SMAC Picks WK 6

RS @ Crest: Crest is slowing becoming Crest again, however, I think RS will compete against them. 28-14 Crest.

East Burke @ Burns: Knew Burns would be competitive coming into the season, but would have never imagined them being undefeated at this point of the season. 30-10 Bulldogs

Kings Mountain @ Shelby: I have this gut feeling that the "worst good" offense that Shelby has had in awhile will show up and show out Friday. As for the Mountaineers, it will take a couple of games for the their sophomore quarterback to get his feet underneath him, but whenever he does, look out. He's a great athlete and will become special as a dual threat quarterback as he progresses. He, along with McClain and Mack, will become one heck of a backfield. The Lions win The Battle of Buffalo Creek. 41-14 Lions

Chase @ Draughn: Chase has some good athletes. 28-14 Trojans

East Rutherford: BYE

Hickory Lineman Starts at 17 for FSU

Former Hickory High and South Caldwell star Landon Dickerson started for Florida State University. Not even legal yet this kid is going to be a monster lineman. I really thought he would get redshirted for maturity purposes but he impressed so well they punched him in at guard last week. Best recruit in the state. 17 years old. That's still barely a senior in high school.

Catholic @ Berry Preview

Conference/Record: Catholic So Meck 8 3-1(0-0)
Berry So Meck 8 1-3(0-0)
Last Week: Catholic BYE
Berry 14-12 W over West Charlotte
Series Began: 2005
Series Record: Catholic leads 9-0
Last Catholic Win: 2015, 40-14
Last Berry Win: None
Largest Catholic Win: 2005, 57-12
Largest Berry Win: None

Catholic comes off a bye week to start conference play on the road at Berry. The Cougars have won three straight since suffering a tough opening week loss to Christian.
The Cougars have improved every week since the Christian loss it seems on both sides of the ball. The offense has really found their rhythm. Jack Brigham, Milan Howard and Angel Morrero have all been very productive especially Brigham who has been very impressive.
Also QB Brady Berger has come into his own and settled in nicely, his game vs Rocky River was very impressive and with John Newman and Jimmy Abate as his top receivers(not even mentioning any of the RBs coming out of the backfield) I expect he will continue to play well.
On defense, the Cougar secondary has jumped out to me as a vastly improved unit. Two more picks vs Rocky River one by Rob Dumser and the other by Ian Baker.
The Cougars defense has been great so far at forcing turnovers and converting those into touchdowns which going into conference play will be big especially vs South Meck, AK and West Meck.
As for this game I've watched the film of Berry's game with Cuthbertson, haven't gotten to West Charlotte and no disrespect they look like a JV team.
Their size along the DL is comparable to some JV teams I've seen, infact I've seen some bigger.
They do have athletes as always, but their lack of size and discipline will do them in.
Their OL looks like it may have a bit more size than their DL, but not much and their blocking is very suspect especially on run plays.
I think Catholic will be able to do virtually whatever they want on offense in this game, the Cardinals don't have the discipline to stop Catholic.
I think the Catholic defense will have a fine outing as well, I don't see anyone who jumps out at me on film.
Berry is not within 5 TDs of Catholic. Cougars roll.

SMAC Picks Wk 5

Burns @ Kings Mountain: Conference game of the week, it will be a good one. Both teams will have much success running the ball. I'm assuming Hill is good to go w/ the gimpy ankle. Burris is more than capable of filling in, but Burns will need that monster back at his post on defense. I'm sure that he will be given a significant amount of carries, though. KM feature athletes galore, offensively, they have tons of speed. McClain, at running back, is playing some good football. Turnovers will be huge in this game. Execution in the passing game will be critical for both teams, in order to keep the defenses honest. KM is at home, so I will go with the Mountaineers in what should be a heck of a ball game. 30-21 KM

Shelby @ Chase:
The Lions big, 45-14 Shelby.

Crest @ TCR: The Rams over the Chargers in an upset, 21-14 Rams

East Burke @ East Rutherford:
Cavs win, 28-14 ER

Draughn @ RS: 28-14 Hilltoppers

MAC picks week 5

Hard to believe that we are half way through the season. Even harder to believe that Asheville and Erwin are sitting at 1-3 and ACR could be right there with them. All 3 of these teams have played a tough schedule but it is not looking good for the big 3 right now.

Here are this weeks games. Let's here your picks.

Reynolds at Hendersonville
Enka at Brevard
Mitchell at North Buncombe
McDowell at Owen
Roberson at Crest
Erwin at Franklin

My picks...

Reynolds 42 Hendo 21...Reynolds survived a close one last week but should be ok this week against the Bearcats. Hendo is a decent team but they have not played anyone worth a crap either till now.

Brevard 21 Enka 14...Enka picked up a much needed W vs a bad team this week. I think Brevard is improved enough that it wont happen again this week.

Mitchell 35 NB 21...Mitchell is undefeated but has yet to step on the field with a good team yet. That wont happen this week either.

Owen 28 McDowell 24...Neither team is very good this season but I think the Warhorses will pull out a close one late at home.

Crest 35 Roberson 14...Roberson is the feel good story in the MAC right now. I was impressed they beat Freedom on the road after playing a complete cupcake schedule so far. This week is a whole different story. Crest may down a little but they should roll Friday night.

Erwin 49 Franklin 42...I am being optimistic here because right now is not a good time for my Warriors and the tough opponents just keep coming. Erwin can score on anyone pretty easily but their defense couldn't stop a middle school team right now. I just don't get it. Going to the pit is not a place to lick your wounds. Hopefully they will just get in a shoot out with the Panthers...
