It was very fitting, on Memorial Day, that fans at Craven Stadium would be treated to a great, great American Legion game.

Foothills, in the top of the tenth, scored four runs to break open a 2-2 game. The offensive play of the game was delivered by Carson Willoughby. (Willoughby also scored the game-tying run in the sixth after he mashed a triple).

With a runner on, the lefty stepped to the plate and smashed one the opposite way to left. The ER left fielder was playing real shallow and completely got torched. One run easily scored. ER tried to throw Willoughby out at third but the ball got past the third baseman. As a result, Willoughby was able to stroll home with an inside-the-park HR. After that, it seemed like every Foothills batter decided to turn into Barry Bonds. They started mashing the baseball and scored two more runs as a result. Going into the bottom of the tenth, Foothills held a 6-2 lead.

Believe it or not, ER had a chance to tie or win this game. Down 6-3, ER suddenly got hot at the plate and loaded the bases. With two outs, Brody Gardner came to the dish and smashed a hard line drive to right. However, the Foothills right fielder charged it, stretched out his glove arm, and snatched it out of the air to end the game. Outstanding play from both lads.

There were some awesome catches in this contest. Luke Thomas made a great grab in center field somewhere around the third inning. Late in the game, the Foothills catcher made an amazing backwards diving catch off a foul bunt.

Another tough loss for Post 81. They had a 2-1 lead for the longest time. Maybe they'll get over the hump against Uwharrie tomorrow.
