Shelby needs a Week 3 opponent

Coach Wilbanks been trying to get someone in week 3.. Most already are filled, or simply want play.
Note game 3 is in between AC and Crest...and to be honest we dont need a high profile game...nothing to prove but getting injurys etc.
Possible it could be AL Brown word is there available. Hope to get game sch. Soon

So after scaring off Draughn and Patton, you can't find any other cupcakes so you're forced to play 3 tough games in a row? I get it.

Seems to me like we play at least 3 tough games in a row every year. Man you are such a Shelby hater. I understand though...envy.

He don’t understand that’s how we maintain playoff success...our non conference is county teams and 4aor 3a schools so when we get to playoffs the competition is a downgrade in a sense...those mountain teams we end up playing don’t compare to the teams we played in regular season

They have a fellow 2A team that has been in the mix and will probably fill that date. I think when Lance resigned he felt it was better for the next coach to decide the opponent.
btango, have you any new info on week 3 opponents for the Golden Lions? I am hearing only 10 games is what the schedule will be.

I’m hearing no one wants to play us. No one wants that smoke w/ the Golden Ones. Just kidding, just wanted to get a millisecond rise out of Chopper, Blue and Gold, a couple of the Charlotte posters, maybe a clown from Reidsville. I’m certain it will be filled soon, no way our coaches want two openings on the schedule.

No rise from me, nobody respects the smoke of Shelby more than this guy

I’m pretty sure Mountain Heritage has an opening if Shelby is still interested I could try and get in touch with Coach Robinson.

Does not look like either have a game that week. They may still be working on it. I think Shelby May think this a year to take an extra week off. That would be a tough game for MH and probably a brawl for Shelby but nothing they are not accustomed to with the schedule they already have.

After looking at Mountain Heritage's schedule I would not schedule that game. They already play Pisgah, Erwin, Hendersonville, and Stuart Cramer. If one of those games were not scheduled Shelby and may be a lesser opponent may be a good list. The number goal is to win a state title. It is great to play strong comepition to ready you for that road but you also do not want to beat yourself down. It is a fine line.

Shelby always plays an impressive schedule but they have a lot of options right in their backyard. Also, with their gates they are attractive financially. Shelby has Freedom, AC Reynolds, Crest, and Kings Mountain to open and close out with a tough rival South Point.

Mt Heritage did not wanna play us..they were contacted but declined...
A few other schools also Declined.
Coach Wilbanks then decided to contact Vance cause they had a week 3 opening...but. Was late they filled it. As of now we may have 2 open dates

Vance was open to playing and looked as if it may happen. Vance was waiting on a reply from Shelby. Shelby was a bit hesitant and was looking at other options. When Lance started speaking with App State he decided to leave the scheduling for the next coach.

Coach Wilbanks contacted Them week or so back but to late...we will be fine. ..alot of new experiences for coach Wilbanks but he will do fine job. Kinda late getting things together with. Announcing a new coach and. Banquet etc...
Next year he will be more prepared

Shelby's schedule is more than sufficient in my opinion. Personally, Mountain Heritage would have been a good opponent for them. One that would have pushed them a bit and made them work but would be a W. After playing the first two games playing Vance before Crest and Kings Mountain is a physical grind. For income purposes and to give the folks an extra game it would be nice to fill the date but an open date to prepare for the two biggest rivals is a very nice luxury.

I totally agree with you, had Rosman and Hayesville still been on our schedule playing Shelby wouldn’t be so bad, but 3 of our 5 non conference games are on the road (Cramer, Hendersonville, and Pisgah) so I can’t really blame them for not wanting to play Shelby. I still think it would make one hell of a game though

Would be a fun matchup but I dont know why Shelby would do it. In the end its about rings and Shelby seems to have a pretty decent formula in place for that goal.

I’m not sure if your coaches have contacted them yet, but Polk County is another team that’s got week 3 opening that would be a relatively easy game for Shelby compared to the rest of their non conference schedule

They played Polk a couple times in the early part of the decade. Not sure the Wolverines would be interested in renewing.

I heard that even THE NEW ENGLAND PATRIOTS would not come and play the AILMIGHTY GOLDEN LIONS in week three. When asked BILICHICK said NO WAY.

Call Robbinsville. I'm not part of the staff but I'm sure we need a game week 3.
I think it would need to be in Robbinsville. If not ww wont have any home games and thats bad for a school with 350 kids. We need the gate. Who know we might come to you.

Yeah its really not good for either team for many reasons but it would be 2 historical programss.

I’d love to see another Heritage- Robbinsville game personally, but that would probably have to be an away game for Robbinsville.

Now that it’s been mentioned on another thread Erwin would be another excellent week 3 match up for Shelby, they’d be about a mirror image of Freedom talent wise.

Would love to see a Statesville vs. Shelby matchup. Have Statesville-Shelby ever played?

I believe in 1986 Shelby beat Statesville in the playoffs. If I am not mistaken they were the team that watered the field before the game.Somebody correct me if I'm wrong.

I believe we played Lincolnton, Owen, East Rutherford, and Forest Hills before the championship that year. Maybe not in that exact order.

Statesville was the western regional (round 4) game in 1988 we beat them 24-0 before getting throat punched by Cummings the next week 41-14

Erwin want play.im friends with coach Pruett and he said no.. Its in between important games for them week 4 with AC.

That game was a changing of the guard so to speak in NC high school football. Cummings was truly a team with great athletes that decided to tune up the passing game as had not been seen in that state before. They were not relying on a gimmick hoping to win a few games but used as a focus of a very good O. Kudos to Dave Gutshall and his staff.
