As for the game and not the pissing contest, I think Mount Airy wins by 2 TD or possibly 3. I don't think that is a bad thing to say or an exaggeration.
At the same time, they could just as easily lose if turnovers happen, I mean the ER-MA game showed that. I still think ER was a close match to MA. I think this is Mount Airy's most complete team ever even if they don't win the the Championship.
They have not been held to less than 40 points in a game this year. They have only been scored on 3 or 4 times all year by driving the down the field. 2 or 3 of the scores they have given up were blown coverage or in one case a fumble recovered in the endzone. Robbinsville has a tough task ahead and if they are able to do it I will eat my crow and heap praise upon them. They will have earned it. Robbinsville is a very good team. I have watched several games this year (not in person). They can win this, I just don't think they do. I think Adam's will get his yards and may even break through for a long one at some point (though my bet would be it will have to be to the outside). Calhoun may struggle to get as much as usual running up the middle. He come off as more of their powerback from what I have seen. If Robbinsville is going to win, I think they will have to do as Murphy did in the first half and control time of possession, but do it for the whole game. Sustaining long drives like that on MA defense is hard and I don't see it happening a whole game. And when you don't, congratulations, your down a TD. You pretty much need to score every possession. I think Robbinsville's pass game will have to play a part in this. I don't think MA has much in terms of weaknesses on D, but if they do it's pass defense. Sometimes the defensive front is too aggressive and a screen pass could get by if they get it off in time. A couple of times, the DBs have slipped or didn't cover a guy(Murphy game with presnap shifts). There is risk in passing though, as the DBs are the same speed guys on offense, so they can close fast, especially Revels. On special teams, as risky as it may be, I don't think you short kick on kickoffs and give MA an even shorter field. Give you defense a chance to get a stop and short field helps MA as they have an excellent kicker even if they don't punch it in from a short field. If nothing else, I would just kick it out of bounds.
Robbinsville does have good linebackers and I think their chance to win will depend on them and the backfield making good calls and open field tackles. Mason, Martin, and Reid will require it or they will be off for the races and they usually win those. I expect it will be a good game. I will hopefully be able to watch it on grahamstarsports. Hope everyone travels safe, fans have a good time, and players have injury free game.
As an honest question, have some of you SMC guys watched some Mount Airy games this year or just seen highlights on maxpreps and hudl?
