Catawba Valley 2A Early Outlook

The new kids for Maiden are still not in Maiden yet. They are finishing up at current school. A couple more weeks until roster is set with them. 🤣🤣🤣

Serious question, is spring football practices good?
I hear the limo and helicopter was on the way back as we speak!

Spring practice is OK I mean I wish we did a spring game and U can’t really tell or go by anything in spring ball to say they are good or not so

Ready for football EB kids are having a big time in the weight room getting ready and faster! I feel like this will be our best team in a while!!

I can say we probably will average @ 300 pounds across the whole line. We could line up over 300 pound lineman at every position across the line. I've seen an 8th grader at the middle school deadlifting over 400 pounds and squatting over 400 pounds and pressing 255 looking easy. And another 8th grader coming in at 6'3 230 pounds

And on another note. Looks like bunker Hill's scheduled to hickory Hawks for a non-conference game, come on really now really guys. I'm hoping for the biggest upset ever. Let's go Cinderella

I mean We may not like it but I’m sure hickory hawks have a hard time getting teams schedule so I mean I’m sure just help them out but it doesn’t benefit BH at all just a W on the schedule

If I'm wrong, please correct me. I fear staying wrong more than being wrong temporarily. I know my stats for Tom Brown are 2 wins less and two losses more than Chris Hobbs' records...but I would have to have access to his files to see where.

I also know I don't have any data for pre 1960...thus missing data for Bill Barefoot, and our first head coach Mr. McGraw.
I show Tom Brown's record as 330-98-6. 113-30-5 (1966-1978) + 217-68-1 (1986-2007). I believe his statue at the stadium shows 330 wins, but I don't remember for sure. The 330 wins at the time were the most wins at one school in the history of NC high school football. He had more wins (22 ?) at Bunker Hill during his short time there.

The SD-7 2A conference began in 1959. Maiden was 7-3 that season under Bill Barefoot. I show Maiden's record since (and including 1959) as 564-190-10. In 64 years Maiden has won or shared 28 conference championships, won 2 state championships (1971, 1978) and one western state championship (1992).

The year prior to the forming of the SD-7 2A conference (1958), Maiden had one of its worst seasons in school history. They finished 2-6-2. Bill Barefoot did not coach in 1961 or 1962. I believe he left to try his hand at selling insurance. I might be wrong, but I show coach Allen LaTorre being HC in only one of those two seasons, going 8-1-1 in 1962. He left coaching and worked for many years at MDI in Hickory. Maiden went 7-2-1 in 1961. I believe the HC in 1961 may have been Jim Holly, but, again, not 100% sure. Bill Barefoot did return '63-'65. Maiden played Sylva-Webster for the "state championship" in 1965 and lost 26-13. In those days the 2A classification had four "state" champions (East, Mid East, Mid West, and West). Each winner was considered a state champion because you were only allowed to play two playoff games, and in doing so you had gone as far as you could go.

Bunker Hill isn't the only one. There is another poster on here talking trash last year and his team. Community School of Davidson scheduled the hickory Hawks for non conference also. People want to say they can't control their conference schedule but teams definitely can control their non-conference schedule

I would even give you a slide on it... if it was a regular team that just happened to be in your county and it made sense logistically to play them.. but a private Christian League school of homeschooled kids.. can't let you slide on that one

It’s Maiden. Some years better than others but by the sound of it they will be just fine. Maybe 1 or 2 or 3 less wins next year then back on track year after that.

With EB there’s a good year here then drought then maybe decent year then drought. I hope that’s not the case and they get more consistent. They will have enough speed to get by this year then after that, ehhh. A scrambling QB that will be a track star is coming up. If he trains and has discipline and has an Oline it may get interesting- spring and fall. I’ve not known or ever heard of an 8th grader at EBMS run that fast.

This will be EB year to finish High in the standing. Coach Minor has done a great job and even after this yr I’m sure even if only win 2-4 game a year I think they stay competitive and stay a tough physical team. Consistency is key

This year will be their last chance to finish high for a while. They’ll have a good player here and there but this class as a whole packs a punch and will be missed GREATLY after the final whistle of whatever game they end with for the year, playoff or reg season. However they will have a few jrs this year who will be valuable and a really good freshman that MIGHT do varsity if Minor feels he’s ready and shows something in practice and scrimmages, and May can help team get .500 at least when they are seniors if enough tallent is around them

I just hope this ain’t same type situation I saw YEARS ago. A kid at Heritage that ran a very fast 100M time with reg tennis shoes and no starting blocks who we assumed was gonna be or
Could be the next big thing and be a track star/RB sensation on the field only to not really do any sports cause he was lazy and liked to chase women. This was the old EB of course when Draughn wasn’t a thought yet.

Saw where Avery has Watauga week 2.

Heard Maiden has a bye… week 2…ain’t sure it’s true.

That’s interesting!….gotta look at some schedules to see who I want to see play week 2.

Loving South Caldwell’s schedule…not playing a team twice.

Hoping Watauga, Hibriten and Ashe figure it out!

Heard same thing on week 2 bye. Not happy with that means we gotta stay healthy all year not recuperating during the season

Our opponents were set, same as last year, but the Saint game got moved from week 2 to week 4 bc of something screwy on Saints end.
It actually looks like the BYE week got moved from 4 to 2 and Watauga game went from week 2 to 3 and Saint from week 3 to week 4.

Not sure why...Watauga week 2 this year is Avery Co...so maybe something to do with them?

Interested in hearing about Newton Conover this year. West Henderson has a random week 1 road trip to Newton kick off the season.
Nobody really knows who's staying on the team and who's leaving over the summer. They will have athletes and talent but coach probably won't be able to put it together or utilize it.

yes, before Coach Minor got here the teams were weak now no pushover games even going in to the tough conference they are in now. spring workout when great and Great numbers so far!!

Sometimes red flames can burn hot but then they yearn to reach the heat and brightness of a blue flame. And they go for that goal. 🤔😂😂

Just finished compiling Maiden's football history from 1960 to present:

I don't know when our first season was...but I know of one game in 1956 at least, and know that Bill Barefoot coached in 1956, 57, 58, 59, 60 and 63, 64, 65 - but I only have complete records from 1960 and on...

556-188-9 (74.4%) overall school record since 1960 (63 seasons)

1. Allen LaTorre - 17-2-1 (87.5%) in 2 seasons
2. Bill Barefoot - 34-8-1 (80.2%) in 4 seasons (missing data prior to 1960)
3. Will Byrne - 67-17-0 (79.8%) in 7 seasons (Current Head Coach)
4. Tom Brown - 328-99-6 (76.4%) in 35 seasons
5. Frank Snider - 33-17-0 (66.0%) in 4 seasons
6. Kermit Whisnant - 47-25-1 (65.1%) in 7 seasons
7. Brian Brown - 30-20-0 (60.0%) in 4 seasons

This next season will make Coach Byrne the 2nd longest tenured coach in Maiden's history.
Maiden considers the 1953 season as their first year of official football with the opening of the old Maiden High School. Maiden actually fielded teams as early as 1925 when they were known as the Harvesters. They had teams off and on until the old school opened. I can get you some information on your Blue Devils from 1953-59 if you'd like it.

Bring back Harvester High!

Sorry Maiden fans, the mascot was the Huskies and not the Harvesters. I got confused with another team.
