No clue brother...just saw post on Cherokee Facebook so was just relaying the news
I think it’s a federal job and I think it pays better than a state job. But don’t hold me to that
I have heard that they pay very well, so to me it aint a state job.

It has a jumbo scoreboard overhead and it’s double decker seating - It like a small college almost
Their weight room/fieldhouse is better than many small colleges.
Cherokee’s facilities are top notch. Love driving by it on the way to the KOA.

If Cherokee has everything u would want as a coach then 1. Why hasn’t they been successful and also #2 why do coaches leave ?
I think the obvious answer is because it is associated with the reservation. I am not sure how that all plays into it, but I am sure it is different than other jobs.
They have had some success. I know some kids went to Swain and Smoky Mountain to play sports.
They filled the lower part of the Joel Coliseum when their girls won the state title last year.

I remember that from last year. They brought an impressive crowd to Joel Coliseum
They also won a football championship a few years ago with former WCU coach Kent Briggs.
They've won a state title in the last decade, and were consistently good when McCoy was the coach in the late 2000s, so I wouldn't say they haven't been successful. And they finished above .500 with a playoff win last year. But you have to compete with some really strong programs in your conference there, plus all the kids from trust land also have the option to go to their county school.
NCHSAA put an end to a lot of the transfers to Swain. As I understand it that's why the state put in the no transfer rule a few years ago. Swain can thank the Qualla Boundary for some of those last few state rings! And these days Cherokee is a superior program to Swain - that's my story and I'm stickin to it. Hate to see Coach Hawkins go!
As a former SMHS coach, I would love that job. Great facilities and good people at Cherokee. Tough to get in though and housing costs are really bad.
