nepsy7- Come on, man! Tell us how you can go on the 3A board but we can't come up here. Come on, man. That ain't right. And where is hokiemtc? Is he still trying to get Butler out of the second round?
Oh, there he is with another of his wonderful contributions.
Blue and Gold22- It is no wonder you don't understand our historical perspective when it comes to Shelby Football. It is because you have fallen into the trap of viewing NC football only thru the recent flavor-of-the-month 4A dominance prism. It has been a revolving door of "nationally ranked" programs that hit....and then fade. West Charlotte. Richmond Co. Independence. Butler. And now MC. Butler and MC will fade and then it will be someone else.
We deal in DECADES of dominance. Consistently winning. Sustained winning. Not just one great 7 or 4 or 3 year run that also just occurred this century. You challenge us on TODAY'S schedule, yet scoff at multiple examples of past Shelby schedules that rival the toughest in history. Gaffney, the best and most consistently winning program in SC, won the largest classification state title in 1997. Shelby had just concluded a four year series with Gaffney, held our own, and promptly went to back to back NC state title games AS 2A!!
That is why playing Gaffney in the 90's matters. We have nothing to prove to anyone. 6 of our 11 scheduled games we play up against larger schools. Crest, with 50% more students just won back to back 3A titles. And we played them to within one score each year. 4A MC lost 2 games to 4A schools last year. It takes 6 years for Shelby to lose to two 2A schools. Still don't get it? How convenient to dismiss our challenge for MC to play up a classification or two. Play the universities. Shelby did!
Look it up.
Even Dillon. They have won a lot in the last 10 years or so...about what Shelby has won in the same time period. But what about before then? Very little.
As far as 4A schools bringing "national attention to NC". Who cares? It is a joke and doesn't matter. The Shelby 1972 13-0 Championship team put 5 players on D1 teams as STARTERS, long before USA-TODAY. The only national attention we care about is having the winningest program in NC. Wins, Titles, Title Game appearances, playoff wins, playoff winning %, playoff games, playoff appearances. Shelby is at the top of all those categories over the last 50 years and has been consistently.
Now that is true historical perspective. We would rather have that than just be the flavor of the month.
Wouldn't you?
