CVAC 2022 - State Playoffs Round 3 BHHS at MHS

We knew this was coming but nothing was said about it. Bruce Ollis is irreplaceable!!!!! Best coach and leader of young men I have ever gotten the pleasure of watching. The upcoming years are going to be hard … not a lot of talent left
Hearing Newton coach is interested

From my memory it would be Ashe County several years back. I want to say the temperature was in the single digits and snow flurries with wind-chill negative degrees. It was so cold people were huddling up in the bathrooms to get warm.

Thanks LHSfaninVA, I have no doubt you know about such things and I'm certainly not qualified to take issue with what you'd know. Unfortunately, I still have the imagination of a kid. Give me a few more years and I'll probably have the complete mentality and temperament of one.

Most of us, around here, might wonder how could "Maiden" ever compete with these huge metropolitan areas you mentioned. When I think of DC The U.S Government comes to mind, Boston, I think of Harvard and brilliant students, Raleigh-Durham with NC State, Duke and Carolina and Research Triangle Park. All these places have the roads, population and workforce along with the other amenities to accommodate and sustain this type of business.

Just wondered if it isn't possible, though, paradoxically speaking, that Maiden has enough to maybe compete with these other areas or is off to a good start. It's at least, a de facto part of the Charlotte metropolitan area which claims the second largest banking center on the east coast behind New York and similar to San Francisco. There is a fairly large and diverse work force within driving distance, Maiden is easily accessible to an international airport and centrally located between to interstates carrying traffic in all four directions and there is undeveloped land for expansion and housing. North Carolina has a right to work law unlike Boston and DC, and Raleigh-Durham has what I'd think of as considerable northern influence along with Wake County which was and probably still is the wealthiest county in this state. Point being, there is that possibility of cheaper labor and less union concerns, at least initially. I think Catawba County would do all it could to provide the necessary infrastructure and utilities, along with lower taxes.

Where this area would fall short as opposed to the others is the lack of prestigious universities. Some years back I read that the progeny for the high tech industry came out of Stanford University's school of engineering. It's been a long time since I saw this but it wouldn't surprise me if that is correct.
The only large four year institution in this area is UNCC which I've also heard has surpassed UNC Chapel Hill, recently, in overall enrollment. In NO WAY am I trying to compare UNCC to Stanford or Chapel Hill, but it does have a school of engineering and other technical studies, and with proper funding, someday, it could possibly help to meet the needs and provisions of something requiring the skills and thought that high tech would require. On top of that, for the higher paying jobs, for someone coming to the area moving shouldn't have a lot of effect.

Frankly, I believe we have many smart people in this area that could handle most kinds of jobs in that industry, given the opportunity (hey, we might get you to come back home) , and even people with the training for very skilled work. I mentioned infrastructure, utilities and future development for facilities and housing, one of the people we post with on here, I'm thinking, is an engineer. I don't want to say his name so as not to embarrass him, but it rhymes with GrizzlyLevel. Please correct me if I'm wrong on that.
Saying Maiden could be the new Silicon Valley may sound far fetched and said in a lighthearted way, but strangely enough, I believe it's reasonably possible.

You remember Coach Harris, I had a bet with him once. We were at the Block Smith gymnasium on East Rhodes Street, the bet was he could not hit a half-court shot in three try's. The very first one was nothing but net. It was a two-handed set shot. at his age I couldn't believe it. He was very gracious. He called me a sucker and told me "You cannot beat a man at his own game", and that I should have known since he had made the bet.
So, Before you write me off let me repeat my disclaimer of knowing less than you and having a big imagination, but hey, doesn't bizarre thought kind of fit in with that field.

Postscript: Have a set of 1962 encyclopedias. When they were published Cupertino was similar in size to Maiden, back then. Maybe it's the little blue dot's time. Just a passing thought. 😊

Side note: You mentioned having been there, I assume it was to Apple Headquarters. That would be something to see. In photos it looks surreal. It looks like the mothership or the Pentagon with all 90 degree angles smoothed out. I think if I weren't afraid to fly I'd go see it.
Lincolnton, they should have had you replace Alex Trebek or been considered as the permanent host of Jeopardy! I used to try deprecating humor at work and say things like I am from North Carolina and my bosses would be like don't even try it. We are on to you, LHS.

My first comment concerned how those areas in California have gotten out of control with the cost of living. I love the area, but it is heavily taxed and expensive. Firefighters, police officers, and teachers cannot afford to live close to their work. People making $150K+ live in sketchy apartments or are forced into a long commute. It is all fun and games until the only people who can afford homes in the area are those who make such salaries that they price everyone out. Imagine a situation where people you knew growing up could no longer afford to live in Catawba or Lincoln counties. When I was traveling, hotel rooms were jacked up Sunday through Thursday and then dropped Thursday night to Saturday. The Hiltons and Marriotts of the world would raise the rate for contract workers, or it could be actual employees who couldn't afford to live nearby. In the early week, I would stay out towards Freemont, heading towards wine country, and towards the end of the week, I would be downtown, Palo Alto.

Also, your memory is quite good. I read the Steve Jobs book a few years back. Silicon Valley is a perfect storm of the creation of Hewlett Packard, Stanford University (beautiful campus), and a prominent defense complex nearby at the time. Add World War II, and the government was the catalyst for the implosion that created Silicon Valley.

You did a beautiful job of selling the finer points of the area. Did you use to ever be in sales or business development? I could see you going places.

I have yet to go to the new Apple campus. I will schedule a work trip later in 2023 to that part of California.

Happy eighth anniversary - to the 50 or so Blue Devil fans that braved the bitter cold (-2 at kickoff IIRC) on this day, November 14, 2014, and traveled up to Jefferson City to watch our Blue Devils lose to Ashe Co. 34-27 in the first round of the 2A playoffs. I've never been that cold before or since, and hope to never be that cold again.

Yep coldest I have ever been and I was bundled up more than I have ever been. And the whole game they were bundling up Christmas trees behind the stadium. 2nd coldest I remember is a game at Brevard. Ended with a pass just a little to high for Petey McLain and his man had fell down. Would of been a walk in winning TD

Thank you my friend for taking time to respond. Here, guys like me will too often grab at anything that glows and looks prosperous, then when we discover a barb it’s too late.
Our people who have excelled and have lived or now live in other parts of the country have seen this first hand, unlike me, an eternal homebody.
I have no doubt that what you’re saying is correct. You’d mentioned an annual salary of 150,000. Here, now, someone making that kind of money could live in some of our finest locations which I know you’re aware of this.
Also know, many people here are proud that people like yourself are able to do difficult work, like I know you must be doing.
As I’ve mentioned to you before, if they aren’t good to you in Northern Virginia, (which have some of the wealthiest areas in the entire country) come on back home. Thanks again for the response, knowledge and information.

Side note: Saw in today’s obituaries that Mr. Turner, (Columbus Turner, Jr., “CJ”) mathematics and drivers’ Ed teacher, at LHS, died over the weekend, if you remember him. He was 90.

I had Mr. Turner for driver's ed, and I did hear the news. Funny story. I was taking driver's ed one day. We were in the eastern part of the county past East Lincoln. As you know, there wasn't much around those parts except filling stations. Mr. Turner had zoned out. It was a gray, dreary kind of day. I wanted to be able to say I drove to Mecklenburg County. My goal was to go as quickly as possible to see if I could get to Huntersville. I increased the speed in the student driver's car. I had just made it past Cowan's Ford dam when Mr. Turner snapped out of it. He calmly said turn it around and let's switch drivers.

1993 state championship in Chapel Hill or 2009 3rd round at Mountain Heritage. We won in ‘93, so that made it not so bad. Lost a heartbreaker in ‘09, which made it feel colder.
I remember Lincolnton faithful huddled in the bathroom hoping Briggs would take over the second half. He did. As for 2009, I am pretty sure I arrived at the Mountain Heritage game after halftime. Back when you could pencil the Wolves in for a Black Friday game. I guess for MH I never had a chance to get cold.

"Slow it down, lead-foot"

Yep. Add that Reidsville semifinal game a few years back to the list somewhere...
