit a baseball 🤣🤣

Athletes can literally play about any sport.

You right. I’ve seen some good un’s that could bout do anything. Shatley was a hybrid at EB. Prob coulda been a decent basketball and baseball player too if he wanted to. I mean heck he also did punts.

Also this just in, breaking news- EB boys just won State in Indoor track. Major congrats to these boys. Totally made up for not making it to the football playoffs. I’m sure next year that’ll change if everything lines up the way the Burke posters talk about em and give the inside scoop. This May I’m telling ya come on out you’ll get your moneys worth

Several football players are on the track team That is why we make a big deal out of track at EB on here. we will get there before too long in Football.

That’s the point I make to the rest of our poster friends. It’s all football players putting their tallent and strengths out there and winning. Sure the cross country boys mix in with them and help alittle and maybe 1 or 2 soccer players but it’s predominately football players. If someone wanted to throw wrestling in with this and it be mostly football players showcasing themselves come on and and mention em’

I think on this EB state title indoor track team, ALL that were there and competed except maybe 1 were football players

IMO, any reasonable assessment of CVAC 2023 would have to have Bunker Hill as the clear cut favorite. Lincolnton should also be much improved. IIRC, they lost by only one point to BH last season. If the conference schedule remains the same as last season, the confenence championship could be decided on the first Friday of conference play when Lincolnton plays BH.

If Maiden is to win its 5th conference championship in the past seven years, and fourth in a row, it would take a phenominal coaching job by Will Byrne to pull it off. I'd say we're capable of winning it, but definitely not the favorite to do so. Down through the decades, we've had a few teams that were better than last year's Maiden team, but we've never lost as much talent in one class as we just lost. Big linemen seems to be our strength, but we lost a ton of speed, and speed is usually the name of the game at all levels of football. Our projected starting RB seems to be more of a hard-running, north and south type runner, so I'm wondering if Coach Byrne is going to have to change his approach on offense at least somewhat. Also, the loss of all that speed and experience will probably be felt more on defense than offense. But we're a tradition-rich program, so never count us completely out.

Long time before any rosters are set in stone lol. But if we're looking ahead yeah I think we could possibly have two 6 ft 5 receivers lining up and that's if they don't grow any over the summer. Could be some surprises in the backfield at running back. And let's say Stover does end up being qb1, he's actually a very fast mobile kid. And you may actually be a pretty good quarterback we don't know cuz none of us is actually seen him play the position. And yes we should be very big on the front line and defensive line. Got some kids at linebacker that will lay a SmackDown on you. I'm sure there will be a few surprises for the conference this year. But never underestimate the kings of the valley.

Maiden for sure has kids coming in. Definitely could see a top QB from surrounding county going there. 😉 Any predictions right now are way too early. Of course, we don't have anything else to talk about right now in the off-season but it way too early.

Real topic - when will Catawba county have open transfers? Is school board considering this anytime soon?

Flyrod if u only knew all the rumours or maybe u do 🤣🤣. I really would prefer open enrollment but county probably never allow. For one too many schools will kick and scream. And another big reason is for some reason this county has to have three separate school systems. But I think that's why when you kids end up in Maiden there probably isn't much done about it because why we Catawba County care or placate another school system

DeepBlueDiablo, thanks for the positive comments about Lincolnton. Hope we can live up to it. If Coach Byrne has similar skills to Coach Brown he can mold players into what he needs them to be, at least at the high school level.
Best as I can recall their offensive schemes were very different. I remember driving my uncle to Thomasville so he could watch Maiden play them (Thomasville). I'm not sure but it seems like it was 1991 or 92. That Maiden team reminded me of this year's East Duplin team with a bull of a full back who could carry the ball time after time and take the punishment that comes along with it and still come back for more.
For the sake of just toying with the thought, I wonder how that team would have done against this year's Maiden team and even more so how they would have done against Reidsville.

That was the Tom Brown phase where he had this diverse play calling on first down right up the middle on second down run up the middle on third down run up the middle 🤣🤣. Willys and Tom's offensive philosophies are nowhere similar to each other. Tom would even tell you that he ain't X's and O's coach. Tom Brown was a motivator he would tear you down to nothing and rebuild you into a football machine that if he told you to run through a brick wall you would believe you could do it and you would do it. When I play for Tom there was never a Friday night that we went on to the field thinking we were going to lose

Maiden ended Thomasville’s season in 1992 (13-1 record) and 1993 (8-6 record) followed by losing to Lincolnton (13-2 record). That was followed by one of Thomasville’s very best teams in 1995, the 16-0 state champs. Some great games wIth some great competitors.

AMD, I know he was a motivator. I've watched him scold players on the sidelines during games and even during pre-game warmups. I've seen that style of coach. I got no doubt that he expected you to be physically and mentally tough and to hate the thought of losing.

OC, I'd heard that Thomasville's Coach Brown and Maiden's Coach Brown knew and admired each other, and I don't recall the Bulldogs playing anything else but power football under him. You knew him well and I would guess their style of conditioning and motivation were similar.

I was probably 8 years old at that time. But I'm pretty sure those were the Antoine ikard years at RB

That’s correct AMD. Believe it was A. Ikard.
It was Antoine Ikard. The Thomasville game (Maiden won 21-0) in '92 was the game he took over the all-time NC rushing yardage lead. Not sure where he ranks today, but I'm fairly certain he's still in the Top 15 or so. He took the yardage lead on a long TD run (maybe 50 yards or so) early in the fourth quarter that gave us a 14-0 lead, and pretty much sealed the win. On that play we came out in an unbalanced line and caught T-ville by surprise. It looked like a basic iso play where he started up the middle, then veered quickly to the right (Maiden's) sideline. I remember Thomasville's #40 chasing him down the sideline. I'm not completely sure, but I believe Thomasville's #40 that season was a sophomore LB named Kerry Mock. Mock would later bulk up, and played in the d-line at UNC for Mack Brown.

They were good friends. There were years when the teams would share a pregame meal in the playoff. Allen was tough, but fair. He learned his coaching style while playing for Cushwa, a former Marine drill sergeant. Conditioning was mandatory.

I’m guessing 1991. Antoine and a kid (Westmoreland) from Iredell were battling for the all time rushing title in 1992. Lincolnton went deep in 1992 losing a very close game to East Rutherford. ER was massive and tried to take the air out the ball. In 1991 the wolves had too many offensive miscues and lost to AL Brown in the first round but I think they played them closer than anybody that year. The Wonders made it to state not sure if they won.

With basketball you can tell with hand-eye coordination and if they can handle the basketball overall just means they have some coordination. And you can see quickness in basketball from sudden moves. But yes he looks a lot like Harrison from Reidsville. He's a freshman 6'4 or 6'5 I'd say probably around 220 pounds. But being a freshman he's got room to grow and improve. His little brother could be a possible star also boy got size too
Danged Tennessee Pipeline is open

LHSfaninVA, after Lincolnton lost to East Rutherford in the 92 quarterfinals, ER would lose out to Statesville the next week in the regionals. Statesville would ultimately lose to Burlington Cummings in the 3A title game.
The next year the Wolves dropped down to 2A, but so did Cummings. We would run into them in the championship game on a bitterly cold and blustery night in Chapel Hill, and I know you know the rest of that story and all this other stuff I put in this post, too. I just wanted to write it.

*Oh, by the way, you're right, A.L. Brown played for the 3A title in 1991 against High Point Andrew and lost out 24-14.

I thought East Rutherford played Shelby in the Western Finals. ER had the biggest collection of running backs I had ever seen. They must have had three or four Antoine Ikard types. One or two of them I think were selected for the Shrine Bowl. Lincolnton kept knocking them out of the Black Friday game and one by one they kept returning like a zombie movie.

LHSfaninVA, correction on that. I just found one of the state championship programs. In 1992 East Rutherford lost out to North Rowan, who would lose to Burlington Cummings for the championship. Cummings beat Statesville in the title game in 1990.

Thanks for the update. I do remember Statesville playing Cummings in a game. ER and the Wolves were evenly matched up. I think Lincolnton just missed recovering an onside kick and Arias barely missed a 40-50 field goal. He could sure kick. Now just got to get the current kids to believe that they can play with the big boys (no matter how many IMG recruits amaidendevil brings in) just like the old Lincolnton teams did.

I haven't even mentioned the Florida and Texas recruits that are coming this summer 🤣🤣

Those Mack Brown 1.0 defenses towards the end of this time at UNC were no joke. I was at a game against Wake. I think it was Wake. Deacs had 1st and Goal inside the one and did not score. Stuffed four straight times. Today, they would hold a rugby scrum with three or four backs pushing the quarterback.

Mock was one of the best linebackers in Thomasville history. After UNC, he had a flirting relationship with the NFL, but eventually was assigned to the NFL’s attempt to spread to Europe and played in Scotland. He had great speed for the position and was a solid tackler. Reminded me a lot of Akeem Davis-Gaither, now with the Bengals.

Maybe they were beefing up the servers to handle the world breaking news that may come soon on the maiden football front 🤣🤣
