Butler Vs Richmond

Butler doesn't really have a 2nd group this year, LOL. Richmond kept their starters in all game as well.

More specifically, Butler rotates several players along the dline and at WR, but that's about it for this season.

Also, a pet peeve of mine...I HATE last minute scores. MC had a TD with 30 seconds left and Richmond tacked on a TD with a minute left tonight. Butler's D coordinator needs to get on these guys about finishing the job and playing all the way to the final whistle.

Glad Butler did get some revenge from last year. A lot of Raider fans talked trash after a Richmond comeback. Butler needs to stay focused throughout the game and remain disciplined.

First game I attended this year and not too disappointed.... If we can fix the offensive line, we may be ok this year... Very happy with the effort, defense, and coaches aggressiveness on play calling..... At least we know where we stand and what we need to do to improve.... Glad to see Quentin back... He played hard from behind the line

IMO, Richmond's run defense is the best I've seen this year. I mention this because Pinecrest and Scotland are both extremely run heavy teams. Hmmmmmm.....

Ok in the first half Richmond gave Butler the game. All touchdowns scored were from short field positions except the last drive of the first half. Butler did a great job of taking advantage of Richmond's offensive mistakes.

2nd half, Richmond shut Butler offense down and moved the ball on offense themselves. I think we had (by our unofficial stats) 14 yards in the first half and 160 in the second.

Not taking anything away from Butler. Butler coaching was on point as was their play. For years Charlotte teams have taken advantage of our "cushion" that we give to your receivers and they did it most of the night again. Also saw them practicing before the game shutting down our jet sweep and shut it down they did.

Can't speak for anyone else, but I'm not scared to meet them again in the playoffs. Think we have at least an even chance of taking the next game. Good luck the rest of the way.

Butler didn't play that great in the second half especially with the penalties. Don't know if the game will be competitive if they play Butler again.

If they meet again in playoff, Butler will play 4Q and crush Richmond for sure ......mindset in Sept and November is a huge difference. I see it again and again in HS ball. I remember that MC barely beat Butler in reg season last year then rolled over them in playoff. Another thing would be interesting is how Richmond fare against Dudley in couple weeks.

Butler beat Mallard Creek in the regular season.
Playoffs is a different story although Butler's QB got hurt during the game and didn't return. Still MC dominated in the playoffs.

I knew some people would be ready to jump on this game after seeing the score. Was proud of our defense tonight. They played well except for what Twister said about the soft corners. Thats been one of our weak points even before this year so before someone starts about the new coach, that part of the defense has been our weak point before this year. Run defense plays hard and swarms to the ball. The offensive turnovers in first half was the deciding point of the game and anybody that doesnt agree with that wasnt watching same game that i was watching. Butler took advantage of mistakes and their coaches took advantage of the soft corner play. They did a good job of adjusting to what Richmond was giving. Well, that one is over so on to next week. Not the end of the world.

So we've established that Independence is a team of the past, no longer relevant. Can we now add Richmond to that list and soon Butler as obviously the talent is drying up there since hokie said "Butler doesn't really have a 2nd group this year...."?

Seems like if you lookup "big boy football" in the dictionary there's only one team listed....MC.

As myself and Raider7967 were discussing, I wonder if this new Raleigh coach will continue to schedule games like this for the Raiders? As everyone knows, that's not usually their cup of tea. The state's going to lose out on some terrific matchups if he dumbs things down. Like Hoggard or not...you have to admit he had some serious gonads.

I wonder what the new coach will think of the return trip next year in Memorial Stadium under the skyscrapers?
One thing Hoggard did for sure...he set a high bar with the schedule. I just don't think you can tame that down much if you want to be a contender. I certainly hope the new coach will keep that mentality going as we need these games. I don't always like the outcome with Butler, but this has become a fun rivalry. You can see teams like that now and learn from it or play cupcakes and be shellshocked in the playoffs.

Relax raider nation.the only ones who thought this would he close was you..its only one loss of the 3 possible 4 this year.you guys will be fine.. And next year..woooohoo..the raiders will be back.so relax. Take it in stride..brighter days are ahead.honestly..our close game with Britt was more of a shock than your blowout..you guys will be fine..

Butler does have a 2nd team that is better than 80% of other schools 2nd team. They have a 6'1 sophomore WR that is 4th on the depth chart but will be a D1 recruit in a couple years. The freshman class that just came in is the biggest one in about 3 or 4 years and beat mallard creeks JV. Butler is here to stay i don't know what the hell you are talking about.

Butler didn't win 55-0. The game ended 32-13. Why would they put in their 2nd team?? Especially against an undefeated Richmond county team. Strange things have happened ....*cough last season *cough. Go back to your 2a board where you have 15 kids on the roster...

So Mac what you are saying is the Butler boys quit playing in the second half and none of the credit for Butler being shut out in the second half is given to Richmond? Or that the offensive adjustments that were made at halftime by the Raiders counted either?

You couldn't have been at the game or you were one of the students yelling scoreboard the entire second half. If you were at the game and have any knowledge of football or heck Coach Hales and the Bulldogs for that matter, you'd know they didn't stop playing. Adjustments were made and Richmond closed the gap and yes, if the Raiders continue to improve as they have been over the rest of the season, I would gladly come up to the Queen City to take you guys on again!

Thanks Twister, and for Mr danerdawg, no one is upset that needs to calm down. I will say again, the score does not indicate how close of a game this could have been without our offensive hiccups in first half. I did and will again give Butler credit for taking advantage of what was there and the mistakes. Thats part of the game. We will be fine and still proud as heck of our kids and there will be better times and not gonna panic or worry. More important things in life than a loss on Friday. On to Southview

First game I've been to this year. I have to say if Richmond doesn't turn the ball over this is a really close game. I think Butler was the overall better team but not by what the score indicated. Butler and Richmond both have great defenses.

I remember that MC barely beat Butler in reg season last year then rolled over them in playoff.
Butler lost their all-state QB in that playoff game early in the 2nd qtr after beating MC in the regular season. If it had been MC that lost their QB instead, then Butler would've rolled them in that game.

I thought before the game started that this one would be a 17-14 type of deal. Without the turnovers, that's probably what we would've seen. Butler went a little conservative on the play calling in the second half (to be expected with a green QB while sitting on a lead on the road), but the #1 thing that changed the momentum of the game was all of the stupid penalties on Butler in the 2nd half. Those penalties extended Richmond drives on several occasions when the D had made stops (including a roughing the passer penalty in Richmond's end zone after a 3rd and a mile incompletion) and killed some promising drives for Butler. If I'm not mistaken, Richmond's first scoring drive was extended twice by avoidable 3rd down penalties (the 2nd TD was a short field after a bad punt snap). If Butler wants to win a game like this in the playoffs, they are going to have to clean up the mental aspect of things. The good news is the team is fairly inexperienced so there's still plenty of room for improvement there.

Omg..can rc come up with anymore excuses as to why they got their brakes beat off last night?...lol..too funny...

32-0 at the half is ridiculous. It's amazing how some Raider fans are OK with getting beat NOW. Sometimes you get what you ask for.

Richmond's o line looked very good on the run blocking and with the quick running back being a small target it made for some nice games as he darted through the hole. I think the pass opens that up a little more but the passing attack is limited until the line picks up the blocking schemes better and the QB gets better understanding of the passing game. I think the QB has potential. He is the type of kid if you can get him in middle school and start working with him he can be very successful. The line is not as big nor as athletic as I have seen in past years. O line is the spot that takes the longest time to pick up a change in scheme and to gel. They will continue to improve.

Richmond defensive front looked great but the pass defense had a lot of holes. Is Butler's weak point going to again be the O line. I thought they looked solid defensively but the linebackers allowed themselves on several running plays to get sucked in but I think they were also shooting the gaps off of set calls.

We can talk about calls and turnovers but the biggest weapon on the field for Butler, just like Byrnes against MC, was the specialist! Richmond had a strong kicker last year and putting a team on the twenty every time is the first line of a strong D and also a demoralizer to the other squad.

In warmups I thought Butler looked a lot more athletic with more size. Game played out about how I expected with Butler winning by a few scores but I thought they would be able to move the ball better on the ground and expected Richmond to score more which was negated by a combination of turnovers, field position, and the offense not clicking consistently.

Richmond is going to lose some games but it takes time to completely change your philosophy.

Well said Twist!

Go Raiders!!!

Btango you are spot on with you post. I feel that a lot of the turnovers in the first half was because of timing between the QB and Goodwin. For the most part I think Goodwin being out for two weeks caused this. The kicking game was very poor. This has happened all year. we have had some blocked punts and poor kicks earlier in the year. The punter was slow in getting his punts off. It appears that they have been working on that but now we are getting poor kicks. I am sure the coaches will find an answer. Before someone says Richmond fan making another excuse you are wrong. Just looking at where we can improve. While I am a Richmond fan, I have long admired Butler and their program. There first victory over Richmond years ago was the time they realized they had arrived at the top level. They are one of the few programs that have more wins against Richmond than loses. As I work a entrance at the game I would also say as I have in the past, The Butler fans are the nicest fan group we deal with. They are first class people.

Yes all of that led to Richmond having success......BUT look at what led to Buttlers scoring.....Bad snap safety, fumble return td, interception return ...So Butlers offense was mainly Richmond mistakes on offense.....As I said before Richmond gave AWAY 22 PT.... BUTLER PLAYED HARD AND WAS WELL COACHED , BUT Richmond MADE THEM LOOK GOOD IN THE FIRST HALF WITH ALL THE MISTAKES...Our mistakes and you took advantage of them...Two very good teams that will only improve........Both teams have some improving to do and will be forces in the Playoffs.....Good luck to both teams ...... DEV , I agree with your comments ..Well spoken... ....nuff said

In 2008 Richmind went 8-3 in the regular season and wound up winning the state championship. So what if they go 9-2 this year. First one to five wins.

Thanks GO. And also everyone seems to forget that there is only one champion in each class so therefore you can gloat and make all your smart a#$ comments but in the end there will only be ONE team that will have the right to boast. As far as beating the brakes off someone, really, now that was a LOL. Everyone that has been on here that saw the game gave Butler all the credit for doing what you have to do to win. Not their fault we stunk it up and didn't make the score closer but take away the mistakes and penalties for both teams and we had a heck of a game. Probably in the line of 17-14 or so and the kicker for Butler was a big difference also. The kid has a leg on him.

That's exactly what I said...without the turnovers, this was a 17-14 type game.

I also think these refs were from charlotte because they threw a 15 yard penelty for sideline infraction when they never issued a warning! All game long Hales was on the field and they call nothing!! I did expect a loss by my raiders but not getting embarassed like that!

Judging by the 3rd qtr, if they were Charlotte refs, then they had a previous bone to pick with Butler. I couldn't believe how many flags Butler drew in that qtr.

But either way, at least it wasn't like last year when the two teams combined for more than 50 penalties that added up to almost 400 yards. That was the most flagged high school game I've ever seen.

The officials for all Richmond regular season games are furnished by the Southeastern association based in Fayetteville.

When an official is contacted in the restricted area by bench personnel during a play, no warning is issued. It's an automatic 15 yard personal penalty.

If we continue to play like last night we will lose to greensboro pinecrest and scotland and probaly get knocked out in the 1st round!!!

I challenge you to find where I have been inconsistent in my statements. Pretty much exactly what I have said would happen has happened. And people like you are doing exactly what I predicted.

Carry on.

Im all for a twin bill Scotland and Richmond back to back against a couple of Charlotte powers.

Well Scotland played Indy who is in the SW4A and Butler played Richmond this year. I would love to see Butler play Scotland because to me the rivalry with Richmond is stale. If Butler holds on to a two touchdown lead in 90 seconds last year, it could be said that Richmond hasn't beaten Butler in 12 years. Butler has played Scotland County once, so that would be an interesting matchup. Richmond vs. Indy would be something interesting and fresh for the regular season.

It seems as if you guys can't be happy. Remember the triple option won you the game last year. I guess your new coach doesn't have to live the RC life. Bad game he leaves and goes to the Beach or Pinehurst. He is not a vested person in the county giving his all for the Raider football team. Good thing he only came be at a big time program for awhile and then leave in a couple of years. Maybe then you can get Hoggard back and treat him like the good coach he was.
