Mack is Back Part 2

What’s going on with Justin Olson? Loved that kid in High School. Hough had 5 FBS DB’s in the secondary his senior year. He lit them up like Xmas. I thought he would get on the field early.
They have given him snaps, just hasn't done anything with it. Played the first game, caught a ball and the defender took it out of his hands for an INT.

He shouldn't touch the field. Overrated as they come. Many other options on the wr depth chart then the slow white boy Olson

Have you ever attended a high school football game and a college game on the same day? It is amazing the difference in talent, size, skill level and strength. There are those few rare birds that go to college and start their freshman season. Most don’t. Sometimes the ones that do are starting because of injuries to upperclassmen. And a very few are just that talented. I attended homecoming at Gardner-Webb a few years back, followed by a rain delayed South Point game. South Point is small granted. Gardner-Webb is of course is no Alabama. The difference was remarkable.

Spot on brother, they should have never went to unc. Hopefully they transfer out asap.
If duke could get the dj Jones's of the world who have this vision of being a star at unc they could have a solid squad. Duke offered Jones late and he would be splitting time with Durant because duke is going to kill him. I get the whole unc thing but if you are a 3 star kid and the depth chart is loaded wake and duke are better options if you can get into school. I think for the most part kids that all of those schools recruit in state can get in. I look at the defensive kid from Leesville. I might be wrong but I don't see him playing at unc any time soon. At duke he is playing and maybe starting his sophomore year. I doubt he sees the field at unc until he is a junior. Again unc problem is more about preparation than talent. Some of those kids are going to be really good players but something is missing from the squad this year.

Kid from Leesville will get a shot to play early as they're thin at the OLB spot. If you asked me a year/2 ago, when he was 205 pounds, I would say otherwise but he added a ton of weight during the off season, increased his maximum weight on bench presses and squats by 100 pounds each and is about 250 pounds now.

Some of it is preparation, sure. But when you're missing tackles, committing false starts/holding, not beating your man, not getting separation, dropping balls etc as 3rd/4th/5th year players, gotta look at yourself in the mirror.

Yes, some of those kids are going to be really good players.....when/if they see the field.

Have you seen that kid. He is going to play with his hand in the dirt. I know they list the kid from Lee county as an OLB but that kid is a end just standing up. I have seen the kid from Leesville a couple times and while he is tall I'm just not buying it. He may prove me wrong and I hope he does but there is a kid on Gibbons that is going to tear it up next year at end/olb if they let him play both ways. I would take him over the Leesville kid. When I see a kid 6 ft 6 and 240 in hs he should jump off the page when he plays (sorta like the kid at NB - he jumps off the page) . Nothing about this kid does that. I'm sorry. Most of his plays are chase downs where the back side tackle is lazy and refuses to block down. Again I hope he blows up but I see him as just a kid who may see some time down the road.

The transition physically once a HS kid gets into a college strength and nutrition program nets very quick results. Monitored 24/7 and they go from eating pizza and Big Macs to a high quality protein based diet. Its not unusual for a kid to put 20-30 lbs of good weight on pretty quickly. There have been kids who went away for 5-6 months that I barely recognized when they would come back to visit.

The bigger struggle is focus and workload. Most are not ready for that level of commitment and are navigating a huge life transition as well. It takes time but the talent and strength usually arent the issue.

Have you seen Beau this year or last year? He's playing a ton of stand up OLB rushing the passer this year and has looked really good with that added weight and his non-stop motor.

And color me unimpressed again. I expect a kid that size to look like the kid from New bern - unblockable unless he takes a play off. Listen he takes a pretty picture but I have seen hundreds like that and played with them and against them. Again time will tell. You want to see dominant front 7 play pull out some film on JD Lampley from RC. Now that's another kid who jumps off the page!

If devilmac is talking about FBS level defensive play he has a bit of first hand experience so I will take what he says as a good indication of what is.

Not knocking that but we'll see how it plays out as many former players/scouts don't get it right all the time.

Fellows don't get me wrong I see why the kid got a ton of offers but I look at the kid from Lee county and he was supposed to be LT (just kidding) and I don't think this kid is thought of in that category and the from Lee County hasn't set the world on fire. Now what you can't judge is a kids heart and desire and he might have that in spades. I take a kid that you all know tons about and that is big baby Davis. He was dominant when he wanted to be in high school but if I recall he was not some mega 5 star kid and look at him now. He got into a program learn to eat and lift the right way and the dollars signs he could make turned him into a monster. So kids can change but a lot times they are what they are when you see them. Some times these undervalued kids like Hood in terms of the stars turns out to be the studs of the litter.

No one gets it right all the time. It's obvious he has some natural gifts and he has worked his ass off in the weight room but in the words of the late Buddy Ryan - "son you look like Tarzan and play like Jane" hopefully he will not be one of those guys!

We'll see here shortly. I know Power Echols doesn't play like Jane when he absolutely wrecked the returner on the first kick of for UNC. Can't wait to see him in the middle of the D and setting the tone these next few years. Just gotta get these kids on the field to see what they've got.

All LBs should wear a neck roll.

I never looked at him as overrated, but an overrated WR, on a overrated college football team. That sounds about right. :)

I don't think it's that he's overrated as much as it's that he lacks confidence. We expected him to be good because he's shown that he's capable. But for that position, if you look at the really good players, they're almost always a bit cocky. If the ball's in the endzone, it's theirs, and no one is taking it from them. That's what he's lacking right now. And honestly, part of that is on Longo. Guys like Brown and Olsen need to be involved early in the game. Throw them a screen, hit them in the flats - let them get in the flow of the game and build some confidence.

It's missing an OL. Watch the middle of the OL on this play:

They don't handle movement well at all. You simply can't give up the A gap like that lol. And it happens multiple times every game. Teams have figured out they can stop everyone except Howell and Downs and really slow down the offense. That in turn puts a lot more pressure on the defense. Was the opposite last year - the offense helped a lot.

They need to get one more TD and get Howell out of there. He has taken some big hits.
Yea he's been running way too much lately. Not trusting his WR's and ducking out of the pocket if the read isn't there to #11. Before the season, everyone knew he was gone -- really starting to wonder what is best for him after this season. Stock has gone down, but there still isn't much in this class.

Just got home from the Tennessee game. That was crazy. Couldn’t believe the students. When I was walking back to the car to leave students were throwing big rocks at the Ole Miss equipment tractor trailer. I just knew students walking on the other side of it was going to get nailed by one.

There is also the aspect of physical maturity. A 17-18 year physically develops from being a boy to a man those next 3-4 years. This is true regardless of the sport. Few 17-18 year olds are physically ready to compete against men. I was a walk on wrestler in college for 2 years. I was a high school hot shot but I got put on my back more times in a day my first week than I did my entire high school career. Simply the difference between competing against boys and men, which in my case included nationally ranked and a number of multi year collegiate all-americans. Few get to play at the collegiate level. The number of freshmen that see playing time is a rare minority and it is the extremely rare freshman that can significantly contribute right out of high school.
