2A West Regional Final..Reidsville vs Brevard

2006 is correct .. that was the year the Rams lost only 2 games - both to Burlington Cummings. The second loss was in the regional final. Beat Lexington, Brevard and then Newton-Conover (Miracle in the Mud game) before losing to Cummings 39-21.

I'm Marlon Roach, been years since I've been on here but the people talking about rams strength of schedule got me back in it. I was #83 then in 2006 switch to #24 after Gary Pickard graduated.

The miracle in the Mud game was an emotional roar coaster for us. But no excuses to lose in the fashion we did to Cummings. We were disappointed that year. But came ready the next year to right the wrong

We lost in OT in regular season. Cummings QB fumbled on 4th and goal in OT into the endzone on purpose and they recovered. That is actually a penalty but wasn't called. The qb was supposed to be only one able to recover it. That was the difference in home field for playoffs

Maybe the old Asheville Memorial Stadium? It was in use by the high schools from 1949 to 1984. More at this link:
http://www.cougarsportsnet.com/facilities/asheville-high-school-memorial-stadium/

It probably was Memorial Stadium in Asheville....I have some game footage provided to me by my old friend Cheerduck that shows the Glen Alpine/Andrews Class A Regional Championship game in the early 60s that was played at Asheville Memorial Stadium which I guess was used as a neutral site for playoff games from different classes back in those days....

Few teams if any in this state can match the rich tradition and history of your Rams who won their first state Class B title in 1930 beating Apex 20-7 in the final....Of course, your Rams also beat Apex 6-0 in 1931, and made it a trifecta in 1932 with a 32-12 win over Elizabeth City who won the state title in 33' over Burlington(19-0)....The Rams were back in the title game in 34', but lost to Edenton 6-0....Your Rams won the Class "B" title again in 37' & 39' beating Hamlet both years before also winning the 1940 title(14-12) over Elizabeth City...

Play changed to Class AA, A & B in 1941 with your Rams tying Laurinburg 6-6 for the 1943 Class A Title before losing to Laurinburg(8-7) in 44' and beating Laurinburg 27-0 in 1945....The 1949 Rams' team lost to Henderson(20-14) in Class A Title game....

In 1950, Classification names were changed to Class AAA, AA & A....

From 1950 thru 1958, Reidsville played in the Class AA, and won the title in 1950, shutting out Henderson 26-0 in the title game before losing to Lumberton(18-13) in the 51' Class AA title game...The Rams won the Class AA title again in 1954, beating Graham(20-6) in the title game....

Beginning in 1959, the Classification names were changed to Class AAAA,AAA, AA and A....

During this era is when Brevard became a prominent name around the state as the Bluedevils won the 1960 Class AAA title with former coach Cliff Brookshire, beating Rockingham 26-0....The Class AAA titles were then split into Regional titles from 1961 thru 1966, and Brevard lost the 1961 Region 2 title to Canton 20-0 before winning to 1962 Region title, beating Greensboro Bessemer 19-13 in the Region 2 title game...In 1963, Reidsville competed in their first ever Class AAA Regional 2 title game, and the game ended in a 0-0 tie with Brevard as mentioned above in the first ever meeting between the Rams and Bluedevils...Rockingham shutout Hamlet(13-0) in the Region 1 title game in 1963...Neither Brevard or Reidsville played for another Regional title after that 1963 0-0 tie....

Beginning in 1967, the Class AAA went to an East/West Championship format until 1971, and Reidsville claimed their first Class AAA Western title in 1969, beating Mount Airy(35-12)....The Rams claimed their 2nd Class AAA West title the following year in 1970 with a 10-7 win over Canton Pisgah

Beginning in 1972, the Class AAA began playing for consolidated state titles again, and the first two titles ended in ties as Tuscola and Sanford played to a 14-14 tie in 72' and Ragsdale and East Bladen played to a 16-16 deadlock in 1973....

Brevard of course won the Class AAA title in 1982 in Brevard, beating Bertie County 15-7 in a game that I attended, and I've never seen a town so electric and alive after that win with people hanging out of cars, blowing their horns and fans a hollering....Still miss those championship games at the High Schools, but times change....

I was down in Lincolnton the last time Brevard played in a Western Regional title game in 2005, and the Bluedevils had the game won if they had been able to tackle C.J.Wilson on the Wolves' sideline in the final 2 minutes...Unfortunately, he broke the tackle, and broke the Bluedevils heart(29-26) with a long TD run of about 60yds to send Lincolnton to the title game where the Wolves lost(13-6) to Clinton in the 2A title game....The same year that Reidsville lost(26-18) to Shelby in the 2AA title game...

On a side note, I've lived in Transylvania County for most of my life, and a name I remember when I was a youngster was former Brevard great, "Eagle" Moss....I seen an obituary recently that Eagle had passed, and I just wanted to take this opportunity to send my condolences to his family and friends....Still remember a Tuscola or Pisgah player who was not in the game, tackling Eagle Moss from the sideline, and former Radio Announcer Bill Norris made the call like this over the airways:" Now, here's the pitchout to Eagle, and there goes Eagle down the sideline....Wait a minute, someone has just come off the ( Tuscola or Pisgah..can't remember which?) sideline, and tackled Eagle Moss"....It's a Radio call that has lived in my memory since I was a kid, and a Rosman kid to boot...

Just goes to show you how the game of Football affects our lives in so many ways....

In regards to the game this friday, Brevard is not the same team that lost at Mountain Heritage to begin the season....This late season version of the Bluedevils is a confident bunch that has a lot of Senior leadership, and they are now a team that knows both their strengths and weaknesses, and will be a handful for the Rams this coming friday....

It's certainly a tall order for any team to go into Reidsville, and come out on top, but it is also not impossible....

For the record, who was the last playoff team to come to Reidsville and win?"

Good luck to the Bluedevils this friday in the Western 2A Final!.

Great writeup Rick !!!! And yes Im fairly certain Asheville Memorial stadium was the site for the western title games Riedsville played in..Murphy played at Asheville Memorial stadium in western finals at least twice, 1961 and 1970...Longtime Murphy fan Rex Killian told me one time that the goal post from the 1970 2A title game was torn down by Murphy fans and was last seen at Bates Creek , outside Murphy LOL !!!! How in the hell they got a goal post from Asheville to Bates Creek is a great question LOL ! I sure do miss the ball game road trips with guys like Rex , Whitey Scroggs and Jerry Graham...Those guys are gone now but the stories have been told and live on to this day... ... ...

Good job on research.....actually Reidsville was known as the Golden Lions until 1969 when they became the Rams...........actual first meeting with Brevard was in 1960 when Blue Devils beat Reidsville 39-6 first round playoff game.....Also remember Eagle Moss from Reidsville playoff game with Brevard in Brevard in 1970 on a very muddy field....Reidsville won 14-6....Hate to hear of his passing....I remember a play vs. Reidsville when Eagle caught a punt and was tatooed by 2 Reidsville players (one high, one low).....RAM players were Harry Lee and Hunter Dalton.....both of which have also passed......very sad...............

That was one of the many highlight games for Reidsville hall-of-famer Lee Cobb.

And don't forget maybe the biggest play of the game when Brevard ran a screen pass to Eagle Moss down on the Reidsville goal line and John King was the only Reidsville defender in the area and made the tackle preventing what would have been a Brevard TD in the first half.

FYI, Duke coaches were among several college coaches at the Reidsville/Mountain Heritage game.

The Blue Devils are recruiting the Rams WR/DB Breon Pass and QB Kyle Pinnix. Both are sophomores.

Don't know if they are looking at any Mountain Heritage players, but their Jr. Cole Shehan (#1) would be on my list.

I heard they are also looking at Travion Canada

actually I think that was Marcus Taylor instead of John King...but you may be right......TGT...ring any bells??

Thanks for the correction about the Mascot....I've said many times that one of the main things that I enjoy about this website is that you can learn so much about other teams, players, historical events and geograpy that you would have otherwise not known, so thanks for sharing some of your memories....

2 other great names from that era of Brevard Football was NFL Hall of Famer Mickey Marvin who finished High School at West Henderson, but I think that he played at Brevard for a season or two, and Ronnie Banther who later played at N.C.State....Both of those guys played on some great Brevard teams back in the 60's, and may have been a member of a Bluedevil team coached by legendary Coaches Cliff Brookshire or Ed Emory, but Bluedevil fans will have to confirm that?

Best I can recollect...I think Eagle's first name was Clyde, but he was always known as Eagle, and I never knew where that nickname originated...

The Bluedevils have had their share of notable and talented RBs through the years, but this year their RBs have flew for the most part under the radar, but they are obviously doing some great things in order for Brevard to advance to the Western Final....

I think that it's going to be a battle this friday night down in Reidsville....

Not sure I can look that one up although I kept the stats in that game.

Banther was an assistant coach at Reidsville for a year or two in the 70s
actually Ron Banther and Gary Nelson who both played for Brevard against Reidsville in 1970 game...became asst. coaches at Reidsville back in the mid 80's under Kelly Minyard....in 1970 Reidsville beat both Brevard and Pisgah in playoffs.....Pisgah had only lost 1 game and that was on a last second field goal by the aforementioned Gary Nelson (Brevard).....Rams beat Brevard 14-6 in Western 3A state semifinals and Pisgah in Western 3A state title game 10-7...............

Reidsville has one hell of a defence and you are not going to be able to run the ball on them the only chance you have of beating them is throwing the ball, but your quarterback better be accurate ,and there not going to give up big yardage the short throws are all you will get I wish Mt Heritage had come out throwing the football I new if it was a low scoring game we would lose but to be honest we played as good a game as possible our defence played a great game any time you hold Reidsville to 21 points you have had a good night ever body thinking some team in the east will beat Reidsville just because they did not blow My Heritage out will be in for a rude awakening Reidsville has athletes at ever position even one the bench ,they play hard and show great Sportsmanship I was really impressed with the Rams.

What do you remember about that game other than being cold?
if you're talking about the 1960 Brevard/Reidsville game....I was also there...it was cold, windy and Brevard dominated....I do remember a punt return for a TD by Reidsville being called back for clipping (never see that call anymore) when the score was relatively close..like 13-0 at the time......Brevard ended up winning 39-6........interesting note about the 1963 scoreless tie between these 2 teams......the game was scheduled to be played friday nite nov. 22nd, 1963......JFK was assassinated on that day and the game was played on Sat. afternoon.......not sure why they even played it then......for a title game it was sparsely attended....most of the country were glued to their TV sets for about a week...............................

One of the things I remember about the 1970 Reidsville/Brevard game had nothing to do with football.

I-40 from Hickory to Asheville had been completed but was not yet open to the public.

Someone had told us that it had been completed so we just went around the barriers and were zipping along about 75 or 80 mph when a highway patrolman passed us like we were poking along.

He never gave us a second look.:rolleyes:

Another thing I remember was the huge bets some of the Brevard fans were trying to make with Reidsville fans. The Brevard gamblers left the game a little lighter in the wallet that night.

I remember taking a chartered bus to that game. Seems we stayed overnight somewhere.
Maybe I stayed overnight and didn't ride back on the bus. Fuzzy after almost 50 years. Maybe I misremembered the whole thing other than being at the game.

Mule you remember that catch? I had forgotten it completely almost. I was nowhere near the athlete these rams have. Will be fun to watch next couple years .

I have 2 kids and another on the way. Hoping this one is a future ram product. My 2 little girls maybe as well but not for football haha

I would agree Sheehan would be a definite player to watch. Had a great defensive season and also has amazing hands. Catches about anything thrown any where around him. Good student as well. Also will be an important piece for the Heritage basketball team this year. The basketball team should be loaded and ready to make another deep run in the playoffs. Not often that a 2A high school is strong in both sports at the same time. We have definitely been blessed at Heritage the past couple of years.
