Thomasville Football

Very good question. Unless it’s chalked up to mass hysteria, I’d say there’s a common thread.
Trey Ray is a good hire. But in all fairness, I read in one of the area papers that he lost virtually all of last year’s team to graduation. Wish him well.
I don’t think all principals are gone, but the high school principal retired.
Principal retired and the two assistants' left the system. The winning boys programs football, mens basketball and wrestling were senior heavy and lost really good coaches/staffs for a variety of reasons (Admin change, retirements, AD Retired, HR, new board, teacher shortages, discipline, other opportunity, lack of HR/board taking action to replace those coaches in a timely manner, etc). They knew well in advance of these openings and sat on them with zero process in place or actioning. As the old saying goes, "a failure to plan is planning to fail".

Thank you Wow. You certainly have insight into all of that.

I would hope so, but they lost a lot of seniors last year, not to mention the loss of the qb who just tore his acl.
That partly explains the lack of offense against WD, and last game. Didnt know the QB got hurt.

Trey will be fine, he did well at Forsyth Country Day. However, we might take some lumps just like in football this year.

This is true
Indeed it is, but looking at the roster that returns and having travelled to see yall at tville play a few times, just because I think it’s intriguing, you still have some monsters and talent, though the loss of the qb is tough. It seems like it will come down to scheme and player development which is probably why Ferguson seemed to shine. Your teams always seemed to peak at the right time under her and have remarkable grit at the end of the year. That south stokes game was a masterclass in resilience and coaching despite the loss.

I also wonder how things go going from a private school with a lot of talent…a lot…to the public school.

It’ll be interesting to see Ferguson’s teams at Ledford too. I saw last night that, with the exception of her post, her team is pretty young…we at north enjoy beating them but I’m not sure they continues for long.

Does tville play Ledford this year? What an atmosphere that would be!

That south stokes game last year was incredible. The Bishop vs Thomasville game two years ago was also an amazing game.

The stokes game I saw, I only caught the ending of the bishop game and what I saw was incredible. If that point guard makes an open layup or at least bleeds the clock for a few seconds, they go past eastern Randolph in the final four. In my opinion. Those were the two games, and one a couple of years ago when I caught tville playing Salisbury or north Rowan and the first play was a dunk, where I thought: this woman can flat coach. I’ve never seen teams, like Tvilles last year go from not great to absolutely beating anyone any night of the season.

Wish she had stayed at tville and not come to our conference, but it’ll be entertaining watching these “good ole boys” get rattled by her. I do find plenty of pleasure in watching entrenchment of any sort get uncomfortable.

It makes sense she could coach though, I suppose, looking her resume up.

Knowing by whom and how Ledford was coached last year, it genuinely couldn’t be any different of a style or approach. They had an extremely slow, pass it 15 times, only certain kids had permission to shoot style of ball with nearly zero defensive intensity. Sheesh the difference a year will make I presume.

Plus we all know they have talent, our kids have played travelled ball with those kids. It’s just not born itself out that way…yet.

I know exactly what you’re talking about. They very well could have won the game if they had made the layup or just wasted the clock. No way Bishop should be playing against public schools. They obviously recruited their players.

Any chance we still make the playoffs if we win the last two games?
Probably. 1A typically has some teams with very poor records that make the playoffs. Very unlikely to have a home game.
I still predict that we won’t beat Lexington. But should beat East. Neither team has coaching but as usual, Thomasville has better athletes.

Lost which coach
Not going to name folks on here. Anyone interested can do their own research. But if you know which coaches had an altercation on the sidelines at West Davidson, that’s a start.
The search on the middle school assistant principal should be much easier.
School board is calling the shots. Anybody who thinks otherwise isn’t being realistic.

Yeah that's what I was thinking. Recall some winless and 3 win teams make it in as a 24 seed over the years.

Lexington is very athletic and has 17 seniors and the coach is turning them around. Lexington and Tville have discipline issues showboating, holding, trash talking, late hits and cheap shots so who knows how that game will go. Probably the team with the most penalties or turnovers.

Wouldn't be surprised if we pulled the upset but likely lose.

Noticed a increase in discipline issues since last year and carried over this year. That's concerning.

Coaching is about more than tactics, X’s and O’s. It’s about managing kids and everything they bring to the table from home and all other aspects of their lives. The coaching staff there is unfamiliar with and not skilled at hardly any of the sides of coaching; so it stands to reason they’d have discipline issues.

Also, I went to a game recently and I agree. It’s not just behavioral either. It’s discipline in the game itself from a football aspect. Totally different team than last year

My question is will this lack of discipline be seen in the other sports throughout the year? Considering their criteria for a good candidate seems to have had nothing to do with a history of success on and off the field but rather other factors, is this a hug shock?

It might. Some of them play basketball and other sports. It's young group still learning how to win. We lost alot of seniors last year and many good players on offense after the 22' season. The loss of kids like Carolina, Lucky, number 9, and 5 in the backfield is hurting us right now.

For as coach George and staff, know alot of people ready for them to go but rather see what happens next two games and if we make the playoffs. Had too many coaching changes over the years, got lucky with Robertson but then he was forced out for Gillespie? You or someone else feel free to tell me what happened with Robertson, seemed like we were trending up with him. Gillespie and Dick Cline were an upgrade but now their retired, other coaches and teaches left. The high school needs renovation or added on since they cant build a new one. Pretty sure we losing kids to Oak Grove cause of that, its the new shiny school on the block, cant blame them. Fans are mad about West Davidson but we lost 4 straight to Ledford, though they had 3A kids from Forsyth county and High Point. Also lost 4 to East Davidson, all at home. It was a matter of time before West got their super bowl. Players aren't as focused as what we were in the 90s, and mid 2000s.

My point is there too much going on to pin on the football coaches. Yes they share some blame but it's much bigger than them.

I suspect basketball will have good discipline with Trey Ray as the coach. He won’t put up with it.

Doug Robertson was not forced out at all. He chose to go to a 4A program that had a history of success. I love Doug and think he’s an excellent coach. But he does have a case of wanderlust and seems to always be looking for a challenge to rebuild. He usually succeeds. Dickie Cline is another coach who has moved around quite a bit. Not sure he was an upgrade and he’s come and gone from Thomasville multiple times.

I don’t think Thomasville kids are going to Oak Grove, unless there’s a physical move. Davidson County has really cracked down. Plus real estate in the Oak Grove district is expensive. Kids are leaving Thomasville City Schools, usually around middle school age. Many reasons, but most are about educational quality and safety. There are 16 teaching vacancies at Thomasville Middle School. Last year, most teachers in the math and English departments at the high school were uncertified subs. Those kinds of circumstances cause parents to leave if they can.

You’re right, it’s not just the football coaches. It starts at the top…with the superintendent and school board.

I said i was going to leave it alone but im going to say this and then I really will leave it alone. Rather we get rid of George or not, everyone who is expecting Thomasville to be the Thomasville of the past might want to go ahead and jump ship. We have a couple decent years coming up with the freshmen and a few really good middle schoolers and then we will experience some darker days then we are currently experiencing. Our youth coaches are currently forfeiting games mid game due to the lack of competitiveness.

That’s frightening. Here at North Davidson that’s not the case. Sad. I spoke to a friend who works at Ledford and he said that though their football is remarkably bad in terms of skill level, their basketball numbers appear to be quite high. His statement was that the new boys ball coach at Ledford, though they were bad in he past few years, will have an embarrassment of riches in terms of motivation, talent, and numbers. And it’s all 100% coming out of the youth numbers. The kids leagues in Ledford and oak grove and ND are quite populated. It begs the question why not in tville?

Nobody will get rid of Coach George and I certainly don’t support that. The damage was done to the program when they delayed the hiring process until the whole program got behind. That’s not Coach George’s fault.
Unfortunately the people responsible have zero background in athletics and no appreciation for how athletics improve the overall school system. Hopefully the superintendent will step up and do the right thing regardless of his bosses.
Thomasville Parks and Rec have had record numbers in baseball, basketball, football soccer and cheerleading. Not sure why forfeits would be necessary.
Edited to say that there have been some defections to a High Point AAU team this year. AAU and travel ball will be the downfall of school sports at a lot of places. No AAU should ever be allowed during that sport’s regular school season.

100% correct. The coaches of these organizations only care about, How much money can I make or can I advance my own child.

There is a current D1 recruit at Oak Grove that should be attending Thomasville I believe. He has offers from UGA, UNC, Florida, FSU, South Carolina and more.

If you know anything about Thomasville football history you will know who I am talking about when you see the young man's last name.

the aau team they play for isnt exactly winning either. And the forfeit wasnt due to lack of players. They basically quit during the game because they were getting beat so bad. But I agree wholeheartedly, the AAU league will definitely be the downfall for school sports. More particularly the smaller schools.

Him and a few others all transferred out during middle school. The others are playing for High Point Christian currently where he also played as a freshman but they all left together

I think I know who you’re talking about but don’t know the situation.

What I do know is this. There are three ways that someone could go from Thomasville to any county school.
A physical move of residence, including going to live with a guardian. Be the child of a faculty member at the county school. Or lie, especially about address. Though it was allowed at one time, county schools no longer accept transfers with a release from the city. Haven’t in several years. Folks aren’t leaving Thomasville in droves to go to another traditional public school unless they meet one of those three conditions.

Thomasville loses to West Davidson for the FIRST TIME in history. I hate to say it, but the program has reached a new low. I believe at this point you have to look for a new coach to take over the program. Sad that Thomasville football has fallen off this far in only a year.
I was at this game, consider me shocked at how bad things have gotten.

Be interesting to see the attendance. If homecoming is any indication, it will be much less than traditionally. The long time reserved seat section was virtually empty.
