Crest/Shelby updates

Shelby punting and pinning Crest deep not count? 10 yard punt by Crest before halftime gave Shelby ball on 35 as well.
I agree but we gave up 3 returns. First one on the kickoff to the 10 another one to the 10 and a punt return where there were at least 2 clips, 4 flags thrown and Shelby was tagged with illegal participation.

I was trying to decide between going to Scotland or Shelby. Went west to see some old friends and the BBQ. Worth the two hour drive!!!

Why did you think the intentional grounding was a bad call? I was in a position where I could not see down the sideline but only the QB. The saw the ball hit the wall of the stands.

Foster for Crest is a monster at LBer. Hamstring, should be ok.

Shelby's wideouts got in space and made plays. Thought that would win the game but Shelby's front seven was battling fatigue and the physicality of Crest by the end of the night. QB must make better decisions and be more consistent but they will not face anyone that will threaten them in the 2A playoffs.

Crest would be very hard to stop if they would develop a intermediate passing game. Harbison run or a deep pass was about it. Round three potential matchup is ACR and regional title game most likely Concord. Do not see them losing there nor to the east rep in the title game.

Good luck to both squads and congrats on a great night of football.
He rolled out threw the ball to right sideline where #8 was in vicinity of the pass. Probably was 10 yards away from him.

And you had great coverage on the others pinning Crest back. The game wasn't on special teams. It was on Shelby giving up big play on 3rd and 15 late.

Us having more total yards says different. Crest won, and that's pretty much it. Moving on.

Someone want to explain the 4th down and pass play Crest did...Still don't understand that call...stuff like loses games against good teams.

The few times Crest kicked the ball deep was awesome! Why don't they let him do that more often? I was proud of our freshman kicker...speaking of which, when the Shelby player caught the ball he stepped into the endzone...I thought that was an automatic touchback? I saw it. several people saw it. Ref was standing right there...

I liked the idea to go for it but man the play itself was poorly executed.

Just go through your usual "Crest just beat us" Saturday routine and things will be fine.
He has trouble dealing with things. His year depends on this game. We can never just be a tad better in his mind. The last time I checked Special teams was a part of football. All in all, I think we played the best team we'll see all year. May hats off to those Shelby kids and, our kids. They played as hard as they could all play.

Lee is an awesome QB. I was glad we introduced him to the dirt in the second half. Those short passes to that speed was the truth, but he held on to it looking down field in the second half and we finally got to him.

Awesome game....

Yeah, I thought they would have blown that one dead, but what was so impressive to me was Wright running back there full speed to catch the ball, he covered a lot of ground in doing so, and having the stamina to turn around and return it full speed. He looked like he was shot out of a cannon. There were athletes all over the field last night.

The ball itself must touch the goal line. The return man can be in the end zone when he catches the ball as long as the ball does not cross into the line.

I was standing on the Crest sideline (Shelby first half) and could not see. The only thing I could think of was the ball was thrown literally against into the stands.

The one Shelby TD reception went right through the hands of the Crest player. Great concentration to pull in the catch after that. The Shelby receivers were impressive players.

He cought it in bounce then stepped in endzone....thats legal

Nah, no bounce, I was on that end of the stadium. You could literally hear some Crest fans laughing, because the kicker fooled our players by kicking it deep, they assumed the kick would be unreturnable. Wright sprinted back there and caught that ball before it even hit the ground, a remarkable show of athleticism.

One thing I can say is streaming didn't hurt this game at all. I wish ALL the playoffs could be streamed.

If someone hears an official attendence I would like to know. That parking took 38 minutes from the time I was in front of the school.

If, could have been, etc... One thing that puzzled me was all the plays that Shelby QBs had to simply run for a first down and much more but never would made the attempt. I can only remember two runs by either QB. Instead they elected to throw the bomb and go big.

Not to throw any fuel on the fire but I'm not sure that ball made it passed the LOS before going out of bounds there for the call was right.

Besides that would have been no worse call then the shelby punt that was only touched at the 2 and allowed to roll thru the end zone and then given to shelby on the 2 and not a touch back?

I've never seen two opposite fan bases agree on officials calls. It just is what it is. Rulz is right special teams are a part of the game. And we failed miserbly on returns.

More accurate directional wise. Davis is a better punter this way. Crest did it a lot back when Trevor Austin was the kicker. Didn't use it with Trejo.

Davis can punt normally, too, but he's very good at the directional. Remember, Davis had a broken wrist in late August and has spent most of season in cast/brace. Not been able to practice catching punts much at all, which is why coaches are using him this way.

Former Shelby admin told me over 5,500 tickets were pre-sold as of Thursday night. I think about 9,000 was the total crowd to include tickets sold, season ticket holders, and passes. I expect some people may have turned around due to the parking. I was there before 5:30 and it was already packed.

At close of school Friday Scotland had sold 6,500 and Richmond 2,520 plus the 1,100 Scotland season ticket holders. That is much more than than the stadium can hold there.

The NCHSAA gets a breakdown of the tickets sold for each playoff game. Have never seen a published attendance though

I had forgotten about the wrist too. Another great point. Love watching him kick and it's only gonna get better.

Enjoyed the ground and pound UFC blows from the Crest defensive player on the Shelby guy. Result was 30 yards in penalties. Gives new meaning to physical game. Don't know what the Shelby guy did to set that off.

Had to be something bad never seen 35 loose his cool like that.

Dont really matter now, but i was sitting in front of that play,35 threw a punch, i thought that was ejection of game...

Watching it on TV, the ref made the ejection signal, but nobody ever left the game. Doesn't matter, but it was odd.

Shelby vs Crest that game was all what High School football is about. Great atmosphere, packed house and both teams left it all out on the field. I was sitting on the Shelby side and their was a guy that sounded like Method Man just going crazy and bashing Shelby every time Crest made a play. i have no dog in the fight, but it was bothering some of the people around.

Great game - hate someone had to lose. Congrats to the Chargers and hope both teams go back to the state title games and win for the county.

The post below is not meant to be sour grapes - but to point out big momentum swings in the game.

Big momentum swings included Crest going from 3rd and 10 on their own 43 after Shelby sack...to 1st and 10 at the Shelby 42 due to an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty on Shelby for celebrating. There didn't appear to be much of a celebration aside from the player walking about 10 extra yards into Crest's end of the field by himself after the sack. - Crest scores a TD on the very next play (Harbison 42-yard TD run).

I'm okay with the UC call, but in the 2nd half a Crest player tackled Shelby for a 2-yard loss and then stood over the Shelby player and took a fake baseball homerun swing...with no penalty called. The Shelby coaches were beside themselves...don't know how the officials can call one and not the other...seemed they missed the call against Crest. These were the only 2 calls that I really think were mishandled by the officials.

Another was the long kickoff return by Crest down to the Shelby 33...at least 4 penalty flags were thrown at different times during the return...Shelby got flagged for illegal participation on the play...Crest was given the spot of the return, plus another 15 yards on the penalty, down to the Shelby 18 - Crest ended up not scoring after a goal line stand by Shelby. However, it changed field position, and then Crest made a great INT at the Shelby 11 yard line and Crest scored on the next play.

Shelby also got some momentum after the short punt by Crest right before half time and capitalized on the 35-yard TD pass that went right through a Crest DB's arms...

Shelby also had momentum after the 91-yard TD drive to take the lead. Shelby had a QB scramble on 3rd and 15 and threw a 16-yard TD on 3rd and 15 on the drive.

Another Shelby drive was aided by 30 yard in Crest penalties after a personal foul and unsportsmanlike conduct penalties back-to-back.

Obvious to me, though, was the huge play by Crest on the winning TD drive - converting a 3rd and 14 on a huge sliding catch by #3, which took the wind of Shelby's sails as Crest then completed a 30-yard pass on the next play and scored to retake the lead on the next play. The catch on 3rd and 14 was the play of the game!

To me, the difference in the game was the Special Teams play - Crest ended up with a KO return to Shelby's 10, another to Shelby's 18, and a punt return for TD. Crest also had the INT deep in Shelby's territory. During the first runback to the Shelby 10, the officials waived off a sideline interference call on Crest...hard to tell why the flag was thrown to begin with.

Both teams have to limit the penalties going forward. Shelby had well over 100 yards of penalties and Crest had over 90 yards in penalties. Several 15-yard penalties both ways, which will happen in a big, emotional game like Friday night.

Sounds like the guy above me at the 25 yard line standing at the top. Sound like this "I tolles you. Oh ya Ize tolles you. Sheby aint stoppin my boyze." Tried to agitate the whole Shelby section.

Yeah, we could not believe this either. It actually happened twice. Two Crest players also did a hip check after a big tackle for a loss with no penalty. Couldn't understand why we got flagged and they didn't.

Supposedly, once a helmet comes off that player must stop playing immediately. Since #27 didn't stop playing for us, they flagged him. In other words, don't go all out....be a wuss if your helmet comes off.

We put NO pressure on Willie on that 3rd and 14. Our front 4 actually stood up and slowed as if expecting to make a move on a draw or something. He sat back there forever and waited for that guy downfield to get open. Any amount of pressure could have disrupted that play....and...probably game over. We would have gotten the ball back with the possibility of driving down and going up by 8 with not much time left. That was definitely the play of the game.

Why in the HELL did we do those stupid little kickoffs to the middle? That killed us. Crest had short fields pretty much all night. We would have been better off to just kick the ball out of bounds and give it to them on the 35. In our opinion that is really what lost the game for us....only because it gave Crest so many short fields.

Truck was great as the backup qb. In all honesty, we should have left him in on the 3rd down play. Lee was immobile and couldn't move and was sacked. Truck's pass to the endzone was inches from being a td and he hit Camp over the middle for a first down but Crest made a great play to jar the ball loose. He could have ran on either of those plays for a first down if he wanted. He has excellent field presence and poise.

With all that said....What. A. Game. Man....I'd love to replay that even with the same outcome just because it was so entertaining. You can't get anymore entertainment for $7 than that game. If we played 10 times, Shelby would win 5 and Crest would win 5. Wishing Crest the best of luck in the playoffs.

(btango...you should have come met us?)

A former Qb's dad and he has another playing receiver....He is horrible... Has been escorted out a couple times.... He was screaming the entire game up at East Rutherford, and it confirmed to me just why I decide to stay home most Fridays and watch... (If this is the same man you are talking about) Deep scratchy voice?

Sounded like he was going hoarse, but the guy was non-stop. He sounded like Method Man, yes deep scratchy voice.

'98 it was almost overwhelming trying to do anything at the game it was so packed in. Even the sidelines were loaded down. I did meet up with some friends from both programs. One of the refs was an All American lineman at Gardner Webb. He looked like he could still suit it up in his 50's as could one of the other ones that moved down the field at a rapid pace.

Regarding the helmet. When a helmet comes off the player is to discontinue playing and unless it was removed by a foul he is to miss the following play. If he continues the play it is an illegal participation call. Everything is safety driven now. Remember a Crest players helmet came off when they had the ball. Lance flipped out when the player came back in but a play had not been ran as there was a penalty that stopped play. He returned to the sideline for his one play. He also flipped out on his former players on the sideline when they were giving the ref the business.

So btango, you had to choose between the Scotland and Shelby games, and Shelby won your self-aggrandizing presence (look it up). We call bull on that - there was no choice.

Crest vs. Shelby. Both reigning and dominating State Champions. Both undefeated. The current best 3A program in the state vs the unmatched TRUE DYNASTY IN NC FOOTBALL. Two teams with 12 STATE TITLES and 18 Championship game appearances between them in THE LAST 25 YEARS.

Richmond Co vs Scotland? RC, a has been, and Scotland best known for beating that has been the last 5 years now. 2 titles BETWEEN THEM THIS CENTURY.

You had to attend to perpetuate your myth as a NC high school football expert. And you could not resist making your presence known thru a Rivals post here. Once again you hid from us knowing we continually expose you as a fraud. Upon what authority do you comment?

"Shelby's front seven was battling fatigue and the physicality of Crest by the end of the night." Really? So who stuffed the run twice to set up the 3rd and 14 game saving pass for Crest? That comment coming from you is classic, as in all your previous attempts to diminish Shelby's level of play, real or imagined, against larger schools or broader competition. Nice try, again. We had several knowledgeable broad based spectators around us Friday night that commented both Crest and Shelby would compete well with anyone, even the best in 4A. Do you disagree, btango? Shelby has already defeated several of the top 3A teams this year. And Crest is #1.

For the Shelby Golden Lions however, the REAL STORY GOES BACK TO SUSTAINED SUCCESS of the program. Go back and read our home page. www.shelbyhighfootball.com. We have operated at this high level continuously for the last 6 DECADES. While we respect all teams in the small 2A bracket, we are disappointed that the sub classifications prevent the Golden Lions from some potential match ups with other strong programs in 2A. But consider this...#1 Crest has 1288 students. Shelby has only 840. The fact that the Golden Lions consistently perform at the highest level with such a small student body is remarkable. It is also a tribute to the players, coaches, parents, faculty and admin, and the Shelby community.

Hey numb nuts, Crest beat Shelby and the "true dynasty" took it in the shorts once again!! Can we move on? Of course the "true dynasty" will win another ship, the local politicians/good ole boys fashion it that way.
