2023 DEER HUNTING STORIES

Own. Daddy went from 2 1/2 acres his daddy gave him to build a house on to well over 200. Daddy bought 60 where my house is located. We raised tobacco on 20 of it for years. There’s also around 120 at tobacco barns in pasture now and hardwoods. Another 10 acre patch surrounded by woods and good neighbors. My brother also owns 150 or so across river. When it comes to hunting I’m blessed to have many sites I have access to.
Wait a minute, I thought y’all were in the city? Can’t have that much acreage in a big city. 🏙️ Tax bill has got to be enormous.

Well the glare from the street lights sometimes can aid in late season…

That was one of the weirdest exchanges I’ve ever had on here.
Me?
A city boy?
Me!?! 😂😂

Last day of season gentlemen. Saw two does at 7:15 going across field about 250 yards away this morning. They must have heard it’s last day and didn’t waste any time. Son went to New Years thing last night so I was solo. Think he might go with old guy this afternoon. Hopefully he sees something.

Weather has been too cold for me. I turned into a wuss haha. Got all I want anyhow. 3. Still plenty on camera but need seed for next year. I still have land leased in Willis Va and there is a late season that goes thru end of March.

End of March!?!!!
Bow only?
Asking for a friend 😂

Last light today. Hear deer coming across the branch. Son sees them first. Doe in front is limping. She has a pie bald head. Haven’t seen her this year but saw her several times last season. Anyway there’s a four point with them that I never saw. Stays in front of my son’s stand until after he gets down. He hunted four/five times all year and passed on deer thirty yards away because he said too small. What he never saw was buck behind pie bald head doe. Don’t know points, about 180 from me, but did see he was outside ears. Glad he saw deer, hate he didn’t see bigger boy. Was an exciting last evening for us both.
And that’s my last deer story for 2023/2024
As always been a fun time in the woods.

Time to let the Beagles lose
Daddy used to have six beagles. Ran rabbits all the time. I actually had the last one of his at my house. He passed away three years back. I haven’t been rabbit hunting in probably nine years. Daddy always just carried a stick. Loved to hear the dogs run.

You can’t beat it!! Dying tradition though forsure

Does a deer steak taste similar to beef steak (cow) and do you prepare and cook the same way ?
I wouldn’t take venison over a nice ribeye but I do enjoy venison. I usually cook a think slice of the backstrap on the grill - medium rare and it’s tasty. I also cube some of the shoulder or ham for venison roast with carrots and potatoes. I think people tend to over cook venison because they think its unclean or something. Overcooking a low fat cut will ruin it.
Of course being from the south, it’s awfully good if you flour and fry it.

Backstrap on the grill and cook it to a rare/med rare is amazingly good. But it’s hard to beat a fried piece of cube steak (fried in beacon grease) with gravy made from the left over grease.. I agree most folks over cook deer meat.

Now about my season… it was not very good on the gamelands this year for me. Now I did see a few bucks but most were small spikes and 1 2 1/2 year old 8 pointer that was just outside his ears but I let him walk hoping he will make it to next year. No big bucks were harmed from me this year ….. or seen.

I know I am quoting myself but it’s an addendum to above post.

My wife sent me a video two days after season of pie bald doe limping up through my front yard. She wasn’t moving very well. Last week I got a whiff of something while taking mule around field. I found her about thirty yards inside woods. Looked like she just laid down on high ground and passed. Not sure what caused it because coyotes and buzzards already been there. Hopefully it was peaceful.

I am always amazed at the ability of wild animals to survive injury. I fully expected this story to take a different turn and was surprised when you found the dead deer.

In shot an 8 point some years ago. I was set up in the middle of a few bedding areas when he showed up. He was going from one bedding area to the next - normal business for a November buck. I shot him and was in process of cleaning him when my friend noticed a strong smell coming from his mouth. We checked him and found his lower jaw was broken in two between the front teeth. No way this boy could have eaten yet he was still seeking does.

I had a nice 6 show up one day and he caught me moving. Wasn’t a shooter for me but later in the week my nephew shot him. When we recovered him he had a open wound in his shoulder. Didnt look like a bullet wound but was a 6 inch slit. He had rubbed the hair off - my guess was from scratching the wound which he eventually opened to relieve the pressure. Unbelievable amount of infection. Deer was just going about his business simply because he had no other choice.

No safety net in the wild.

Anyone plan on going to the Dixie deer classic next week ? I haven’t been in like 35 years but I think I will ride up next weekend and check it out

Haven’t been back since I got my little buck scored back in 1996.
I could see him hanging back behind screens and not out on wall after they finished scoring him. There were people getting their picture taken with my deer!!! Told guy working out front to bring him out we were going home. That’s when Buckmasters booth stopped me and wanted to score him for their new system. I almost said no but glad I didn’t.

The show itself is a fun experience. Get to see a lot of stuff and nice deer. I just am old and crotchety I guess 😜

I have been to the DD Classic a couple of times over the last 10 or so years. Seems like there are substantially fewer deer hunting booths than in the past Definitely not what it was back in the 1980s. Lots of out of state outfitters.

Thank you.
I omitted rest of picture when I uploaded. Not ashamed of the army surplus pants but the porn mustache was just sad 😂😂😂
You still dragging that buck around?

I remember you passing through here on the way to the gun show in Hickory to show that buck off. Had it in the back of his truck…wuddn’t nothing but a carcass left… heck!… even the stink was gone!

Had blow flies stirred up….from here to Asheboro!😂😂😂

I’m totally done with gun shows .. the prices are absolutely ridiculous now.. just go to gunbroker if you are looking for something in particular. Only thing I have bought in the last 5 years was some M855a1 (it’s kinda hard to find )
