Maiden Creek, that is a really nice shoutout to WNNC, hopefully some of the staff will get to see it. Here, inside of Lincolnton it's hard to get their AM broadcast at night because they must cut their power, but in the day it comes in clear. Now, I think they have an FM station and an internet stream.
In 1978 my Father and I would try and pick up their broadcasts of the Maiden playoff games. We would listen to the roar of the static but once in awhile it would clear up just enough to tell who was winning.
We too have a good station which is a part of a conglomerate called KTC Broadcasting. I appreciate our guys even though I think there's a couple of them who don't like us very much. There was one back in the late eighties and he gave me the impression that he hated out guts. We were going through one of those dry spells like we're trying to pull out of now and having to listen to that guy when I had to work took some effort. But all things considered they're pretty good to us.
Up until probably the late seventies and maybe into the early eighties WLON Lincolnton didn't broadcast at night. When Lincolnton would play Maiden, there, and we couldn't pick up WNNC at all my Dad would call one of the beer joints there in Maiden because he knew they'd be listening to it. If your wondering if my Father's connection to this beer joint was as a customer, that's a yes. He worked in Maiden and that was one of his daily stops. Anyway, I'm sure WNNC appreciates your positive comments.
Here are my picks:
Lincolnton at East Burke: I pick the Wolves by 10-Sorry Burkeforreal. I'm pulling for you to get another victory but I don't want it to be us. I better not say too much since East Burke beat Patton and nearly beat Newton-Conover. You already got one win over us this season with your adopted team, namely, North Lincoln, so we can't give you the last laugh... Hey! then you'd be the "Laughing Cavalier" 🙃
Newton-Conover at Bandys: Newton-Conover must have some athletes. I wasn't there but I still haven't figured out how we came from seventeen points down. I saw where GrizzlyDevil said the Trojans might have some starters back so I look for a good game. I'll take Bandys by a point.
West Lincoln at West Caldwell: Sorry Warriors, these guys have had a couple of tough games over the last two weeks and are looking to score some points. I'd like to see the Warriors win their first game, it's only been a couple of weeks ago that we won our first of the season and it felt awfully good. I'm afraid this one won't be it. West by 12
Maiden at Bunker Hill: Do tell. This will be one of the most anticipated 2A games in the state. After the Bears win over West Lincoln, even though no one will admit it, the BH faithful like their chances of upending Maiden since WL played them close. All that told me is the Blue Devils know how to hold on and win in a dire situation, just another trait that good teams have.
I like BH and glad to see them playing good football but Maiden does too many things too well. Blue Devils by 10
*Postscript: The most under appreciated people in Catawba County and maybe in the state are going to be those poor souls having to sell tickets and concessions to the Maiden crowd at Bunker Hill High School, Friday night. You're going to feel like King Balak in Numbers 22:3. You'll probably ask yourself "Where do they all come from". Don't despair, they'll be good to you.
