After an impressive win over Hayesville, the Rosman Tigers will travel to face a Wildcats' team that has beaten them the last 3 times that Rosman has visited the northeastern part of Cherokee County with Andrews winning 26-21 in 2013...
Most folks will say this is a trap game for the Tigers, since Robbinsville will be coming to Tigertown the following week, and those folks would be right...
Here's a brief history between the Tigers and Wildcats:
The first opponent from the current SMC that the Tigers played was Andrews way back in 1962 in Rosman's 3rd year of organized play....The Tigers lost that first meeting in dramatic fashion, dropping a wide-open HB pass on the game's final play in a 34-33 loss to the Wildcats....Trying to toughen-up his team against better competition, Coach Bill Cathy scheduled a regular season game with Andrews for the first time in 1964 with the Wildcats winning that one 39-13...Andrews would later claim the Region 4 title over Mars Hill 30-27 that same season...In 67', Rosman's season would once again end at the hands of the Wildcats in the playoffs as Andrews won 27-7...Later, Andrews would claim the only Western 1A Title that was ever awarded as the Wildcats beat Tryon 34-7 to claim the West, while Ayden would beat Liberty 20-14 in the East in the final year of divided 1A titles, until the state began awarding 2 1A titles in 2001...
It would be another 6 years before Rosman and Andrews would meet again, and this time it would be a SMC game in 1973 that would end in an 8-8 tie, which is the only tie between the two teams in this series....In 74', Andrews would shutout the Tigers(38-0) for the first time in another conference game...Rosman would leave the SMC after that 74' season to join the new Appalachian Conference in 1975 with members Cherokee, Tryon, Polk Central, Edneyville and NCSD....It would be 9 years before Rosman and Andrews would meet again on the gridiron with Rosman picking-up their first ever win and shutout of the Wildcats, beating the 83' SMC Champs on the road 21-0...The two teams would schedule non-conference games in 85' and 86' with Rosman winning both those games by 25-0 and 53-6 scores...In 89'-91', Andrews would shutout the Tigers twice in beating Rosman 3 times in 3 non-conference games between the two...In 92', the final non-conference game was played between the two teams with Rosman winning 37-14....
Beginning in 1993, Rosman rejoined the SMC, and the Tigers would record their first ever SMC victory over the Wildcats, beating Andrews 38-27....Andrews would bounce back in 94' to beat the Tigers 35-13 before Rosman would reel off 14 consecutive SMC victories between 1995-2008, before Andrews ended the streak in dramatic fashion with a 38-0 shutout of the Tigers in 2009, beginning a streak of 4 straight Wildcat victories that ended in Rosman in 2012 with a 43-26 SMC win by the Tigers....In 2013, Andrews would win at home 26-21 with the Tigers rallying to win last year in Rosman by the score of 27-18....
Andrews has beaten common opponents Brevard and Hayesville this season, and has beaten Rosman the last 3 times that the teams have played in Andrews, so this is not going to be an easy "W" for the Tigers this friday as many believe....
The two teams have met 35 times thru the years with Rosman holding a 21-13-1 edge in the All-Time series between the two teams...
In SMC play, Rosman holds a 17-6-1 advantage....
In playoffs meetings between the two, Andrews holds a 3-1 advantage....
For the Tigers to have a chance this friday, they will have to contain QB Taylor Parker and RB Dillon Ward in order to break the 3-game losing streak to the Wildcats in Andrews, and it's likely to be a Homecoming game too boot...
Needless to Say, Rosman needs to stay focused on one opponent at a time, and this week's focus needs to be solely on the Wildcats of Andrews....
Roar Tigers Roar!
