Jefferson Boaz - someone please explain to me why he’s not

The young man is good but Boaz is incredible raw with not so great mechanics.
This is pretty much it, along with him playing 1A ball and not really being a full time QB until this year.

He has a lot to work on as far as his footwork and throwing mechanics go to be a successful D1 QB but the raw tools are there if he puts in the work. You can't teach 6'7 with functional mobility and a good arm.

If he goes to Carolina he'll redshirt and they'll work with him on his deficiencies, he'll sit behind Howell at least two years either way and if he's progressed enough he'll get a shot to win the QB job and if not they'll move him to TE or OT (or he'll transfer out to some place willing to give him a chance at QB if he's dead set on playing QB).

One thing overlooked here. He’s really good. His oline never let him see much pressure. He had all day. Great team period

Let’s give a lot of credit to that offensive line also for-the great protection and that’s some great receivers who knew their routes and didn’t drop any passes. Impressive for HS players. I guess you could say it was a total team effort

Tremendous effort by OL and he’s definitely got a special group of wr’s. Tarboro made a fatal mistake staying in zone and not at least trying use some different blitz packages to get some hits on him and maybe throw off some timing a bit.

I would guess it is partly because he split reps until this year, plus maybe some bias against 1A competition. But he was incredible. The talk about “watch out Sam Howell “ is a bit much—but I think Boaz is going to have some hard decisions to make about his future. Howell is a star and there is a 4 star QB recruit from Arkansas coming in the same class as Boaz. As much as I want to see him as a Tar Heel, I wonder if it isn’t in his best interest to open things back up.

me and some UNC fans spoke about this last night. He’s needs to go somewhere where the depth chart is better at QB. Clemson, UGA even have better depth charts.

You are a Tennessee fan. You taking Boaz or Harrison Bailey who just 22-31 276 yards in the 7a championship game in Georgia against Lowndes who was ranked national top 10. Boaz is really good but there are QBs all across the Country that are good you never hear much about.

I keep up with recruiting avidly so I know most of the top QBs and Boaz can play with any of them imo, including Bailey. And he has more upside. Bailey obviously played against a tougher foe and one that’s seen passing attacks, but there is no denying what Boaz has done and the talent he is.

UNC has Sam Howell, Jace Ruder (who has been hurt every year), and walk-ons Vincent Amendola and Brewington.

Jacolby Criswell is a QB from Arkansas that is a UNC commit.

As with UNC this year, you can never have too much depth especially at QB. You are one snap from being a starter.

Boaz can play multiple positions so I’m sure he will do what’s best for him. He absolutely loves Coach Brown.

I saw on 247 somebody predicting him to flip to Arkansas.

I was blasted when I questioned Chazz Surratt's potential as a big time college QB. He was a national player of the year. His coach had produced another QB with big time numbers and no college success although not the overall player Surratt was. East Licoln had two big BCS receivers, very good OL, and great coaching. It worked out for Chazz but not at QB. (HUGE respect for him!)

I have been lucky enough to see almost every top QB from the state and watched several of them with some guys who are very special at coaching QB and evaluating them. The things they pick up make you scratch your head but when you get to the Power 5 level the smallest issues become magnified.

No idea how good Boaz is. I have not seen him play. I can tell you that last night he went against a very athletic team of good footballers that is well coached but it is a team that does not see hardly any passing offenses that can light it up. ES has D1 receivers with a very good OL. That makes it much easier to look great. I expect the receivers were getting open and he was just picking them apart.

He may be great but do not determine his college prospects based on this game or season. He will get a chance to play the position and he will know. There is a good possibility that his best chance for long term success is at O Tackle. There is a reason those guys get huge contracts in the NFL. Then again may be he does have that skill set. Regardless of his future he lived a dream last night and he is going to play college football on scholarship at the school he has pulled for all his life. Sounds like a pretty good deal to me.

Chazz had the benefit of throwing to his brother. It made him look better than he actually was. Good linebacker though.

I’m not a Professional football analyst or scout so I can’t say but Boaz look great to me. He is not getting much love on here. Is it because he plays 1A ? Is it jealousy ? I don’t recall people judging Heath Schuler back in the day ! He had a running game. He played in 1A SMC and went on and had a great career at Tennessee. The biggest night in this young mans career and people are speculating on his future the next day.

Has Boaz signed his loi? If not he could decommit and go somewhere to play qb. UNC doesn't have a decent backup for Howell. With the new redshirt rules he could go that route and look to take over his junior year at Carolina. He looked much improved from last year's championship game, it's obvious he's worked hard. However, Sam Howell will be the starting qb at UNC for at least 2 more years.

He’s getting plenty of love we’re just discussing him playing QB at the next level. He’s an elite athlete with elite size but he’s likely headed to TE. There’s nothing wrong with that, Brewer is one of the best ever at developing NFL caliber TE’s.

Don't forget Cameron Dollar. He was physical and long! Could really play. He averaged 15 yards on 40 catches for UNCC this past season as a redshirt sophomore.

Early signing date is not until Wednesday.

UNC does not have a decent backup? I disagree. Go watch a practice and tell me Jace Ruder is not decent. Impressive dual threat. To move him out of that position the next guy better be really good and very advanced.

Ruder can't stay healthy.... I wouldn't call him decent if he can't play.

Criswell is a Elite 11 QB and a Early Enrollee. If Boaz is not a EE Criswell will have a leg up. I don’t know if anybody has seen Criswell highlights but he looks good.

I have to agree with some other posters here. East Surry had one hell of an offensive line. Tarboro has a phenomenal defense and the ES offensive line put them in check. Boaz is a hell of a specimen but his mechanics and footwork need to develop and his release isn't as quick as it needs to be at the next level. He made some great throws this season but it's easy to make decisions when you have 5 seconds to go through your reads every play with above average weapons. Any average QB with a decent arm can look incredible with that kind of time. The oline was the big takeaway for me about the east Surry team. I didnt recall anyone in the threads harping on how great they were. It was a big surprise to me when I went back and watched the game. They deserve more credit imo for the season the cardinals had.

Really don’t see the Clemson recruiting falling off enough for that to be the case. They basically get almost any player they want right now.
As a UNC fan and alum, I hope that we reach a point where we can compete with Clemson in recruiting every year, especially in North Carolina. We’re not there yet, but we’re closing.

It is crazy. Like Alabama a few years ago and to some extent now and USC ten years ago. Clemson is slow playing national top 50 players!

I will just be happy if we don’t lose N.C. kids to them any more, especially from Charlotte west

He is the best 1A quarterback since Heath Shuler.
Boaz in my opinion is way more talented throwing the football than Shuler was.plus Boaz has the size . A 6 foot 7 QB that's stands in the pocket without any fear is hard to find.
Another thing Boaz lit up what was one of the best defences in the state .His quick release and accurately throwing the ball with different arm angles is what impressed me the most
. I saw Shuler play a couple times when he was in highschool and was not that impressed . One if the games was at Mitchell and I believe he put up less than 20 points that game. Just my opinion .

Today is the day! We'll see what unfolds.

I don't recall people saying Tarboro had a shutdown pass defense. They were lights out on run defense though. That game for Boaz couldn't have been more opportune for his stock. I feel like some of the others here in that he needs to work on his release. It did look slow, but that was on tv. Maybe he's faster when you watch him live.

The young man is good but how quickly we forget the likes of Chris Leak who had big time coaching in Tommy Knotts and much harder competition. Boaz is incredible raw with not so great mechanics. Leak was polished.

You can list who you want but it doesn't change my statement or make me wrong. Reading comprehension is a lost art.

The ES O Line was phenomenal all season. Everyone all year has found that getting to Boaz was easier said than done. Ask Reidsville who also had a very good, athletic and state ranked defense how hard of a time they had. Both teams threw every thing they had at them with the blitz and stunts and ES stopped them both in their tracks. I saw a newspaper article that they had only given up 6 sacks the entire season. That’s unreal! The skill guys got all the press and attention to the casual fan and rightfully so with their numbers and offers. I think that is why you never heard anything about their OL. This team was a perfect storm of very gifted receivers and a QB with a rifle for a arm, coupled with one of the top offensive lines in the state 1A-4A. Giving an elite QB that much time with the weapons Boaz had spells doom for any defense. The way they dismantled Tarboro was unbelievable. I’m still somewhat is shock that I just saw what I saw last Saturday.

The OL was great all year. Boaz was great all year as well as his WR if it was catchable they didn't drop it! Boaz was lucky to have such a great bunch of WR and the WR were lucky to have a great QB it was a perfect storm!

Just saw a clip of Mack Brown talking about Boaz. Bottom line: Brown said Boaz would get a shot at QB. He quoted Boaz's stats and had video of Jefferson. He mentioned Boaz's father playing for him. He mentioned other positions. He even mentioned Boaz had very good speed for this size. I thought I heard something about him playing on Sunday.

On the 1A level, having 3 D1 caliber wr's would make a lot of qbs look good.

He deserves a chance. If he's good enough, he'll make it at the position. If not, he's gifted enough to succeed at another position.
