This time of year is hard to beat. Deer hunting and high school football.

A little windy this morning but I am sitting in a ground blind hoping a mature, blind, nasal congested buck ambles by. Been an unusual year - vary warm and lots of small bucks but very few does.

While I’m waiting for that buck I am getting ready for the next round of high school football My team is preparing for basketball season but there still many good matchups to consider.

I am losing confidence every day, so any hunters out there - tell me a good story!!!

Went yesterday afternoon. Had put half a bag of corn out two days ago because son might hurt over Thanksgiving. Got card out of camera and got up in stand. Started looking through pictures on viewer. Saw something out of corner of my eye and four does came prancing by and went straight to little corn that was left. Returned to looking at the 315 pictures that it took in those two days. Got a nice young ten point I’ve never seen before. And apparently there was a 7 point who was out there five minutes before me yesterday.
He never showed last evening and does blew at me when I got down.
How’s that for a story?
It’s all us old guys can do.

Nothing but bucks on our side of the interstate high way

I am still hunting and it’s been a parade of young bucks this morning- 5 in all.

That’s a good story. My friend in Greensboro was hunting the other day and got down at 830 for the call of nature and a big 10 showed up on his camera an hour later.

Still hoping……..

Sounds familiar. Lots of bucks but does seem to be less in numbers. Been dwindling last couple years. Went to Willis,Va yesterday evening. Not much confidence since hadn't had much on camera. Didn't see anything but camera had lots of small bucks, one good buck, 3 does and one huge bear. That bear has not missed any meals.

Wanted to give you a report from 15 feet up a two man ladder sir. Today is first day of rifle season around here. So far have had six does, of various sizes, come sauntering by. Around 6:50 had the tall, narrow eight I have on camera make an appearance. He will be nice in another year but doubt he makes it. Thinking of you and yours sir. Hopefully things are improving. People tend to forget when things rotate out of the news cycle.
Hey Kidd, scored big time on a 10 I’ve been after for a few years last weekend

Well today gentlemen is a reminder to me why we call it hunting. Been in a tree since 5:30 this morning and all I have seen is the squirrel parade. First time this season I haven’t at least had a doe or two come say hello.
It’s ok though. Was a great morning spent outdoors!!!

Lot of wind? 15-25 sustained up here in Ashe County. Noticed on the cameras that my neighbor came in about 5:30. Pretty accomplished fella with fire stick. And a helluva nice guy.

@wncbowhunter this is meant for you but anyone else is welcome to comment or whatever.
Don’t usually hunt on Sundays because well, daddy wouldn’t have but been windy and busy around here so set alarm and decided to head out this morning. As I headed to truck at 5:15 there were deer in my yard. One blew at me. Plan changed and I decided to hunt stand here at my house. Around daylight five does decided they were no longer afraid and wandered by at about 60 yards. Well that was interesting but…
Around 7:15 I heard another deer fighting his way past the squirrel army. Finally steps out at about 50 yards and it’s the 10 point I’ve been after this season. At 7:30 as I stood over him I did indeed think of you sir. I’m sorry for everything you and those you care about have endured. I hope that my little tale was as interesting to you as it is to me.

First, Congratulations. Second thanks for the kind words. Hope to get a couple days in the woods this week. But who know. All I know is I am thankful for all.

Well, I woke up Sunday mornin'
With no way to hold my head that didn't hurt
And the beer I had for breakfast wasn't bad
So I had one more for dessert
Then I fumbled in my closet through my clothes
And found my cleanest dirty shirt
Then I warshed my face and combed my hair
And stumbled down the stairs to meet the day.

Johnny Cash… “Sunday morning coming down”

Go ahead! Kidd🫵

And if you actually are a true Southerner…
Went down to your local Baptist church and sat on the back row…😂😂😂

Ok that’s my version of the perfect country and western song…
Sorry David Alan…

You guys gotta work on your country music skills. Anybody can sing it, (and have), but not just anybody can write it. “Sunday mornin’ comin’ down” by the great Kris Kristofferson. And that perfect country sing was Steve Goodman.😁

First of all sir I can’t sing, ain’t much of a poet and know it…😂
Secondly Kristofferson, in my opinion, was a great writer but wasn’t a fan of his singing, like Willie.
And finally, I used to play that David Alan Coe on eight track tape until it wore slap out… couldn’t wind the tape back in. 😂😂😂
So I knew who actually added the last verses to his perfect country and western song…😀😀

Always tickles me how few people give Kris credit for his writing skills and don’t realize how many of their favorite songs were written by him. Hell, if Ray Price can make one of his songs a hit, he must be good.

" You Never Even Called Me By My Name " was written by Steve Goodman and John Prine. Hoping you and yours are well, Mister Kidd, and good luck Friday against the team that sounds like a bottle of after shave lotion.

I was just getting ready to digitally holler at you on this here thread so you would post one of my favorite songs…
As usual you do not disappoint…
I keep thinking of fine Corinthian leather and Ricardo Montleban….

Mea culpa, GSO! Totally left our Mr. Prine, my favorite musical artist of all. Thanks for correcting that and please don’t tell my wife😂

Warren Haynes, Asheville native and ex guitarist for the Allman Brothers Band, played in David Allan Coe's band for a couple of years before hookin' up with the Brothers. There was a club in downtown Greensboro on the corner of Market Street and Davie Street in the early 80s called The Boardwalk , and Mister Coe and his band made an appearance there, probably in '80 or '81. Mister Coe was an absolute wild man at his gigs.

Well that was interesting. Had about 2 hours yesterday that I could sneak off and get in the woods. Get to favorite spot and Landowner stops me, which is normal. Tells me about all the deer he is seeing. He then says hey I need to see a doe when you leave. So while unplanned and really not what I would normally do during the peak of the rut. I was able to show him a doe when I left:
But still thankful for the opportunity and blessed to provide some good eating to some folks who could use the meat.

Now to see if I can go back and see what I am after.

Failed to get out of bed this morning in time to hunt. Was supposed to wake at 4 to be in the tree by 5:45. Been a tough year for some reason and I have been a little down. Questioning my ability as a deer hunter as if that’s what defines me. I understand that in 10 seconds my whole season could turn around. Like most of you, I spend a lot of time and effort chasing these antlered guys.

Decided that I will take the few days off and try to get this thing back into perspective. Rather than lament my poor season, I am choosing to put it in perspective. I am a lucky man, healthy, great family and just over all blessed.

A little ashamed I have let it get the best of me. Need to let the pursuit be the reward any success be a bonus.

So glad you got in the woods for a little bit. And got to show off a doe! Seems like most of us “serious” deer hunters take for granted that the success rate for most people is not all that high. It all hit home for me when, in a community south of here where dog hunting is legal, we were helping a landowner thin out some a few years ago. Anyway four does were jumped and ended up heading straight to me. I was lucky enough to get three. Was mad at myself for not getting the fourth when a young hunter came up to me and said congratulations. That person had never killed a deer before. That shined a new light on things for me.
Congratulations on getting in the woods and the successful hunt. Hopefully big boy, or his older brother walks by you soon.

It’s all about the journey brother. Ain’t a contest. Your ability to get out there is all that’s important. When I was younger, believe it or not, it was all about getting the biggest deer I could find. I STAYED 20 feet up all season. Finally got THAT deer in 1995. Last deer I had mounted, ok truthfully have done three for my son but none for me, because I said had to be bigger than him. That competitive nature is great in sports when you’re young, not so much when you get older. After my little adventure at age 53 I am more about the experience than the success rate. Went three seasons a couple of years ago where I didn’t pull the trigger. Didn’t matter.
Have I harvested some good deer? Yes sir, many would love to do the same. Does it matter if I don’t? No sir because I get to breathe the outdoors in addition to hugging my children another day.
Those are the important things in life, at least to me.

Exactly. I have been trying to put my daughter on one for now 3 days. She did jump one up yesterday morning but things are just slow. Got mine with smoke stick and bow so don't care if I see anything. Squirrels are great entertainment

No they aren’t!
Don’t you remember when you were young and three squirrels running through leaves made you think a herd of deer were coming?

Glad I got that off my chest…
Now old and usually see deer before I can hear them 😂😂😂

Hopefully she gets one in the near future. That’s the coolest thing seeing it on their faces when they succeed

Back in the tree again, mostly because it’s supposed to rain in the morning and I don’t hunt in the rain. Anyway read back over this thread some and realized while I was spewing from atop my soapbox I forgot to tell y’all about morning hunt. Duh…
Anyway got in stand about thirty minutes before daylight. Nice morning. Around 6:45 had five very nervous does come by from beside me. Around 7 two more does from behind me. While those two are meandering around the tallest six point I’ve ever seen steps out and he wants a date. He ran all over the woods, trying to get some attention. I looked at him three times through scope hoping for some points but despite being a foot and a half high, wasn’t even close to outside his ears. Young deer too. Hope he makes it through until next year (and me as well 😂)
Well after all the Dating Game contestants get gone I sit for about another hour. Two more does showed up and paid me no mind.
It was a GREAT morning to be outside!

Man I’m long winded ain’t I?
Sorry turning into the old uncle at Thanksgiving dinner 🤷‍♂️

This thread needs a bump…
It was 19 degrees here this morning. Set the alarm for 5:30 and drug my sorry self out of bed and into a tree. About 7:30 four does paid a visit. One at a time! About 30 yards apart so I had to pay attention the whole time.
That’s it though. Nothing else and it was cold!
Told yall, just wanted to bump thread 😂

Well this year has turned out to be rather good. Much better than I anticipated. Been fortunate to have a few more opportunities than expected. Took an 8pt last week. Not my best but solid. Also taken a couple doe for families in need. 18° here this morning had deer on their feet. Had opportunities at a few including a couple bucks but either not what I wanted or way 2 far.
Hope to get another chance next weekend.
