CVAC 2024 - Week 12 🐻🐺🏆

comments on why game was a blowout? I don’t think any team put more points on another in this conference in a long time unless I missed something

It's not as hard to do as it sounds. We beat burke 43 to 6 could have been any One play during the game to make it the same score as bandy's. It really comes more down to how they did it. If they still scored while running the ball then so be it if they were padding the score with bomb passes then you know it could be a little bit more of an asshole thing to do.

Sometimes it just is what it is. I remember North Lincoln's first season I believe we beat them 82-0 and honestly I couldn't tell you anything we could have done more reasonably besides taking knees and punting. After the first quarter Maiden took out every starter at halftime I believe we played only kids that never play. And Coach Brown from my understanding went to North Lincoln's coach and told him he was only going to run the same play the rest of the game up the Middle run. But we kept scoring then before the third quarter was over with they put JV players in. Still the same play over and over but we still kept scoring. So like I said sometimes it is what it is

Your recounting of how Maiden handled the situation shows a level of sportsmanship that’s commendable. Taking out starters and trying to avoid running up the score is a great way to demonstrate respect for the opposing team.

In many sports, we see instances where teams are mismatched, and it often raises ethical questions about how to manage those games. For example, in youth sports, coaches are often encouraged to prioritize player development and sportsmanship over competition, which mirrors the approach Coach Brown took by running the same play repeatedly. This can help maintain the spirit of the game while still allowing players to gain experience.

By the way, are there better ways to ensure that teams like North Lincoln can improve and compete more effectively in the future?

Honestly it was their first year they probably shouldn't have been playing varsity football probably should have been a JV year only. But I credit them for having the courage and fortitude to do it. This is been a while back so can't remember every detail but I don't think they had the 40 point mercy rule back then so that rule really helps keeping something like that from happening. But to be honest also for a player who doesn't get to play very much or JV kid I can't fault them for wanting to score in a game.

Wow 82 to zip. Sure it wasn’t Highland Tech and Cherryville kids just borrowing their uniforms lol.
Only score I heard of that was worse than that is AL Brown 97-0 on Northwest Cabbarrus back in 1998. Nick Maddox was talk of the town FFN feature RB playing in that game for AL Brown. He got on Panthers practice squad but that was as far as he went.

I think when highland tech was in our conference they forfeited every year if I'm remembering correctly

Speaking of NL, this may be the hottest season they’ve ever had as a 3A and maybe 2nd or 3rd best team overall. Still waiting on the 3A seeding and brackets. Looks like Erwin is the team to beat this year around here other than obviously Hickory. People said Statesville was alittle down but ehhhh if you saw the size of their boys in the trenches good grief. They were college Soph/Jr size boys kid you not. People didn’t think North had a chance and that Hickory would be in a real battle if you seen em walk out on the field lol.

Thats my next door neighbor conference spill. I guess the other neighbor one next door is Watauga will dominate til 3rd round at least and Freedom much improved. South Caldwell still blah

North beating Statesville off the snaps most of the downs saved them. And no fumbles. Quick and strong I guess can prevail if you know what you’re doing lol. If they played again Statesville prob take em’. Might even go 3rd round and have a Hickory rematch

Playing against more experienced teams can be daunting, and it can certainly be a learning experience that builds resilience.

The point about the 40-point mercy rule is particularly relevant. It’s designed to protect teams that may be at a disadvantage, allowing them to avoid overly demoralizing losses. This rule not only helps in maintaining competitive balance but also ensures that players who don’t get much playing time still have the chance to contribute in a meaningful way, without the game spiraling out of control.

For example, in youth sports, we often see teams with varying levels of experience. A JV team moving up to varsity can benefit from the exposure, but it can also be a tough transition. The experience gained in such challenging games can be invaluable for their development, even if it means taking some lumps initially.

Assuming they accept their playoff bid this year, yeah?

Yeah i don't think anyone knew how good East Rutherford was gonna be at the time. We knew they were good but not that good.. they are my sleeper this year to surprise some teams in the playoffs

Bonus picks y’all, make it happen. And let’s celebrate too guys, Wenesday morning, we ALL won.

Good bonus pick for the first round. Freedom vs whoever they play. Prob be an even match. East Lincoln vs whoever that be good pick. Statesville, North, Hickory, they be cruising on their first round

I saw how good they was on YouTube when they played NL. Pull it up anyone that wants to. Heart attack game. One heck of a WR and a QB with an arm. Bout all you need to get at North long as you got time to throw. North does have that front D but suspect in 2ndary

I think at this point they could try to lose on purpose and there wouldn’t be enough time to let them come back even trying hard to do so.

Losing that class last year and coach this year has hurt them beyond belief.
A lot of in fussing among their on players from what I have heard and seen might not be a great job to have at EB. Realignment might help the program they need a weaker conference for sure!!

That sounds good. Give them milk and cookies and tell them they can get better. Milk and cookies has been "all the vogue" this week.
Tell them to "shake it off, and get your butts to work." Kids playing competitive sports must expect it to be competitive. They don't need to be molly coddled. If you get beat, maybe the taste of defeat will make you aspire to develop your skills. Sportsmanship is learned and exhibited, both in defeat and victory. To much "give them all a trophy" has already gave us bunch of wimps.

Agree. Way too much of that. Man I was checking off and on all day for the brackets. They’ll be up prob after Panthers play, which will be in Europe. I ain’t missing church over that. 3 A and I think 4A isn’t up either

Very possible, but they made 3 last year and with pretty much all starters on both sides of the ball returning. We as fans of the game we understand the whole next year man next year ordeal, but this is North’s year to do something whatever they be able to pull off and do. (In my Trump voice) “ Be a EUGE rebuilding year, for them next year, be a time to MAEK things happen for themselves they won’t be a next year, no (draw lips back) gotta be this year” - That’d be what orange man would say about it LOL.

Last year was East Burkes year to make something happen, kinda expected this this year but didn’t wanna believe it. For Hickory it was 96’ or bust and they certainly busted the other teams. But didn’t have much behind that class. Now, seems like they won’t let off steam til prob 3 or 4 years or longer.

Yes Absolutely. When children face challenges and setbacks in sports, it teaches them resilience and determination. Instead of shielding them from failure, we should encourage them to embrace it as a learning opportunity.

And as we all know, many successful athletes speak about how losses motivated them to train harder and improve their skills. For example, Michael Jordan, who we all know as one of the greatest basketball players of all time, famously said, “I’ve missed more than 9,000 shots in my career. I’ve lost almost 300 games. Twenty-six times, I’ve been trusted to take the game-winning shot and missed. I’ve failed over and over and over again in my life. And that is why I’ve succeeded.” This mindset fosters a growth-oriented approach, which can be applied not just in sports but in various aspects of life.

So this little trend some people or organization foster of giving participation trophies can dilute the value of hard work and achievement. It’s important for kids to understand that effort deserves recognition, but so does excellence. By promoting a culture that values both participation and achievement, we can better prepare them for the realities they will face in adulthood.
