If Cherokee has everything u would want as a coach then 1. Why hasn’t they been successful and also #2 why do coaches leave ?
I think the obvious answer is because it is associated with the reservation. I am not sure how that all plays into it, but I am sure it is different than other jobs.

They have had some success. I know some kids went to Swain and Smoky Mountain to play sports.

They filled the lower part of the Joel Coliseum when their girls won the state title last year.

I remember that from last year. They brought an impressive crowd to Joel Coliseum

They've won a state title in the last decade, and were consistently good when McCoy was the coach in the late 2000s, so I wouldn't say they haven't been successful. And they finished above .500 with a playoff win last year. But you have to compete with some really strong programs in your conference there, plus all the kids from trust land also have the option to go to their county school.

NCHSAA put an end to a lot of the transfers to Swain. As I understand it that's why the state put in the no transfer rule a few years ago. Swain can thank the Qualla Boundary for some of those last few state rings! And these days Cherokee is a superior program to Swain - that's my story and I'm stickin to it. Hate to see Coach Hawkins go!

As a former SMHS coach, I would love that job. Great facilities and good people at Cherokee. Tough to get in though and housing costs are really bad.

Just out of curiosity I had heard the program had trouble getting kids to come out for the team and the programs numbers were low?? Not sure if that was the case thought I was ask??

It goes both ways transfer wise and a bunch of those kids on those last few teams you speak of played at Swain since youth league. We both know why Cherokee struggles and it ain't ever been talent, or lack thereof regardless of what's been said on this thread.

41 kids on MaxPreps roster. I know MaxPreps is not always super reliable. But I’d say that’s decent numbers for a school of their size. ADM was 389. I believe that conference plays JV grades 7-9 and V 10-12

Okay 👍 thanks for the info!! They weren't bad last season at least I didn't think they were!! I would say the Murphy game would have been the worst game they played in the regular season but they still reached the 2nd Round and won 7 Games!!

You can make more money at Walmart then most state jobs!
I've heard this most of my teaching career and always laugh. First year teachers in NC now make over $42,000 and that's for fewer than 200 days of actual work each year. No weekends, very few nights, summers off, huge amounts of time at all holidays, solid health insurance and a good retirement check for the rest of your life. See how much of that you get with your $16 an hour job at Walmart.

They won the small 1A State Championship in 2017 going 14-1 losing only to Murphy.

Those new teachers have been stripped of many benefits and the health plan is an absolute disaster thanks to Dale Folwell.

Also first year teachers make $41,000.

And can you imagine working 15 years for a company then go years 15-24 without a raise?

I've been teaching well over 30 years and have never gone anywhere close to that long without a raise. I have enjoyed time with my family that no other job could offer and that's more important to me than a few more dollars.

Do you teach in NC?

Currently teachers between years 15-24 are locked in at a bit over $53,000 for that time frame. That's 10 years without a raise.

Health insurance premiums are about to go up to and the more you make, the more the premium.

The State Senate passed a bill today(I have not had a chance to look into full details) that would limit the procedures and treatment the SHP will cover.

The benefits are definitely not as good as they were when I started my career decades ago but I have many friends who have no insurance or retirement other than what they fund themselves.

I can only speak for myself...it's been a wonderful career! The relationships I've built with students, colleagues, and the community are worth more than money can buy. Getting to play a role in the lives of others and have all the time with my own family are parts of the job I would never trade.

I've never once complained about my pay and am grateful for the "other" benefits of my chosen profession!

Yes, my entire career has been in North Carolina. By the time those rules were passed, I was already past that point in my career. If more money is an issue for young teachers they can drive a bus (1 hour per day is about $400 more per month), move to a district that pays a higher supplement, coach, tutor, or get their National Board Certification. I've done most all of those at some point when I needed a little extra.
