Cherokee Headcoach Resigns

McCoy was the real MVP in the late 2000s, building a squad like a boss! Finishing above .500? That's like winning the Carolina Lottery twice! But for real, the competition be fierce, and with NCHSAA dropping transfer rules like they’re hot, it’s a whole new game. Can we talk about the Qualla Boundary, though? It’s like a secret cheat code that helped Cherokee flex their muscles! Local vibes and school policies are the hidden sauce for winning championships! And about that USAID cash, like should we help locals first? Prioritizing our teachers and vets over sending dough abroad. It’s a spicy debate, like a hot dog at a Carolina Panther's game! Let’s get our priorities straight.

Yes, my entire career has been in North Carolina. By the time those rules were passed, I was already past that point in my career. If more money is an issue for young teachers they can drive a bus (1 hour per day is about $400 more per month), move to a district that pays a higher supplement, coach, tutor, or get their National Board Certification. I've done most all of those at some point when I needed a little extra.

I appreciate your service to the state for so many years and while it's easy to say do those extra things, people shouldn't have to do so many extra things to survive. Driving a bus carries much liability and responsibility and there are many health issues that can prevent you from driving a bus.

Coaching in many districts doesn't even come close to paying for the hours that are put in. And not everyone is a coach or should be coaching.

You can't expect people to uproot their lives for a higher supplement or drive further to work than the extra supplement helps.

Teachers need to be compensated for their time and effort and NC should be in the top 20 if not 10 in teacher pay. And the government needs to stand up to big business and get inflation under control and stop worrying about tax cuts for the wealthy. But don't expect that to happen with the wealthy calling the shots. While the salaries may be higher now than the 90s, the money sure doesn't go as far.

Coaching in all districts don’t even come close would be a better statement. Even in single systems that pay 12 month supplements and higher salaries doesn’t cover all the time that they perform.
