Here is one that may show my ignorance but is a decent deer story.

I am all set up at 3:00 in a bottom between a cutdown and an uncut beam field. Farmer starts combining the field at about 3:30. Not to worry, I know farmers that have killed deer from the combine and deer don’t seem to be too worried.

At 4:30 a small white pick up drives down the edge of the field and passes within 50 yards of me. After he passes I can no longer see him but I hear someone walking in the bottom where I am hunting. He has parked and is slipping in to hunt my land I think to myself.

My buddy has a lock on stand and 2 cameras in the direction he was walking. I have a trespasser or a thief! I hustle down the tree in my climber and pack up. I then set my stuff by the creek and head off the find the rascal. Ill that he is there and I am having to walk over the area I am trying to hunt. I am making more noise than usual because I don’t want to get shot. After around 300 yards I come up empty. Too late to climb again, so I walk just to the edge of the field to see if I can take a pic of the truck and license plate. To my surprise the truck is 400 yards away on the other side of the field. The guy never stopped and what I heard was a deer he scared - not 50 yards from me. Boy did I feel ridiculous!!!

Walked about 200 yards back towards the truck and sat down beside and old oak and ground hunted for 30 minutes, all the time chuckling at myself.

Ultimately he may have saved me because its a 800 yard drag back to the truck.

I never cease to amaze myself.

GREAT deer story sir!

Watching the PBS episode of Ken Burns’ “The National Parks”. Every documentary done by Ken Burns should be mandatory viewing by every American. Kidd, I know you can appreciate the one on “Baseball, the American Pastime”.

It's a shame there are calls to defend PBS. Dang shame.

Watched it when first came out. Early 90s maybe? Think nine episodes. Have watched the 60s and 70s episodes a bunch since then. That was the golden era of that sport to me. 80s were ok.
Burns is a fine storyteller as well. He makes even Neanderthals like me wake up and pay attention. 😂

So far just two does going through broom straw about 300 yards away from stand which is in the woods…
Have to get down fairly soon unfortunately. Woman talking about some holiday coming up and “we aren’t even close to ready!” 🤷‍♂️
Been a good cold morning though!

Woman putting her foot down. You been playing long enough

Yep, my wife bought me a Browning A Bolt with a Leupold scope back in 1989. Still use the rifle today because it means a lot to me.
Same. Remington was around 88. Scope is a VX2 so maybe five years later? Momma gave me daddy’s BAR two Christmases back. Try to take first one every year with it since. Right now it’s two for two. 7400 got left out last season because of muzzleloader wide deer. It’s itching to get back in the game 😂

No sir. But my A5 Magnum is. In 1976 my brother and I received two A5s, a twelve and twenty. Daddy looked everywhere for a Belgium twelve and couldn’t find a new one. Long story short, little brother got a Belgium twenty and I got first year Japan twelve.
Bought myself the Magnum about twenty years ago…

Really I did not know they made Belgium 20 I thought it was only 12,16 and maybe a 410?

@wncbowhunter how are things up your way? Storm came through here awhile ago but wasn’t nearly as bad as they thought. Made me think of y’all. Hopefully things have returned to at least some type of normal, well as close as can be expected.
On the deer front I went yesterday afternoon even though it was very warm. Was considering taking one of the six does that have been showing up on the regular. Up until 5:15 nothing. Then that stupid tall six showed up strutting like he owned the world. He does until next season 😂.
He comes running towards my left and busts two does back across the field to the right running about 50 mph. Then he struts back across same field like the king of all he surveyed…
Was an exciting afternoon but he messed my plans up 😂

Thanks for asking. Things are slowly getting better. As you say still a loooonnnnnggggg way from normal. Most roads are now open. Some are gravel or have had the chad put on them. Some roads are still one lane with temp red lights or just barriers. Pretty much all tent folks who want or need a camper have gotten one. Only true grocery store is still a few months from opening, but we do have a wal mart that is open. Many businesses are still either closed or have been relocated to temp or new locations. Have heard of a couple temp bridges that was washed out/away this morning re-stranding some folks. Still a lot of folks trying to deal with a lot of downed trees both in around their homes or across large acreage.
Can’t say enough about the help and support the area has received from individuals, churches, and other groups. As far as (non-local)Government support well, that’s a topic for a non sports board.
On the deer front, haven’t been in a while. MAY try in the morning for a couple hours before work. No idea where to go but anywhere is better than nowhere.

Go Mountaineers

Man I wish I did. Unfortunately life got in the way and I got out of it

Love to hear those little fellas burning one up!
Was my introduction to hunting. Daddy never carried a gun, just a stick. When they would get the rabbit turned to come back to me it was the coolest thing to an eight year old.
Daddy used to have a jump dog that somebody offered him like $800 back when that was a fortune to me. That little beagle died from old age at Daddy’s house. He said a good jump dog was priceless. I miss both him and his beagles every day.

Best jump dog we had was an ole jip that was a stray that came up one day. Def had some beagle in her but still a mut. Got one now that might be good but she is a cross between a fiest and beagle…..dog can fly

My last 2 sits have been me in the tree and a few squirrels. Not even a doe. I plan to be there on the afternoon of the 1st to help usher this season out. Always glad for the season to start but equally glad for it to end as I am usually worn out. May try a couple duck trips before turkey season but I am ready to pull all my stands and pack up for next year.

I enjoy this thread Kidd. Thanks.

Thank @wncbowhunter…
He’s a kindred spirit of all us tree dwellers. Even though I just know him through this platform I know he’s the kind of man I could spend a week at a deer camp with. Telling deer stories until the wee hours (ok 9pm because have to get up early 😂)…
I thoroughly enjoy swapping tales with all yall. Hopefully it’s a tradition that will not end when we get busted up next season. You gentlemen make my time spent 15-20 feet up more enjoyable.
Somebody @ me next deer season and we will run it back…
(I still have 2 days left to try and get that wide 7. I’ll holler if I do…then I’ll post it on here after 😂)…

Oh and don’t give up. I watched the squirrel parade for about a week. Since Christmas I’ve seen three different bucks in daylight, one almost shooter…
Got my sights set on that 7 🤷‍♂️

Well this morning was interesting…
Foggy! Couldn’t see 50 yards until like 8AM.
At 8:15 a buttonhead paid a visit, grunting like a 12 point, at about 35 yards. Stayed awhile too! And on a day I had decided to help with population control..:
Only deer I saw.
Back in tree again and wind from that cold front right in my face at about 20mph…
Only got three sits left gentlemen and this is the last one of 2024…
