Rumors about a Bench-Clearing Fight between Plymouth and Columbia (Boys Basketball) the last game of regular season that may have disqualified both teams from their conference tournament. Would this also disqualify them from the NCHSAA 1A State Playoffs?

Talent is nice to have, but it takes effort and teamwork and coaching to win championships. Swain out-talented Franklin that year by a mile (and Robbinsville too)... but who brought home the ring?

Here are my Top Ten Teams with the Potential to win the State Championship:

1. Mt. Airy - WEST - They received their wakeup call from WSP this week. 6' 7" Mounce, Sparks, Arrington and crew will be focused and ready for a dogfight!

2. Winston Salem Prep - WEST - 6' 7" Williams, Williamson, Goodloe, Gynn, and a deep and physical bench will also be battle-tested!

3. Voyager Academy - EAST - Look for 6' 11" Virginia signee Jay Huff, 6' 7" Jones, Greene and company to get past East Carteret in the East.

4. East Carteret - EAST - Willis, Johnson, Garrison will lead this team far. Look for an fan-friendly, exciting showdown vs Voyager.

5. Cherokee - WEST - Talk about excitement...this team averages 90 points per game!

6. Hayesville - WEST

7. Avery County - WEST

8. Lincoln Charter - WEST

9. Trask - EAST

10. Gates County - EAST

I believe Mt. Airy, Winston Salem Prep, Voyager Academy and East Carteret are in a class by themselves, and two of these teams should face each other in a tremendously competitive State Championship!

Thanks to the Swain High School Athletics page on Facebook, here's the 16mm game film from the last game ever played (11/23/1979) at the old stadium on Schoolhouse Hill in Bryson City. A very different and much more intimate environment.

This was the 2nd round playoff game against East Lincoln. Swain went on to win their only 2A state title that year.

Welcome to the "dumpster fire" called South Stokes football Paul. Hall certainly does not have a bad resume' with 22 years of head coaching experience. Heard South's Principal Duggins who everyone that knows him knows he is a class act had a huge impact on getting Paul Hall. Best of luck coach!! There are some great people in the Walnut Cove area. Good football is possible as evident of the 2011 and 2012 years. Just not very likely as evident from all the other years including the past 3 seasons. Good luck!!!!

Starting around 4PM....

I want to thank all the Mount Airy people who made my first visit up nice. I enjoyed the game an got to meet the Bearman who does a great job with broadcasting there games live. Mount Clay Mounce is one of those kids who nobody really talks about but has big time game.
