With the play-offs starting next Friday, a question came to mind: What have been some of the most unlikely play-off runs over the years? Some that come to mind:

1A 1991 Rosewood Eagles. They entered the play-offs as #4 seed out of the Carolina Conference. They were 7-3. They upset 10-0 SWO in the 1st Round, defeated Columbia in the 2nd Round, upended 12-0 N. Duplin in the 3rd, and beat Gates Co. in the semifinals. They fell to Murphy in the title game.

3A 2003 High Point Central Bison. The Bison were a 10-seed in the west with a 7-3 mark. They proceed to make a run to the semifinals before falling to Crest.

4A 2010 Davie County War Eagles. They limped into the play-offs at 5-6. They wound up playing for a state title that December.

What are some other unlikely play-offs runs that come to mind?

2006 Clinton ended regular season 6-5 3rd in the ECC lost a lot of close games. #10 seed in the playoffs beat Greene Central in the 1st round beat ECC champion East Duplin in the 2nd round beat Bunn and Notre Dame signee Kerry Neal in the 3rd round beat Northside-Jax in the Eastern title game before falling to Dwight Jones and Cummings in the State Championship game

Definitely the 1998 North Edgecombe team in 1A for me. Made the playoffs as the last team to get in the 1A east bracket, seeded 16th with a 4-6 record. They went on the road to defeat the #1 seed, and at that time, if a 16 beat a 1, the 16 stole homefield advantage as long as they were alive. So throughout the rest of the playoffs, the lower seeded teams had to travel to #16 NE. NE took advantage and won, and won, and won. Made it to the championship game with an 8-6 record, before losing by 2 to Starmount. Finished 8-7.

That had to be fun for the fans.

Maybe western alamance in 2004. finished third in conference. Lost to reidsville 51-6 in regular season and came back and beat the rams in the semi finals 16-14 to go on to lose to charlotte catholic 14-7 in the state championship.

I was at that Charlotte Catholic game, Western Alamance threw a hail mary from mid field as time expired, the receiver caught the pass with his knees down in the end zone falling back into the field of play, the ball never crossed the plane and he was marked down about 1 foot out of the end zone. Ballgame.

2016 South Point 3A had 4 regular season losses went on to win the Championship.
-In 2007 Lincolnton was 1-4 after five games which included a loss to South Point, and would go onto to win the small 2A title.

-During South Point's 2016 3A championship season that you mention here one of their four losses was to Lincolnton.

- In 2015 South Point would lose to Rocky Mount in the 3A championship game.

-In 2016 South Point with four losses would go on to play Rocky Mount again avenging the previous year's loss.

-In 2007 one of Lincolnton's four losses was to Shelby.

Just a little trivia.:)

The Rosman tigers of 1997 had a great run to the state championship in 1A…beat Albemarle first round, beat #1 Thomasville second round, beat a very good Cumming team, and another team to make it to the state championship where they came up just short against North Edgecombe…they weren’t fancy run the wishbone offense with some tough gritty kids…all the teams they beat were top 10 teams in the rankings

Thomasville in 2011 and 2012. 2011 lost 4 out of 5 games to start the year and lost to central Davidson (although later changed cuz central had ineligible player) and went all the way to the 4th round of the playoffs and lost to Lincolnton. 2012 we entered the playoffs with a losing record and went to the 3rd round losing to East Lincoln in a decently close game. The dogs still ended the year with a losing record that year despite winning two playoff games and getting revenge on Lincolnton 55-14 I believe

The 2004 Thomasville team that won the 1A championship was a surprise…wasn’t expecting much from them in the playoffs won their first round game easily then went on the road and beat a really good Polk co team, beat # 1 Albemarle at their place, can’t remember the other teams they beat to get to the championship, but they were pretty big underdogs in the state championship game against a very strong Wallace Rose Hill team that had a stout defense anchored by Nate Irving at LBer…Thomasville won by 1 point

Thomasville was a 5 seed. They beat a #16 South Stokes in 1st Rd. Then beat a #4 Polk County in 2nd Rd. They then beat #1 Albemarle in 4th followed by beating a #2 Maiden in 5th. Wallace Rose was a 2 seed out of the East.

Mr Lincolnton, that was my favorite SP team of all time. I’ve been going to Raider games since 1974. I’ve seen some amazing games played. I’ve seen wonderful individual performances. That team in 16 came together following a bad start better than any one ever seen in high school. Several higher seeded teams left the playoffs extremely disappointed that year. A very fun year for SP players and fans.

SPRaiders78, they sure were special.Somebody somewhere in Rocky Mount must have felt pretty good about their chances that year after beating SP the previous year, but the Raiders seemed to get better, especially on defense, and gain more momentum in every game. When it was time for the state championship they were blazing.
