Shelby needs a Week 3 opponent

That game was a changing of the guard so to speak in NC high school football. Cummings was truly a team with great athletes that decided to tune up the passing game as had not been seen in that state before. They were not relying on a gimmick hoping to win a few games but used as a focus of a very good O. Kudos to Dave Gutshall and his staff.

I remember seeing Cummings in USA Today top 25 that year.

That was the first time I heard of a run and shoot style offense in NC. ALL their receivers were tall and fast(I think they had 1 short one), and the one running back and the back ups were all bulldozers.

How do you think Cummings would have fared(sp?) against Richmond or West Charlotte that same year.

They would have scored a lot of points on either team.

I think Richmond dominates and I am not sure they put up big numbers on Richmond. Cummings fought tooth and nail three straight weeks scoring three TDS in each win to get to the title game.

Richmond had the ability to grind up and down the field with a loaded backfield and would have been much larger in both lines. Cummings would have struggled on the line of scrimmage with Richmond and would have been at a disadvantage getting them off the field. Richmond was loaded on the front seven, also! They went for it on fourth downs inside the forty. When they were backed up Mike Thomas could flip the field. Those intangibles make it a tough night for Cummings.

You aren't kidding.. Mike Thomas was an unreal athlete and he could punt a ball (at high school level) as good as anyone I've seen... ball just sounded different coming off that foot than most kickers

Cummings brought something to Shelby that year none of us has seen ... Chopper is right, receivers tall and lanky back was a little bowling ball, we were playing off the ball a good 10 yards and they threw little short passes out and ate us alive.... it was 30-0 at the half... They were extremely impressive to watch... Even though it was a "throat punching" to my Golden Lions

This is how outmatched we were against Cummings in 1988

Shelby Rushing: 111 yards 11 passing

Cummings: 175 Rushing 334 Passing

Thanks to Statmans records for the numbers above
