Red Springs @ South Columbus - Round 1

Two weeks ago, the Stallions handed it to the Red Devils 51-32 @ Red Springs. Red Springs has a good team and it's hard to beat a good team twice. Stallions will need to stay focused and not let the results of the last meeting give us a big head. The Devils pass attack is very dangerous. BUT..............the Stallions moved the ball pretty easily against them and are more focused than ever at moving to the 2nd round. I see a high scoring game here with the Stallions getting an exciting win! GO STALLIONS!!

Albemarle @ Thomas Jefferson Academy

Might as well get it started.

I don't know a whole lot about TJA, so I went to YouTube and checked them out and also checked out their competition this season on max preps. On YouTube, the only game that was relevant was against Mountain Island Charter. MIC is not a strong team, and even though TJA beat them, they gave up 30+ points to them, so they probably put in the third stringers for cleanup duty is my guess. Their competition this season was weak, I didn't see an impressive win anywhere. One thing I was impressed with was their energy! Those guys seemed to be a well-nit unit and regardless of the competition, they play together.

Breakdown:

TJA QB #3 is big and physical from what I could tell, and throws the ball fairly decent. He seems to be the offense for the ground game. They have some good receivers with #14, #7 and #80. I couldn't tell how their defense was.

As far as Albemarle goes, we are still missing our identity. I hope after Friday, they know a little more about themselves. I don't see Emery coming back from turf toe, that is a nagging injury and will take time to heal, so we may possibly go into this game without him.

It looks like we're back with Caleb at QB, which may be a blessing in disguise. I said at the beginning of the season that #11 was more of an athlete, but it seems that Caleb is a better leader which is more important and what this team needs. I haven't seen our young group of guys so someone will have to shed light on that for me.

Our low numbers will hurt us in the 4th quarter, so if it's close, I look for TJA to pull out this W and Albemarle will be in Basketball shorts before you know it.

MAC playoff discussion round 1

(10)Asheville at (7) Erwin for the second time in 7 days. I said before this game is for bragging rights for Erwin, a chance to save face after last night for Asheville and the opportunity to get either of our asses beat the following week against Crest. As for us, I don't know how as a coach, you can get this team back after that debacle last night. What a bunch of cry babys we have on our roster. Like I said, the big guy who got hurt didn't say a single word to a teammate last night in the second half. He was asleep on the sideline, not cheering for his guys and completely uninterested. That's sad. Then the heart and soul of the team goes off the deep end, for a reason we still don't know. I just don't know how the result in 6 days could be any better than the one last night. Maybe I will be wrong. Also, can someone please explain to me why we continue for the last 15 years to play backups on our special teams? We were gonna get the ball back with 5 mins left down 8 nearly at midfield and one of our guys who ONLY plays special teams lets the ball touch him and that was basically the game right there.
Offensively, Erwin doesn't have the horses they have had in years past, but their offensive scheme is phenomenal. The plays they run are creative, fun to watch and effective. Bucky Tarr and Mike Sexton have such a grasp on that offense that even without D1 talent, they keep you so off guard its hard to stop. But as I said last night, we held them basically to 14 points and we still lost, so that tells you how our offense is firing. Asheville last night had 4 turnovers (3 picks and a muffed punt) and 100+ yards in penalties. I think we only punted twice. I say at this point we should just go 4-5 wide. That's the only way we can get their 7-9 guys out of the box. We will see... We have to change something up because last night was a disgrace to Asheville high football. 6 points SMH.

(14) Piedmont at (3) AC Reynolds: Reynolds earned the right to play a cupcake in the first round. They advance easily, but I believe they play either Weddington who beat our ass the last 2 years and beat Reynolds ass last year in round 2. Or Cuthberston with their quarterback who has committed to Oklahoma. Either way it will certainly be a game in round 2. Reynolds easily wins this week though.

(11) Seventy First at (6) TC Roberson: A 9-2 team from Fayetteville is coming 275 miles up the mountain to play a team that is 3-8. There is something very wrong with that. Seventy first wins big I think.

SMC Pick 'em Playoffs Week 1

OK, we're using the 1-A and 1-AA West brackets for the playoffs (16 games this week). At 5 points per game, that's 80 possible points. Every week (except the last) the number of games will be halved, so every week (except the last) the jeopardy will double, to keep the possible points at 80, so regional and state championship games will be worth up to 40 points each.

Everybody starts with a clean slate, so if you haven't played before now, or want to jump back in, now's the time!
