NW Top 10

I figures this would be interesting and bring some more conversation to our area. Feel free to post your own. By the NW I mean Alleghany, Ashe, Stokes, Surry and Wilkes counties.

1. Mt. Airy (2-0) - the Bears look strong and possibly the class of the NW conference. When Frost gets back they will be lead by a fierce RB tandem. As always the defense is solid and the Bears are one of the most well coached teams around.

2. Surry Central (2-0) - the Eagles look to have their strongest team since the early 2000s. They opened the season by beating two strong teams in East Surry and East Wilkes. Will be interesting for the in the WPAC.

3. Wilkes Central (2-0) - another interesting team. As always have good speed and athletism. When Boles suits up in a couple weeks, they could be a force to be reckoned with in the area.

4. West Stokes (1-1) - the Wildcats look to have another solid team. As always they will continue to improve as the season progresses. Solid program and team in King.

5. Ashe County (1-1) - the Huskies lost big to Watauga but I wouldn't put a lot of stock in that. They look primed to compete for that MVAC championship with what I think the hardest offense to defend in the area.

6. North Surry (1-1) - the Greyhounds have a solid team this season and I look for them to continue to move up this list. They should be right there with West Stokes, SC and Carver in the WPAC. They have an exciting QB.

7. Forbush (2-0) - the Falcons certainly look impressive. I believe this is the year they beat Starmount in the UNIFI. Considered having this team in the top 5. Coach Johnsons squad could prove me wrong.

8. East Wilkes (1-1) - the Cardinals are still trying to find an identity but the talent is there. Once they settle in to their new roles this team will be as good as just about anyone in the area. Ross will be a name everyone is familiar with by seasons end.

9. East Surry (1-1) - the Cardinals like East Wilkes are trying to fill holes. Diamont will have them ready. Another team that could easily jump a few spots as the season continues. You can never sleep on East Surry.

10(T). Alleghany (2-0) - thought about putting the Trojans at number 7 but need to see some more signature wins. Sessions is doing a great job up there and with a lot of returning starters they could be the surprise of the MVAC.

10(T). West Wilkes (1-1) - the Blackhawks have a solid team this year. I think they can really compete for one of the top 3 spots in the MVAC. Led by Ortiz and Walsh this team will play a major factor In the MVAC.

Outside looking in: Starmount (0-2), North Wilkes (1-1)

Thoughts? I will continue to do this each week if the interest is there. I would love to hear everyone's thoughts.

West Montgomery vs Thomasville

The Breakdown:
Thomasville 1-1
After very fast-paced victory over their rival the Albemarle Bulldogs The Bulldogs of Thomasville ran into a bit of a speed bump down at southern lee last night. Thomasville is transitioning into a fast-paced spread offense that last night showed some growing pains. Several turnovers and bonehead penalties were the story of the game for the Bulldogs. Thomasville also has had a bit of a rough off season. They have lost two longtime assistants in Nick Sweitzer and Roger Bryant. Not to mention the strength and conditioning coach left around February to try semi pro football. Tville couldn't get another S&C coach hired until late May causing the Bulldogs to be behind many of their CCC and 2A opponents in in terms of strength and speed. Last night you could tell loosing 9/11 on defense from last season hurts but the 3rd quarter found tville settling down and out gaining southern lee. They will be prepared and ready to play come Friday night at cushwa. The Bulldogs have never lost to WM at home and only hold one loss all time vs the Warriors.

West Montgomery:
2-0

The Warriors have scored 100+ points in two games despite having lost 20+ seniors from last season. Their ability to pass the ball this year has greatly improved due to a change in play calling allowing the once heavy option team to become balanced and possibly very dangerous. Another solid offseason of running and lifting year round has put Wests youth in a great position despite the lack of size. The negatives for the Warriors however are the small young OL starting two sophomores and freshman and the newly installed 4-2-5 / 4-4 defense. Last year the Warriors defense ranked among the tops in the state basing out of an Odd front 3-3-5 type defense. The transition has shown trough their lack of size allowing 200+ yards rushing last night vs west Stanley. Many blown coverage's in the Air show put on by JM the week before.

All in all I expect a flat out old school YVC war between these two teams. The winner could win by 6 or 30 thats how young, talented and inexperienced these two teams are.

On to South Point

Orange Hi Football

Orange is 2-0 and has implemented a pinball type of offense where the backs ricochet thru the defense then go to the sidelines and throw up. It makes for quite a show for the fans and the students are betting whos gonna hurl next. The defense is the usual 'blind side' special that makes backs stagger around like their on a 'Pokemon' hunt. To the fan from N Durham who thumbed for a helicopter in Mosers direction we noticed you left by yourself. A little salad and PT will keep 'Jody' fum the house.

Pisgah vs Enka

Thought the Bears looked sloppy but showed potential in opener. A lot of that is just breaking in the new offense. My main takeaways from the first game
-The new QB looks like he's gonna be a good one for us. Especially liked the way he runs the ball, very shifty
-Parrott has somehow managed to get even better. The kids a beast. He will get those fumbles under control
-I really like the new offense. We are gonna score a lot of points this year
-Our defense is nasty. They may get beat deep against faster teams but they attack the run with ferocity.
I think Enka is about par for the course for them this year and the Bears will win it handily after fixing a lot of the first game problems.
Bears 42 Enka 7

SMAC picks Wk 2

Hunter Huss @ Burns: This is a "pick em" game, in my opinion, hard to call this one, I will go with the Dawgs at home 24-21, Burns.

Cherryville @ Chase: Trojans over Ironmen. 42-21 Chase

Shelby @ ACR:
The Rockets scoring only 6 points in a loss to West Forsyth doesn't bode well for them versus a high powered Shelby team. 34-14 Shelby

RS @ Stuart Cramer: 28-21 Hilltoppers

Ashbrook @ Crest:
Crest rebounds this week, 21-7 Chargers.

Draughn @ Freedom: 35-21 Patriots

East Gaston @ KM: the Mountaineers in a blowout, 45-7 KM

North Gaston @ East Rutherford: 31-14 Cavs

East Burke @ Patton:
Patton wins. 31-21 Patton
