MA @ STARMOUNT - Sat at 7

Bears 🏈 holds on at Starmount 17-14; now 2-0, 6-0; Taeshon Martin 172 yds on 31 carries & TD; Zach Goins w/31 yd TD from Landon Gallimore & Ethan Clabo 27 yd FG; “D” allows 131 total “O” and forces 4 turnovers (Bryson Taylor Int, T.Martin Int, DJ Joyce & Kylan Mason w/FR) host EW next GO 🐻

Couldn't run the ball but Martin had 175 yards rushing. That is more than Starmount had total.
What I meant by not running the ball is not running it very efficiently for high school. Look how many attempts that it took to get that. 41 attempts(total) for 208 yards. He wasn't breaking off those long plays like before.

The reason he had that many opportunities is because of the Starmount game plan on offense. It was a bad plan.

They weren't gonna score or get the first down on that drive without that pass. It was 4th down and long best that I remember. Without that pass they don't win the game.

Starmount only scored on their 1st and last possession of the game. Their quarterback had a lot of yards running for his life from the Bears' defense. I think they passed or tried passing on almost every play because that seems to be their only way of getting any yards. I still say the Bears are 14 to 21 points better without all the flags and TD called back. I hope to see them in Mount Airy in the playoffs if both teams make it that far. Mount Airy has a lot of work to do between now and the playoffs.

I 100% agree with this logic. If Mt Airy had actually scored 14-21 more points than Starmount, they would have definitely won by more points.

You know something? Mt Airy only scored in the first half 🤷🤦 Do you see any logic in what you posted? You know what else. Mt Airy is holding on the majority of their plays. They've did this for many years against very good teams and aren't called for it near as much as they should. What does that tell you? Yeah that's right, they're getting beat.

BS starmount held #22 all night. Never called.

It tells me you are criticizing the refs because they didn’t see it the way you did. I guess you also think they held their way to two state championships the llast two years.

lol, Starmount had a 1st and goal at the Bears 2-yard line I believe, in the 3rd Qtr, and the Bears pushed them back to the 4 or 6-yard line with them having 4 downs to put it in from the 2 yd. line and then the Bears took over because the Rams could not put it in. Bears won so stop crying, no one picked Starmount to win but maybe you. Move on is the best we can do !

I don't think you were at the game. Starmount was at about the half yard line and had an illegal procedure that backed them up. The QB stumbled into the back of the center by accident resulting in the flag.

I'm not criticizing the refs. It is what it is. Nor am I saying that Starmount didn't hold some. Mt Airy has a long history of this in competitive games. Everyone knows it. My criticism is with a few that thinks that just because you score a touchdown on a penalty that that makes you "14-21 points better". It's comical and nonsense. This is the exact same thing that was said about the Mitchell game 3-4 years ago.

I'm not saying that Starmount didn't hold a player like 22 some. Like I said players hold when they get beat. That does not negate the fact that the holding was almost entirely done by Mt Airy.

I'm not even saying it's a bad thing to hold. Sometimes you just have to do it especially to protect your QB. If you can get by with it I say do it but don't be surprised or complain when you're flagged and then most definitely don't then turn around and say that this somehow makes the team 2-3 tds better than what they are as if the penalized run should've counted someway or another. That's my complaint

Starmount is real deal but MA was clearly better team even with all the mistakes on offense. MA has that championship mentality and they just wear you down.
I respect your opinion as a fan of Mt Airy. Tough defensive pressure makes many offenses make mistakes. I don't think either team got to do what they wanted to on offense because of it and have room for improvement. I agree with you about the championship mentality and that's something they've earned.

This is why I expected MA to win. This is not the first time they have been in a big game. The goal line stand/illegal procedure series of events was proof of that. One team executed and the other tripped up when it mattered most.

When Starmount scored on the first play of the game and I looked over at Mt Airy it was as if it never happened. Laser focus. No panic anywhere.

MA also had poor time management to end the first half close to the goal line. Let too much time run off at the 1 minute mark. This will be something both teams can work on for the playoffs. Really good teams punch it in inside the ten. Maybe work on a big package wildcat.

100%. I imagine both staffs will make adjustments and be better off after weaknesses were exposed.

About that. I didn't have a good view of what happened as I was on the other endzone side of the stands. But did the refs rule the player down inbounds at the end there, thus the ill advised rush to kick a field goal with like 10 seconds and running clock. I thought the catch was made and knocked out of bounds. If it was incomplete then clock stops, so had to be ruled down in bounds. Didn't make sense what happened there.

My philosophy about posting on here is, and always has been, never put down another teams' players, another team or another school. This post is not about another teams' player, their team or another school. It is about "my" team.

Mt Airy won last night. That is it. We won. And for that, yes, we are happy, I am happy. But I am more relieved than happy.

What I see, and said after the Wythe High School scrimmages at the first of the season and after the second game, is:
1. Mt Airy does not have a head coach. We have a caretaker. In every crucial situation this season he has not been at the fore front.
OMG do we miss JK Adkins!!!

2. Mt Airy is not quite as talented as last year, but we are talented enough to win the State Championship, if, and only if, we use that talent correctly. We did not last night, and have not all season. It was just not glaring until last night.
QB play is good 1 play out of 10, maybe. Decent in 3 out of 10, and horrible the rest of the time.
There is a really good QB on the team. He obviously is not being used in that capacity and, in my opinion, being wasted at a receiver position and being used only as a decoy.

3. Mt Airy has 5 really talented offensive players (beside Taeshon Martin) that are not being utilized in any significant way. The end result of this is two fold: to over work the one great talent (in addition to the other 5) that is being used and over working him to the point of reducing his effectiveness and exposing him to needless injury. This allows the other team to concentrate their defense on stopping him and ignore the others. Last night the majority of the night, Starmount had 9 or 10 players lined up, in the box, to stop "one" Mt Airy player!

4. Mt Airy has all but thrown out the "option" and gone to a one back set. Why? Not because we do not have the running backs, but apparently because the QB can not run the option. But their is another QB option that could run it to perfection and has in previous years.
The conclusion that comes to mine is that playing that one person in that one position is more important than preparing the team to win the State Championship a third straight time.

5. Defense is carrying the team. Totally. Full Stop. (Or the Mt Airy team just plain and simply has so much more talent than the other team).

6. Discipline (or rather the lack of it) killed, I would guess, nearly half of the offensive drives last night. The same player committed the same flag offense two plays in a row. No taking him out of the game. No verbal coaching instruction that could be seen.
Sometimes their were as many as 3 offensive plays in a row with some type of flag either during the play or after the play. One time we had a flag killing a great play and then another Dead Ball Flag. Talk about destroying field position!
Discipline is obviously not something that is on anybody's mind.

7. Conditioning is also a problem. Cramps all over the place last night. It was not a hot night temperature wise and this was the 6th week of the season.

People, if the other team is just plain and simply better than we are, we get beat. OK that is life. No big deal. BUT, with no unkindness intended to Starmount, Mt Airy was 3 to 4 touchdowns better. After the first offensive play of the game, Starmount achieved ONE, yes 1, first down until the last quarter, when Mt Airy went to a prevent defense, which just played into a talented Starmounts' hands.

If Mt Airy wants to win, or even have a chance to play for a State Championship, somebody or several somebodies on the Coaching Staff better have a real hard look in the mirror and decide what adjustments need to be made. Now is the time to make those adjustments, with Mt Airy entering the easiest part of the regular season.
I’ve been busy for sometime and with everything going on in the real world I haven’t been reading the gossip on these boards. I hope your name isn’t actually Whitley. It’s awful bold of somebody to post their name out there and then absolutely drag somebody’s name through the mud that is in their 6th or 7th real week on the job. From my perspective as a wilkes county football fan who doesn’t really know a ton about Mount airy. 1. I was told your previous HC would be the OC…. If your offense is struggling which they are from what I seen against EW wouldn’t the OC/prior HC be to blame ? The defense held starmount to 7 points most the night until the offense died in the second half against starmount can you ask for much better defense ? Starmount has scored 50 on everybody. Mount airy doesn’t have another QB on its roster the kid you recruited from forbush played WR mostly for forbush but ran the football from the QB and RB position. Y’all guys wanted JK fired for his first 4 or 5 seasons and now you’re about to fire one of your own. Mount airy fans are the worst I think I’m gonna go back to being a Mount airy hater. So much for loyalty to your school and the people of your school. I’ll just become a EW fan sense at the least they stand behind their guy.

Well spoken sir

You take away the penalty's at Starmount and MA scores at least 14 more points and East Wilkes you score prob 14 more. Clean this up and offense little more reliable. Would like to see #2 Gallimore believe in himself at QB bc he has the talent. Just take a deep breath every play and just play football. Stop putting all the pressure on himself and just get it done. I know he can be great!

The game was 17-14. Penalties, turnovers, mistakes are part of the game. Seems like penalties are being problems for the Bears.

I could list if Starmount had did this and that we could have 2 or 3 more touchdowns but I’m not going down the “what if” rabbit hole.

Starmount had the ball on the 2 and couldnt punch it in! MA give Stm plenty of opportunities.

Starmount center didn't snap the ball creating the illegal procedure. They score there the game is over. Without the penalties Mt Airy wouldn't have "scored" the touchdowns. The touchdown they scored on the pass was supposed to be defended by a different player but he was out of the play sick

MA scored on the int but was called back on a block in back at the 50 after #4 had already went past and same with long play to #1 #70 Holding after #1 had already past. Both were not necessary for the plays to be successful. MA prob gets FG before end of half if refs makes right call on wr being out of bounds. MA doesnt go into preventive D Stm doesn't score at end of game. MA got W in Rams house enough said!
