If I remember correctly watching Charlotte Catholic playing on TV I seen probably one of the sloppiest field due to rain. It’s been a while and I hope I’m telling the right game at the time. Concord vs South Iredell 2015 in the playoffs was another. What is your sloppiness and wettest game you seen.

Crest at Concord-glad Tre Harrison was playing for the good guys.

Crest at Greensboro Page-Crest o-line played one of the best games I've seen. I believe Jamie Smith was the QB and when it was over Smith still looked like he had just walked out of the locker room, his jersey was so clean.

That Crest / Concord game was played in a mud pit
No way they should have played that game but glad they did !
Worse condiotn field I have seen.

Owen High School’s Shuford field 1997 2nd round of playoffs vs Forest Hills. Rained from start to finish. Probably helped us because it neutralized Forest Hills speed and Owen got the win

I saw South Meck beat Kannapolis in 1981 or 1982 in a monsoon. I think the score was 6-0, there were more fumbles than points.

South Iredell at Concord Before Crest at Concord was a Pure mud pit and they did it on purpose bc there absolutely no rain that week vs South

Pisgah vs West Henderson. 2005. Absolute monsoon the whole game and some of the most boring football I've ever watched. 99% of the ballgame seemed like it was played on about 30 yards of the field and as many tackles caused by the conditions rather than the defense. Ended regulation 0-0. West scored a TD in OT ( maybe 2OT) to win 6-0. The stadium completely emptied about 5 seconds after West crossed the goal line just happy it was over. :D

You just unlocked a memory I had forgotten about. If I remember correctly that storm was the remnants of a hurricane or a tropical storm. Honestly that game should have never been played. Pisgah was top 5 in the state, had that vaunted passing attack with Jaynes and couldn’t do anything all night. Ironically, West had no passing attack and ended up winning on a TD pass. Go figure.

By the end of the game the field was completely under water and the visitor locker room was flooded. That drive home was the wettest I’ve ever been, I’m not sure the seats in my car ever dried out.

I was at that game. I'm a Forest Hills Alum. That is definitely the wettest and muddiest field I've ever seen. It definitely killed our speed. We had quick shifty backs and they couldn't do anything. That was a cold rain also. Poured all night. Owen had that big running back who just ran downhill in that mud and he couldn't be stopped. Can't believe I sat through that whole game freezing my butt off. It rained on our drive all the way back home. 😫

You nailed it. We were all shocked we were playing it bc it gave you all far more of a chance and took away a ton from our own playbook. And the decision ended up biting us in the butt.

What year was this?

2005 North Davidson at East Rowan. It was pouring before, during and after the game. The sidelines were a shin deep quagmire.

First possession, Coach Holcomb calls a go route for LJ Slaughter (RIP) who kept his footing while the defensive back slipped and went untouched for a 60 plus yard TD. Final was 21-6, sloppy game due to conditions but our running backs and offensive line found our footing better than theirs did.

Go on the bus after the game and went crazy when they told us Tabor got upset by West Forsyth. Tabor had OC Wardlow that year as a senior (four year starter at qb) and they were killing everybody so that was a shocker, though the conditions were definitely in WFs favor that night. Only rain and a stout Grimsley defense stopped Mt Tabor that year, which I saw in person at Jamieson Stadium.

2009 Brevard Memorial stadium. Had a late October moisture system come up from the gulf and sit over town for about a week. That week saw Middle school, varsity and youth league teams all play home games. By late Saturday when brevard college came out to play their game, the field was tore up so bad it looked like none of the players had feet because they sunk so deep into the mud and centers were more or less pitching the ball with their hand under the football back to the quarterback because laying it flat on the ground would allow it to sink so deep into the mud. By the end of the contest, you couldn’t make out the jerseys or helmets of either team and brevard took home the surprise W against a grounded Catawaba offense.

I remember that. These pictures are glorious. I’m fairly certain this was the game that was the deciding factor for Brevard High getting turf.

You are talking about James(The Tank) Lewis. That was my senior year. He was a load for sure

If I’m not mistaken that was your homecoming too. Or am I remembering that wrong?

I don't think it was but not 100%. My mind wants to say surely we would have postponed it if it were homecoming but then again it wouldn't be the first time we chose to defy logic.🤣

I may have been under the bleachers during halftime wringing out my socks, getting ready for the 2nd half.

East Gaston @ CREST, don't remember the year (early mid 90's). I was in charge of EG's footballs, by the middle of the 1st qtr every ball we had was water logged, even our practice balls. Entire game was played in a driving rain. EG won the game, last time we beat CREST.

Hurricane Hugo hit NC in the third week of September, 1989. Freedom and McDowell were supposed to play that Friday, which Wikipedia says was the day the hurricane made landfall. My recollection is that they played on the following Monday, after a weekend of rain. There were still showers falling the way I remember it and the field at McDowell was a wreck.
Nothing else even comes close.

2011 or 2012 Mooresville at Burns. Good steady rain the whole game.
We don’t talk about that game ever - When Mooresville was at Burns there not a cloud in the sky and they said there was lighting and there wasn’t n other shady stuff happen tbh game but I’m not getting into that

Idk if it rain or not when Burns was at Mooresville I don’t remember

It definitely rained that night. I don't remember if it started in the rain but if definitely started during the game. I honestly don't remember the lightning delay stuff but I'm not saying it didn't happen just don't remember it

As a fan:

We played at West Stanly in 2015 for the endowment game. We had to go down there first for some reason, left at 2:00 because of the traffic as we had to go through Winston, and it was getting cloudy and ugly. I was hoping we'd miss it but it started raining when we were warming up. I was very impressed by the stadium and the field, it was in top notch shape. The locker room literally opens up and your on the field, it was like in a movie when someone opens the door and they are in another world. Blew my mind lol.

The game started and the downpour got really, really bad. I was in the booth as I filmed the game, but it was about near impossible to film because their windows wouldn't open fully and the ones that didn't had rain all over them. We took a early 13-0 lead as they couldn't run the ball at all as that was their game that year. Had a stud of a RB but we shut him down pretty much all night besides when they scored off a botch we had. He was averaging over 200 yards a game and he barely got 90. Our RB got hurt and we had to run QB keeper all of the 2nd half because it was pouring so hard we couldn't pass and we were a pure Air Raid team. It was a wince and wait game that 2nd half. We won as we stopped their final drive with a fumble recovery. It shoulda been a scoop and score but our player took a knee for no reason. Nearly 10 years later it irks the heck out of me still. It was a 13-7 win that shoulda been either 19 or 20 to 7.

I was amazed at how determined WS was to play that night. I guess they figured it would be the only way they could stop us on offense was to play in the rain, we were averaging a good chunk of yards and we were a week off dropping nearly 60 on a horrendous Atkins team. I guess they figured the only way to win was to slow us down, but ironically it screwed them more. If it had been clear it woulda been a high scoring night for both. But I digress. Their field ended up getting torn to shreds bad by all the cleats. It was a super solid field heading in (looked like a small college field,) that was quite pretty to look at, and by the end of the night it looked like a cow pasture with holes open everywhere. I wouldn't even say cow pasture, it looked like where goats would be at.

Their coaches ended up admitting next year they had to hire equipment to run over the field to fix it after that game and it took months to repair. Never understood that decision, they shoulda made us wait until that Monday as we were off that next week. Hubris can kill you

The lightning was from a storm close by. The storm was not over us but when that lightning detector goes off they have no choice. The game itself was an absolute flag fest. It sucked on our side too. It took the momentum away from both teams.

1992 North Rowan at A.L. Brown 3rd round game was a mud-pit. I remember them bringing in helicopters to dry the field before the game. North won 14-12 in OT.

Fairmont had coach Jernigan and I think it was 2000. Every school in five counties called off their game that morning. Fairmont played St. Pauls. They had a fast running back named Sinclair. There was about 10 fans in the stands and the sidelines were four inches deep in water. Wet was defined that night.

1996 Western Regional Championship game at Greyhound Hollow in Statesville. It had been a wet few weeks, but nothing like the Red Tornadoes encountered that night. I and a few others have always wondered why one half of the field, from the 50 to the non scoreboard end zone was so much more wet and slick as the other side of the field. It didn't matter as the Red Tornadoes trudged their way to a 35-0 victory.
