That Notre Dame offense might be just what the doctor ordered for that UNC defense.

Bateman ran more 2-gap fronts, whereas Chizik runs a 1-gap scheme. We haven't had adequate personnel up front since Mack took over imo. Still don't. When you're getting blown up at the point of attack, and dropping back into cover 2, or cover 4, you're going to give up some yardage. Which is what you're seeing.
But if you watch the DL, they play too high, which makes it harder for them to get any push. They tap dance instead of getting off the ball with proper footwork to set the edge, spill stuff inside, etc. That's stuff that can be fixed. Would help them get upfield. The defense as a whole would look better imo.

I hope. There has been so many times TN should of won or was the better team but crapped the bed. I will have to see it to believe. Tillman probably isn’t playing. That three and out was costly. Put the defense right back on the field, gave up a FG and ND gets the ball to start the second half.
I just have zero idea what UNC is trying to do on defense. ND has ZERO outside threats and they keep trotting out 5 DBs. They look like middle school kids trying to defend Mayer or the RBs.
Echols picked up the back out of the backfield when he should've had the TE. ND slot ran right past Kelly. That's two on busted coverages.
Same ole, same ole. #9 is the worst safety I've ever seen play college and I wouldn't be shocked if they talk him into coming back next year to use up his covid year of eligibility. The best defensive play by the Heels was the missed field goal.
Maye has to fit his throws into tight windows whereas ND's QB has time to throw it left handed to hit his guys.
Three straight passes on that last three and out tell you there's not a lot of faith in the defense. They know they're going to have to score.
Fantastic 2nd half adjustments. #9 playing 11 yards off on 3rd and 5....misses tackle.....next play the cheerleaders are the closest defender and an easy TD.
They are comically bad. I love the shots of Chizik calling the defense. He looks like he's ordering Door Dash
This is after a couple weeks to prepare. I like Mack, but he's loyal to a fault. We had one of the worst OL I've ever seen last year. But instead of pulling the trigger on Searels, he waited until Searels did what he usually does which is cut and run after a few seasons, fired Bateman instead, and hired Chizik away from the *checks notes* Birgingham Stallions. Thing is we'll end up overhauling the defense again after Mack retires.
As he should be. Can't make that call in the end zone.

Defense needs to at least stop either the run or pass. Bend-but-don't-break isn't going to work giving up 6 ypc and chunk plays through the air. LOL.
