Vacationed at the Outer Banks in October. We drove past Ocracoke High School. Read an article from 2018 about the girls basketball team. One of their closest opponents is First Flight and its a 6 hour round trip. Due to the ferry ride they have to consider fog and wind. They don’t field a football team.

How many play football?

They either need to make 1a larger than 64 or do football only realignment. With 6 classes.

✓= football
X= no football
? = Not sure

Let me know who plays football

I quit counting at 20 schools…Football will have to be modified big time….especially 1A…keep in mind only 32 make playoffs

Man that would be the Robbinsville invitational 9 out of 10 years. As dominate as Tarboro has been Robbinsville would be that and more.

Agree that NC needs to do something to make the playing field more level 1a-4a but this would be like a yearly SMC feast in most sports. not saying this is the wrong way to do it though.

Go Mountaineers

A few years ago there was an option discussed with non football playing schools being 1A. The thought was that would remove the charters and Parochials from the non football playoffs without really making it about those schools. Non football playing schools are allowed to play more basketball games than schools with football. Never understood how that was fair but it is not about fair, it's about participation.

Continuing with BK's ✔️ and X As far as I can tell these are the teams on the list who had a NCHSAA RPI football ranking...

You'd have to do a bracket of 16 and actually earn a playoff bid. All those football playing schools would end up in a split conference.

Btw who is East Wilkes Academy? Did you mean East Wake?

That had me confused but the is a East Wilkes and a East Wilkes Academy. I had to look up the ADM numbers to see.
The two Wilson preps had me confused as well.

If someone opens up a charter in Eastern Wilkes and had 360 kids I would certainly question where they got them from lol

This would be sad. Of the 18 East teams looks like only 4 was in the top 15 RPI rankings out of 33 schools and one of those was Bear Grass
And in the West 4 as well of the 12 out of 34 schools and one of those was Christ the King.
If you won the 1A in this group I don't see you winning much of anything.

Let’s start the bidding
I would be willing to go to 0-425 for 1a
How many teams will that be

Corvian Community also plays football and is joining a conference starting next year. Is Columbus West Columbus?

So wait.......Andrews is not the smallest football playing school? For some reason I always thought they were since Mattamuskeet and those other teams near the Banks stopped playing 11 man.

20 years ago (2002 ADM) Cherokee was 268. But for Cherokee, school growth is as much about kids choosing them over Swain and Smoky Mountain as it is population growth (or maybe moreso). With the new school and a lot of the programs they have they've done a good job with that.

Looking at the 2002 1A ADM, some crazy changes are that Princeton was 314 then and they're 2A now, while Plymouth (527) and Creswell (103) used to combine for 630 but Washington Co. is only 334 as a consolidated school.

Princeton's population has only grown by a bit over 100 in 10 years.

Washingtons population shrank 16% between 2010 and 2020.

432 nchsaa member schools with latest adms released last week this is your smallest 64. I actually believe we should go to 8 classes and have 54 in each class still have 32 make playoffs for all sports. i know 1a football would have to be different (smaller playoff number ) depending on number of football playing schools. Other than that i think this would allow for the most fair and competitive playoffs across the board in the major sports football, m/w basketball, volleyball, baseball and softball. As far as other sports golf tennis wrestling etc that would need to be worked out. thoughts are welcomed?
