Morehead

I like the way you talk about yourself in the "third person" coach.
You know what happens when you assume don't you? I've been called a lot of things, but I'd take that as a compliment.

I'm an Eden native. Don't think the person you are referencing has ever lived here.

Kudos to you for trying though.

Heard an offer was made but candidate turned it down so admin had to go back to drawing board.
Just curious, why does a candidate apply, go through the interview process,(probably several interviews) Had many opportunities to ask questions, then turn down the job when offered.

I am asking this in a serious way, I do not know the answer..

If the process goes that far and the candidate turns it down chances are it was not a good fit for his family or he could have a better offer somewhere else.

I would guess lack of money, support or autonomy. Or sometimes all three.
I know of a coach who decided he didn’t want the job because he never interviewed with the AD. Just the principal and head of the boosters’ club.

All of those are major factors in the situation. Also housing issues to resolve, spouses job prospects, finding out some things post interview that makes you change your mind, etc. So many things come up.

This coach was approached by the admin who asked them to apply. It wasn't something he sought out.

If the Admin ask him to apply - I would think he would be one of their top choices then correct? I understand maybe their were disagreements or maybe he didnt want to apply at all but just wanted hear them out possibly?

That's what i'm thinking, it never hurts to listen to what others are offering. It just must of not been enough for him to leave the position he was in currently

Being a Shakespeare fan I must quote from Hamlet. “To thine own self be true." IMO, Morehead suffers from an identity crisis. They need an Eden guy leading them.

Hire Mike Hodges! There, I said it. Someone that matters needs to at least talk to him. He's been out of coaching a few years now but he has kept up with the game and he has been in the building teaching so he knows these kids.

Talked to Mike on Monday. He emphatically said he wanted nothing to do with it. He was focusing on family and getting his masters. I guess anyone can change their mind though. He would definitely bring stability…

Don't know who you are but if you are not the principal, or maybe the AD, at MHS, you don't matter.

No offense intended. Just facts.

No need to be a prick. I was just letting you. So, apparently the facts are that your opinion doesn’t matter either….

LOL, I said no offense intended. Didn't mean for you to get your panties in a wad.

My point was I don't think he will tell anyone how he truly feels unless they are the ones making the decision and yes, I guess that includes me too.

I have known him though for a while and I know he misses coaching. Anyone that knows him knows he isn't a fake person but I think he tells a lot of people he isn't that close to what he thinks they want to hear.

IMO, he is the perfect fit for MHS. I stand by that.

No pantie wading… I think stability wise he is a perfect fit. I think he has such a sour taste because of the last go round that he would definitely need coaxed into it.

Closing in on two months without a head football coach. What in the world is taking so long? These kids need a coach, they need to be getting ready for spring ball and lifting but there is no leader. Its a shame, there is talent there but no one to lead them. Disappointing is an understatement.

Does Morehead have a lot coming back?

They have some good pieces coming back next year. But right now without a coach driving the ship i am guessing they are going to be way behind especially with spring ball starting. It feels like they are dragging it out too long. I know they were not expecting Torain to leave when he did. I havent heard any names who have applied for it. I hope a decision is soon.

I think they knew he was going to leave eventually, he had been applying for other jobs after his first season so I think people knew he wasn't going to be there for the long term

They have a good core of players I feel coming back. The only player of substance they lost was a D linemen and the running back. The kid who played qb got hurt first gam and didn't play the rest of the year, hopefully he gets healthy and can play this season. They need some quality role players to progress but should be better depending on the coach they hire.

Morehead can win. Not saying they are state championship caliber but athletically, they can compete in the current conference. Reidsville is top dog by a wide margin it seems and until something changes everyone is playing for 2nd. MHS has enough talent year in and year out to be in that position. I agree with FormerHScoach though. It depends on who they hire.

Morehead has the talent in the building to win 7+ games a year easily. They need the right leadership to get all of those kids to come out and play, which is the problem at hand.

Agreed. There's no real reason why they aren't competing for 2nd thru 4th spot in that conference every year. Their line has some of the biggest dudes in the conference and they always have speed. The depth #'s just haven't been there. I looked at their roster picture either last year or the year before and my mind was blown at how barren and small it was. With a school it's size they should have at least 30 kids on varsity every year and it barely had 23 or so in it.

Since this search seems to be going no where, besides the names previously mentioned, are there any candidates who you all think could be a good hire or someone the school should reach out to? Maybe an assistant at another school?

Already said multiple times the best guy for the job is in the building. You'd think at some point the admin would start to realize that what has happened so far might be a sign that they should approach this person and just ask if he is interested. He may say no but they might be surprised to learn that they have had the right man all along.

I would think if they approached him now after conducting interviews and offering it to others it would come across as desperate and borderline disrespectful that they didn't approach him when this whole thing began but are now desperate. Just my opinion

Start of spring practice and still no coach. The longer they wait the harder they are making it for this upcoming season. Evidently they have had multiple coaches decline.

Won't disagree. It would be hard on anyone knowing that you weren't the first or even second choice but all things work together for those that love the Lord. There is a reason why it's been declined a couple of times. Maybe a higher power is trying to lead the admin to the right person. If I were this person I might have the Al Davis attitude, "Just win baby." By 1 or 100 a win is a win.

The admin has to be sweating a bit. They know the community is getting restless and they know the kids and the program are going to suffer if they don't act soon. Desperate times call for desperate measures.

Maybe they need to get an assistant to conduct spring practice? Desperate times call for desperate measures.

The baseball coach is doing a fine job. Does he know football?
Not to hard of a job when you have the number one pitcher in the state and take over a winning program. If the football team had the number one QB in the state they probably wouldn't be in the position it is in. Lets see what happens as time goes on.

Great point former coach. Big difference in those sports. One, baseball, relies heavily on individual performances while the other is the ultimate team sport in my opinion. I heard an old baseball coach say one time if you had pitching you could hire a monkey to coach, put him in a uniform and he would win 15 games in high school. Conversely, if you have no pitching, you could resurrect Sparky Anderson and he would struggle to win 10.

To my knowledge the current MHS baseball coach has no football coaching experience. Not even sure he played unless it was when he was in middle school.

You tell us. All the names I've heard have either turned it down or weren't impressive.

Not sure how that's possible in Rockingham County. It's already a 12 month job with a set salary schedule for coaching but nothing shocks me these days.
