CVAC 2022 - Week 5

That northern money moving down and taking over Sherrills Ford Rd...money bends culture.

I grew up on Molly's Backbone, went to SF elementary, played at SFO under the Sigmon brothers back when they had us practice behind Howard's Furniture.

My whole family went to Bandys except for my brother and I...momma remarried and we moved to Maiden...but I still care about Bandys a lot.
A lot has changed for sure.

Is that the same Howard's Furniture on 150 or are there multiple locations? Which brings me to famed Howard's Furniture/Western Steer softball teams. I believe very few teams wanted that smoke.

Yes sir, the very same. This was the mid 90s when we practiced there. Lights still worked so we could practice at night

Was Braun Strowman on the team? I am from the Shane Burton era. Glad he was not around to bolster those SFO teams. Bandys and Foard were always my favorite places to play back when the youth conference was called the Southland (I think).

Howard’s, Poindexter, Piedmont Sheet Metal. Good old days of softball. Saw Howard’s beat Piedmont 59-58 in a tournament in Burlington. Felt like I was at an ACC basketball game. Red dot softballs and steroids made for a potent combination😊.

Adam is 4 years ahead of me I think. I played at the same time as Matt Woodlief and Byron Sigmon.

I’ll take the Max Preps Top ranked CVAC team…..the Johnnys at home.😜 For old times sake…I’ll say Bandys keeps it closer than North Lincoln did….and I’ll also say that Bandys will not stay down for long…y’all can bank on that!😉

I’m taking the Bears at home by 1. I’d go the other way if it was at Lincolnton. That’s how close I think this game will be. It’s gonna be great one!

I’ll take Maiden….but I’m betting those East Burke boys are riding high over that Draughn win. The Boom Devils better be ready.

I’ve got West Caldwell winning a game…..but not this one. 😜 I’ll take Newton in a closer than most think game.

You say it every week Creek about WC...what games left they supposed to win???

I'm guessing Bandys 🤔

Is that game coming in basketball season 😂

Bandys teams, steaming back to the "good" Lowman years, have always been penalized like crazy. I'm not sure it is a coaching/player issue as much as it is a community issue. I say this because 1) I played at Bandys 2) have been a season ticket holder for the past 30 years as well. To say the fans are ruthless would be an understatement. I've heard things that NO one should ever hear from the mouths of fans directed toward referees and coaches throughout the year. I actually know a ref that said, "Bandys fans are the worst fans around." He went on to say that a lot of the officials hated coming to Bandys and most were aware of the abuse from fans. I'm not saying they penalized Bandys purposely, but I'm not saying that either. Some of the coaches can be contributors as well because of their antics on the sideline. I think a combination of coaches/players/community contribute to penalties for the Trojans. Last thin, coaches are at the mercy of talent that comes through the programs. If you have paid attention to the Bandys area, not a ton of talent coming through at all. I'm not sure what the problem but I think you can look at the youth programs that used to flourish individually, and now struggle to get enough combined. There used to be coaches/parents at Balls Creek and Sherrills Ford areas that had a lot of pride and made football a priority for the youth. Now, a lot of the true locals are older, their kids are not living in the area to continue the traditions, and the influx of people moving into the area with their own views (soccer, lacross, etc.) have seriously deflated the sports programs (girls included) at Bandys. To cast blame on coaches, etc. is the easy thing to do, but I think that is unfair as they are trying to call a game based on the talent they are given. Easier to say a coach is great when they have the talent to do mutliple things. Just my 2 cents. Best of luck to everyone, including the Trojans.

I remember being at bandys watching maiden in woodlief senior year. He scored putting bandys up and everyone thought game was over including him. Then Petey got the ball and zig zaged through the whole bandys defense and scored the game winning TD. Last thing I saw was Matt woodlief fall to his knees in disbelief 😂

That was a great game. Two years prior to that I stood in awe while I watched our QB Spake toss the ball up in the air when the clock hit zero like it was a basketball game. For a second I thought Bandys was gonna scoop and score to win the game. Luckily we recovered and my heart fell back into my chest.

I was on the field during that play...my legs couldn't move fast enough to try an run that ball down...luckily no harm was done.

Seems like every time I get to feeling good about the Wolves chances Something happens to dampen things. I read in the Hobbs Report about the Bears win over North Iredell by a score of 27-20. I saw some stats on that game and didn't notice anything for #5 which tells me they either missed reporting his yardage or more likely he did not play, last week. Haven't heard about this week.

What stood out to me more than anything is the BH quarterback throwing for 350 yards against North. This tells me they have a healthy passing game and that they aren't afraid to throw and they do it often. For some reason I had BH pictured as a running team, probably since we struggled with it, here, last year. In my opinion the Bears were a little better than us in 2021. If they run well and are able to pass well, it's a pick your poison for us. Just hope we can defend against both.

Something else I saw and didn't know, Bobby Mclaughlin, former Lincolnton quarterback and assistant coach is currently an offensive coach at Bunker Hill. Bobby has a really good head for football. As head coach at Southlake Christian he won the state with them. Also, there are a few things the Wolves do differently than most which he is familiar with...…Well hell.

I use to watch some of the Bandys games back in the 90’s. Especially when they were good. I use to live off on Bolton Rd not far from Sherrill Foard Rd at the time. I watched some classic football in that conference. Never will forget Shelby coming to Bandys in 4th rd of 2A playoffs back in ‘97.

The rumor is number 52 was ejected for Bunker. The big question for the Lincolnton game is whether #5 is playing for Bunker this week.
Not sure but if #5 is the starting RB from beginning of season he is out for the year with a cracked hip. Was told back up RB is dealing with some injuries also but don't know if it's anything serious or just inconvenience things.

Grizz, I listened to that game on the radio at work. I wondered if the coach made any comments about throwing the ball up in the air. I've thought about it over the years and my guess was he didn't say to much since it ended well for Maiden, other than maybe telling the team to remember it is a live ball until the play is blown dead, even after the clock runs down. Thought I'd ask you.

He told our QB Spake, "I love ya son, but that's the most boneheaded play I've ever seen. Don't ever do it again."

LOL y'all had a nice tom brown 😂. He might tell you he loved you when I was there but there's going to be a lot of cuss words and screaming before that was said. If you messed up in practice you grab you by the face mask and twist your helmet sideways till you felt like your neck would break 😂😂. We didn't fear other teams because we were more scared of Coach Brown on the sideline.

No no....Logan Spake got a nice Tom Brown. I got a "damnit Jacks" once at school, twice at practices, and three times on Friday nights

Now that conference play is back in swing, I'm going to bore you all with my recent history lesson for the Maiden game. First, however, I'll highlight our Coach:

Will Byrne at Maiden
57-16 Overall Record (78%)
Home = 31-9 (78%)
Away = 26-7 (79%)
Non-Conf = 19-3 (86%)
Conf = 34-7 (83%)
Playoff = 4-6 (40%)
-----------------
Vs East Burke = 3-0 (100%)

I have complete records since 2004 - still working on compiling more for Maiden:

**Maiden leads series 6-2 since 2007
**While Conference Opponents Maiden leads 4-1
**Maiden has outscored East Burke 292-89 in those 8 games
**East Burke last won in 2009 (42-0 victory)
**East Burke has been held to 7 points or less in 6 of those games (2 shutouts)

See y'all tonight for the drive-by-drive.
