Hoggard @ 71st

Hoggard travels to Fayetteville to take on a very good Falcon team. Both teams are coming off 1 loss seasons a year ago and both won in week one. The Falcons are lead by the all conference RB (Underwood). The Vikings are lead by their defense. The winner of this battle will probably win the game. Underwood rushed for 250 plus last week against Northern. The Vikings held HS to under 150 yards and only allowed a FG after an int deep in Hoggard territory. Should be a great game. I would give the edge to 71st. Hoggard is 19-1 in non conf regular season games since the 2011 season. There only loss was to WF.

A look at the Happenings in the Eastern 1A after 2 weeks!

Remember back at the turn of the new Millineum when the state subdivided the class 1A playoffs, and awarded 2-1A titles for 1A & 1AA, beginning in 2001?.....Those first 10 years, the West claimed 9 of the first 10 1AA titles with Albemarle(5) and Thomasville(4) winning multiple titles during those years with James Kenan's 13-6 victory over West Montgomery in 2007 as the lone Eastern 1AA title during that span....As for the 1A titles, the West claimed 7 of the first 10 with Elkin(4),Swain County(2) and Mount Airy(1), claiming titles during that span....The remaining 3 titles claimed by the East, belonged to Wallace Rose-Hill(2) and Plymouth(1).....If you fast forward to today, and take a look at what's happened in just the past 5 years, a reasonable person might say that the script has flipped somewhat, especially in the 1AA title chase as the East has won 3 of the last 4, including the last 3, and 3 different teams accomplished that feat(SW Onslow-Now 2A, James Kenan and Wallace Rose-Hill)....And once again this year, the East is considered to be where the top-tier 1AA teams are locacted with a veteran championship calibre team at Wallace Rose-Hill that is poised to repeat as champ....The 1A East has not been as successful as late as Smoky Mountain heavyweights Murphy(2) and Robbinsville have claimed 3 of the last 4 state titles.... 2 of those 3 Western 1A titles have came against Plymouth with the other against Jones Senior...Plymouth who has played in the last 3 1A title games, winning the 2012 title over Murphy(20-15), are hardly finished as the Vikings are the prohibitive favorite in the East to return to the title game for a 4th consecutive season....

Let's take a look at what's happening in the 7 conferences that make up the 1A East:

The Coastal-10 has only 9 members who play football as Ocracoke is too small...Nonetheless, Plymouth has developed into somewhat of an Eastern 1A dynasty, and appear ready to contend for not just another conference title but also a chance at another state title as the Vikings have 2 state 1A titles(07' & 12") and 2 state runnerup finishes(13' & 14') in just last 8 years....This year's chase for the conference title in the C-10 appears to be a 3-team race between Plymouth(1-1), Camden County(2-0) and Manteo(1-0)....The Vikings tasted defeat in the opener at the hands of Eastern 2A Powerhouse ranked Northeastern(40-7) in the home opener before bouncing-back last week with a hard fought win(34-27) over a much-improved Riverside-Martin team....Meanwhile, Camden County which returns 15 starters and 24 letterman from last year's 9-4 team that lost to Princeton in the 2nd round of the 1AA playoffs last year, has beaten 2A teams Pasquotank(61-23) and Currituck(26-19) on the road to open the season, but will get NO break in their home opener this week as the Bruins entertain the unbeaten 2A Eagles from Northeastern...The Manteo Redskins opened the season with a 23-14 victory over 2A Currituck in the home opener, and were off this week in preparation for their short trip across the bridge to Kitty Hawk to face 2A First Flight(1-1) this friday....Later this season, Manteo will have to travel to both Camden County and Plymouth, which makes for a difficult road to the C-10 title for the Redskins...As for the game of the year, it'll come pretty soon when Plymouth travels to Camden County on September 18th, but stay tuned!

The Carolina Conference currently has 3 unbeaten teams in Lakewood(2-0), James Kenan(1-0) and surprising Spring Creek(2-0) as the Gators have won their first 2 games of the season for the first time since the school opened shortly after the new Millineum....Meanwhile, James Kenan had last week off after dismantling 3A Southern Wayne(56-6) in the home opener...This week's home game will be much much more difficult for the Tigers as the defending state 1AA champs from WRH come to town after ending James Kenan's season(34-31) in the Eastern 1AA Finals, last year...Meanwhile, Lakewood has recorded 2 shutouts to open the season over Union and East Columbus, ad will be heavily favored at home this week against the winless devilpups of Lejeune...The Leopards first road game at 2A Midway(2-0) in a couple weeks will be thei first test of the new season for the Leopards....

One of the most improved conferences in the state is the Two Rivers Conference....Tarboro which was a fixture in the 2A title game prior to being realigned into the 1A class, is poised to have their most competitive 1A team, this year....The Vikings are the obvious preseason favorite in the TRC, having already claimed the first 2 outright titles since joining the conference....Thus far this season, Tarboro(2-0) has already claimed road wins at 3A Nash Central(40-12) and at powerhouse 2A Washington(32-7), last friday....Another TRC unbeaten is South Creek(2-0) who beat Southeast Halifax on the road for the 2nd time in less than a year, winning this year by 10 more points(34-23) than they did in the playoffs last year(20-19)...Both North Edgecombe and Riverside-Martin opened the season with victories before losing to Eastern powers 2A SW Edgecombe and Plymouth, respectabily....

The Tar-Roanoke Conference has a state marquee player in All-State Preseason QB Jay Parker from Granville Central who passed for over 3200yds and 33TDs last season, but the TRC doesn't seem to have a marquee team?....The Panthers are once again expected to contend for the TRC title with SE Halifax, and will host the Trojans on October 16th....Overall, the conference does not have any unbeaten or ranked teams as Granville Central lost a shootout(46-36) in the home opener last friday to the 4A Person Rockets....Louisburg(0-2) could be in for a long season, unless they can recover from lopsided home losses to 2A North Johnston(63-20) an Franklinton(56-7) to open the season....

Last year, it was Southside and Pamlico and everybody else in the Coastal Plains Conference, but early indications are that the CPC as a whole may be quite a bit more competitive this year than it was last year? There are currently 3 unbeaten teams in the CPC with Southside(2-0), Northside-Pinetown(2-0) and East Carteret(2-0) all beginning the season on a good note....At least one of those 3 teams will have a loss after this coming friday as Southside travels to Northside-PT for a non-conference tilt with the Panthers....East Carteret will try to stay unblemished against another surprising unbeaten team as Spring Creek from the Carolina Conference makes the trip to Beaufort this friday...The Mariners will likely get a better gage of their team on September 18th when James Kenan comes to town?

There are 2 split-class Conferences in the East, and the 1A teams from those 2 conferences, are expected to contend for titles in those respective conferences....

Wallace Rose-Hill in particular is favored to defend their 2014 1AA title, and who's too argue---The Bulldogs(2-0) sit atop of every statewide 1A poll, and have hammered thier first 2 opponents 4A Laney(42-14) ,and shutout 2A East Duplin(45-0) to open the season...No 1A team in the Four Rivers Conference is likely to challenge the talented Bulldogs, but a couple of 2A teams Clinton and East Bladen likely will, especially Clinton(1-0) who finished as the state 2A Runnerup to Shelby, last season...The season-ending showdown between 2A Clinton and WRH in Clinton, will likely determine the 15' FCC champ as it has the last couple of seasons....Heide Trask(1-1), Union(0-1) and Pender County(0-1) will be hard-pressed to stay competitive with WRH or the 2A teams in this conference, but head-to-head games between those 3 teams should be closely contested?

As for the Three Rivers Conference, Whiteville(0-2) in spite of their slow start is still the clear favorite to win the conference, and the Wolfpack are head and shoulders above their fellow TRC 1A brethen East Columbus(0-2),South Robeson(0-2) and West Columbus(0-2) all of which are winless on the season...The 1A Wolfpack will try to pick up thier first win of the season in Bladenboro this friday when they face unbeaten 2A West Bladen(2-0)...2A Red Springs is currently the only unbeaten team in the TRC...

That's what I know thus far about these 7 Eastern 1A Conferences....Maybe some of our knowledgeable Eastern folk would like to tell us more?

Comments and Opinions as always are welcomed!

East Wilkes 46 - Surry Central 13

Surry Central started the game off by fumbling the kick off inside their own 10 yard line. East converted a 4th and goal from the 2 to take a 7 - 0 lead. The next position East's D forced a punt. The snap was a bad one and the punter went to one knee to gather the ball. That allowed East great field position and East went up 14 - 0. It is great to see that East can kick a field goal this year.

Surry Central put together a good drive to bring the score to 14 - 6, then the rest of the half belonged to East. East led 26 - 6 at halftime after a great touchdown drive with around 1 minute to play in the 1st half. 2 minute drill ran to perfection.

In the 2nd half East took the opening drive down the field and went up 33 - 6. Surry Central responded with a long drive only to fumble the ball around the 10 yard line on a great hit. East put another couple of drives together to go up 46 - 6, before Surry Central put together a midway through the 4th quarter drive to provide the final score of 46 - 13.

Surry Central does have some good athletes, but right now they just make too many mistakes. I really enjoyed the halftime ceremony when SC recognized their state championship team from 1965.

East has looked really good the first two weeks, although some will say it is because of who they have played in South Stokes and SC. We will know more as the season goes on. The biggest thing tonight was they cut the turnovers down and both games they have been able to stay away from the penalty bug.

East has enough guy's to keep everyone fresh and it is showing on the field. They also have more speed than a normal Cardinal team. Looks like it is going to be a fun year. Take this week off and continue to improve.

Albemarle youth scrimmage observation

I went up today to the high school to check out the youth league. I was surprised of how many people came! I believe all of West Stanly was there. They traveled very well.

The teams that participated were: Albemarle, Anson, Peidmont, West Montgomery, North Stanly, and South Stanly.

NS vs WS
WM vs WS
SS vs WM (not sure on this)
ALB(division 1) vs Peidmont
ALB(division 2) vs Anson

By far, West Montgomery was the best in division 1 & 2. They have a QB in division 2 that can sling it!

North Stanly didn't look to shabby and neither did West Stanly. North and West clearly has the numbers in Stanly County. They probably had 30 each at least for each division.

Albemarle division 1 was impressive. They are running the "Double Wing" to my surprise....and they were running it better than the Varsity lol! It was nice to see what the double wing can do if executed right. All Albemarle faithful remembers Tory Rushing, well his son is on the division 1 team and man! that kid runs with excellent vision and authority! That was a breath of fresh air seeing Albemarle run it like that. They took it too Peidmont.

Division 2 on the other hand is a ?. They are still running the old offense and low in numbers. I counted maybe 14-15. But they have nice size. One kid is 6ft and he's a fifth grader. They were decent against Anson. Still very talented.

We need to get our numbers up, that's the most important thing right now.

I didn't watch the 7 on 7, but I heard Albemarle had two speedster that no one could catch.

All in All, each team has a bright future....as long as the players keep a straight head and parents continue to be involved.

Well the Cheerleaders showed up in Maroon!

Is a Name change coming next?
From the audible GASP from the Home crowd when the former maroon Devils entered the field wearing GRAY uniform’s…. To the unbelievable offensive play calling. To the total shock of a large crowd in awe the whole dang game of the Gray Ghosts of the Maroon Devils that played tonight. Unbelievable is an understatement…

First, take this team out of any top ten or twenty ranking in football in this state. Played as well as that nasty looking jersey on their backs tonight.

Second, enough of out smarting ourselves in coaching. Running the power game for 4 to 6 yards a clip to strong side only to change it up and move the ball for 1 to 2 yards running to weak side are some things that make you go DOH. I know if faked me out, couldn’t grasp it at the time and still don’t. But it sure kills some good drives.

Third, great punter! Thank goodness I’ve found a bright spot for this team in gray. GRAY!!!! GRRRRRRRAAAAAAAYYYY BS!

Forth, if you have a field goal kicker with issues kicking an extra point, why attempt a 35 yard FG with him? Oh, least of all why on 3rd down a 6 or7 would we attempt a ONE YARD PASS PLAY? These are the questions running through my mind! Look above and the power running statement…. Naw just kick a 38 yard FG. LMAO!

No heart, no win and sadly with those butt ugly uniforms Swain won’t have that many fans left to continue this onslaught. Even at the end when some brave souls were singing the school song, “with Colors of Maroon and White” no…. not tonight…. I don’t even know where to start on this new uniform. I don’t care if the money was donated to the cause of new uni’s or if Tax dollars were used. GET RID OF THOSE UGLY THINGS.
Swain wears Maroon and White. But if this is the case that we now wear Gray then I can only speak for myself in saying good bye to the gray ghosts of the Devils past. Lifted that line from a good friend setting next to me tonight and he was just as pissed off as I was. And that’s not even at the level of play of the game just those uniforms were enough to kill any spirit the crowd had at the start of the game and continued to the bitter end.
Still in shock,
KevinFromSwain

High Point Central vs Northeast

I have pretty much always been an underdog fan . I can't wait to see how the young bison play this Thursday night against Northeast this may be what this young team needs to get going. If they can eliminate all the penalties this will be a scary team. The young qb went 16 for 20 for 220 yards a td very impressive for first start on Varsity and don't forget the two headed monsters of Little and Wall can't wait to see them play .

Kings Mountain over East Gaston in a defensive battle

61-42. Biggest difference was our inability to prevent big plays by Kings Mtn on kickoffs returns and through the air. Kings Mtn is very good, but we are pretty fair too. It was definitely a heavy weight battle. 28, 15, 10, 12 had big games for Kings Mtn on offense. Tyler Spurling (EG RB) probably had close to 200 yards rushing and Tom Adams (EG QB) probably had close to 250+ yards passing.

Three Rivers Conference predictions

This is the worst time of your for sports with very little going on ... So lets get the conversation going

My picks for the Three Rivers

1. Whiteville (Very strong showing last year and deep run in the playoffs ... Lost some key players, but QB is back. "To be the man ... You must beat the man")
2. South Columbus (The stud of the conference for many years, but took a hit last year. Should bounce back with Fonvielle helping the entire season)
3. Fairmont (Mark Heil is a good coach at a school that traditionally has good athletes - I like the mix)
4. Red Springs (Seems to have a decent pool of athletes for a 1A school .... Always surprise a team or two every year. Has rival St. Pauls' number over the past several years)
5. St. Pauls (Solid over the past couple of seasons, but a small O line and a mass exodus of good coaches over the past couple years spells trouble)
6. South Robeson (Jernigan in his 2nd year should see improvement)
7. West Columbus (I felt like they were making some ground last year ... West and South Rob are interchangeable)
8. East Columbus (Bless Rocky Lewis' heart ... Very tough situation)
