Farback Friday (Franklin): the Panthers' only championship

It's been a long time us old guys remember the Pisgah, Sylva Webster playoff game that year as the best high school game ever played in Canton. The Streaters [Jimmy and Steve] against David Singleton and my bears.Bears down seventeen points in fourth quarter but still won 38-31.
Coach Shook as Coach Dyer were both assistants under Joe Compton.

First you need athletes, then you need coach. You cannot have a coach without athletes.

The really good coaches get the best out of their AVERAGE kids to give them the edge. Athletes sure help... but athletes without a good supporting cast end up as also-rans. Been there, seen that. And average kids with excellent coaching and attitude can do wonders. Swain 1979 is a prime example... not a real "athlete" in sight, but no weaknesses, either. That team had a good, solid player at every position (and the attitude... the whole team shaved their heads in camp and vowed not to grow their hair out again till they were state champs, a radical attitude to take even in the late '70s :) ), but nothing close to a superstar, and they ended up with the rings. Sounds like something similar happened in Franklin in '76.
