Edenton Holmes vs Reidsville Title Game

the tragic part in all this: for as dominant as Reidsville has been....where are the D1 players?....the payoff where it really matters in life? According to the Rivals recruiting database, Reidsville has 0 D1 prospects in the 2017 class. One kid listed in the 2018 class (with no actual offers listed) and also none is last years class....and there was one, J Rankin in the 2015 class....for all that talent, all the wins....where are the prospects? By contrast Shelby has 1 kid committed to ECU this year, and 2 other kids in the database. and they have a Junior Linebacker who is currently listed at the #100 player IN THE NATION for the 2018 class, and he's #2 in the nation in his position....with offers already from 10 D1 schools.

D1 is not that big of a deal as long as they can get a free ride somewhere and get their education. To be honest there is not a ton of D1 players walking the halls of Reidsville but a lot of D2's that can play and are playing at that level as of now. Give me 4 D2's against your 1 D1 and I'll give you a state championship.

Reidsville has several kids that are being recruited this year by D2 and NAIA schools...hopefully as many as 5 or 6 will get scholarships this year

You mean all those 5'11 200lb offensive and defensive linemen Reidsville has had over the years didnt get recruited by Alabama?

Size matters to recruiters. As do grades. And motivation to play at the next level. And going to camps to be seen by recruiters.

Yeah this team will have several players playing on the next level. Teams are getting steals too

I'm sure most of the kids on Reidsville are good kids but I also know from a cousin that lives there that several have been suspended this year for disciplinary problems in school.

Tell your cousin that he is a liar. This years team has not had anyone to be suspended. If I'm wrong I'm sure that my fellow posters can correct me.

I hope your cousin didn't try to sell you beach front property in Iowa during the same conversation.

That's a lie...no kids have been suspended...and I hope you realize that Reidsville high school won the county award for overall team sportsmanship and that covers all sports...now back to football

This group of young men are some of the highest character players I've ever had the privilege of knowing. There are more than 10 players with 4.0+ GPAs. There are countless others on the AB Honor roll. A bunch are in the IB program. There are kids on this team that have been contacted about playing at Ivy League schools, Duke and Davidson.
I won't sit idly by and have people on this board or anyone else attack any single one of them. It pisses me off to be very honest.
There have been others over the last four years that have dropped off this team for different reasons. Ive had contact with several of them and they kick themselves for not keeping up with the standards this team has set. If you don't have any clue what you're talking about, keep quiet

Someone said maybe northeastern should be playing in this game maybe so but at the end of the day EDENTON come here and beat us they should be playing and will win Saturday good luck both teams

You are correct. We are for the most part, past, present and future undersized for D1. As far as camp, it is not free!!! A lot of these kids cannot afford to go to camp, week in and week out. You are not going to get ranked if you are not at a prospect camp. So D2 works out. They get themselves educated and have an opportunity to continue playing. Everyone in my building has a degree of some kind. Half are not from D1 schools. It's the sheep skin that matters in the end.

i would love for that to be the case. In that area....any help they can get with an education is like gold. I'm sure plenty of kids play high school football for the love....but if you asked every kid on the roster, if they would like to play college football, just about every one would say a resounding "hell yes!"

The linebacker from Shelby is about 6'1 about 230. He past the eye test. Reidsville kids are talented but non pass the eye test in height weight and build. But they do have a lot of smart talented kids the will play D2 or naia on the team like it was said early. Yes J Rankin had 2 FCS athletic offers(Gardner Webb and NC Central) 2 FBS preferred Walk on offers to Carolina and App. because of his height and size ( 5'11 and 195 his senior year). He decided that playing at D2 WSSU would be his best option and the way things are going for him right now it looks to be his best decision. And yes he had the grades to go D1 3.4 gpa. I say this because having a great season with great stats don't make you a D1 player. Most kids and their parents act like D1 is the only thing out there. That's the very same mind set that's hurting a lot of kids. If you are a true D1 player you will know by your junior year. If you are small or are a late bloomer they may offer you a preferred walk on.

Is Time Warner Cable available in the eastern part of the state?
As far as watching online, not sure, but I think you have to have a subscription to pull up their content.
Yes in some part of the state in the east even northeastern NC.

Some Aces Football History:

Edenton High School was officially named John A. Holmes High School in the summer of 1959 after the former Superintendent.

Edenton is the only school in the state to use the mascot "Aces". Rumor is the team was named the "Aces" in honor of the pilots at the Marine air base built in Edenton during WWII.

Some Aces football history from way back:

Edenton's first State Championship came in 1934 as Edenton defeated Reidsville 6 to 0 for the North Carolina Class B State Championship.

The Team went 10-0-0.
None of Edenton's opponents that year scored a single point.
No team penetrated inside Edenton's 16 yard line.
Edenton scored 236 points during the season and gave up 0
10 straight shutouts
Edenton had 100 first downs while opponents had only 26
Edenton scored 37 touchdowns and 14 extra points.
Edenton actually beat Chowan College during regular season
Edenton's 84 points against Hertford still stands as the largest margin of victory ever recorded
Henry House was the Head Coach who had starred at fullback for UNC in 1928,1929,and 1930
Frank Holmes was the Manager
Edmund Forehand was the Assistant Manager
Dick Goodwin was the Trainer

Players included:

Worth Spencer - Captain

12 Roanoke Rapids 0
44 Greenville 0

84 Hertford 0
7 New Bern 0
13 Garner 0
6 Reidsville 0

This team is considered the #1 football team in Edenton Aces History and is listed in the NCHSAA record book for consecutive shutout.

What a crazy mindset MikeD? There's so much BS in your original post I don't even know where to start.....

Generally speaking, a vast majority will play their last high school football game this weekend. Many of those playing in their last football game all together. They should enjoy that first and foremost and worry about what's next, whether that include football or not when the time comes. D1, D2, D3.....ask anybody who's played at any of those levels and they'll tell you that their biggest take away was the relationships and friendships that last a lifetime, not whether they were a 4* or 5* recruit.

What was the team's mascot before WWII ... or when they had that great season in 1934?

In the 1930s, Edenton was the Emerald Tide.
Wow another great bit of history. Did they use "Roll Tide!"

Also, I went back to the book on Reidsville football history ... that 6-0 championship game in 1934 was Reidsville's only loss in a 7-1-2 season. The Golden Lions (Reidsville's mascot before Rams and after Golden Tornadoes) had 0-0 ties with Greensboro and High Point but beat Roxboro, Hillsboro, Burlington, Mebane, Spencer, Thomasville and Mount Airy before running into the Emerald Tide.

Hap Perry, who later became the director of the NCHSAA, was Reidsville's coach from 1927 to 1945.

I think Kenzel was the last d1 guy. But he didn't get it right outta hs if that counts
Kenzel, who had a tryout with the Steelers, just completed an outstanding first season as a kick returner for the Edmonton Eskimos of the Canadian Football League. He had 1,374 yards returning kickoffs and punts.
Before Kenzel it was probably Na Brown, who was a top receiver at Carolina and then played for the Eagles.
Our friends from Edenton might remember the QB and linebacker from Elizabeth City State a couple years back. Tyrell Houghton was the QB and Steve Williams was the star linebacker. They - along with Kenzel Doe - were key pieces during Reidsville's three straight undefeated seasons 2007-2008-2009.

Yep, thanks for the correction ... ... Chestnut, who played at Duke, was one of four standout receivers on the 2002 and 2003 state championship teams that also included Jerome Simpson.
Isaiah Robinson was after Na Brown and before Raphael Chestnut. Tremendous receivers all.

2009 last state championship team:
Kenzel Doe --Wisconsin
Lyshod Graves-- Old Dominion
Division II
Tyrell Houghton--Elizabeth city state university
Steve Williams--Elizabeth city state university
Byron Lynn---North Carolina Wesleyan

And ej foster didn't play football but graduated from North Carolina A&t university
That was a great senior class!!
