Many people have been saying it for years and many are now starting to see it because its been a solid 4-5 years now that its been happening. The 4A playoffs are starting to get very boring and its because its so so top heavy and predictable. Some rules need to be put into place from a state level that is for all school boards/districts. Something has to give, its killing the competitiveness of our sport. NIL will be the final nail in the coffin. Let kids be kids.

Mainly, I agree with you. Transferring and open enrollment needs to stop. Open enrollment in Forsyth County needs to stop. What has happened to Carver HS football since the early 2000s is a travesty. Pretty much all due to open enrollment and kids wanting to go to Walkertown or East Forsyth. I have said it 100 times and I will say it again. It is 2024 and social media rules the day. If you are a very good player at W. or S. Guilford and your team is lousy, college recruiters will still find you and woo you. Play at the school that is in your district. If they are not good, then work hard, hit the weight room and do all you can to make them better. Of course, I realize there can be exceptions. Take Garinger HS in Charlotte. Just an awful, awful football program that doesn't seem to have much interest in getting better. If the school, administration and coaches don't want to put in the effort to get better, I can sort of see why a talented football player at Garinger may want to go to another school. Facilities can also come in to play. Carver HS in Winston has been around forever and is old. Atkins and Walkertown are newer, nicer, more modern schools. It is understandable why some kids would want to go to a shinier more modern HS as opposed to a place like Carver. PagePirates44, I know you have mentioned how Grimsley was just a ho hum program for the most part before their current dominant run. I wonder how much of that is due to transfers and kids that should have played at other schools?

Page is back doing the same thing Grimsley is doing which is why they will be good again soon. Page did the same things prior to Grimsley being good. They fell off due to coaching changes so now we have to hear this this same stuff get repeated every year from fans of teams who aren’t title contenders at the moment. Transfers and recruiting has always happened in NC and it will not change, honestly it will only get worse.
I do think there should be a system put in place so that it’s even across the board. Either everyone has open enrollment or nobody should. You can’t stop transfers and people finding loop holes in the system though.

Yes, Transfers have always been a thing, but it used to be more spread out and random for different reasons. Now its just blatant and is concentrated and funneled to a handful of schools, this is not good for the health of HS ball.

The past week has been people talking about Weddington, Hough, Grimsley (and maybe East Forsyth) and no other games even matter. Is that how it should be? No, I don't think so. Anyone remember the DARK HORSE conversation? There was always a team or two who people thought had a outside chance to win it all. that conversation is DEAD.

Also, Page did not do the same thing prior to Grimsley being good. Gillespie did not run his program like that. There may have been some guys come over here and there, but it was not near the same level of volume of how its happening these days. Its apples to oranges.

Looking at recent playoff results, it’s clear that certain programs have established such a stronghold that it feels like they're practically guaranteed a spot in the finals. This not only discourages teams from smaller districts but also impacts the overall development of young athletes who may feel that their hard work won’t be enough to compete. The essence of high school sports should be about teamwork, growth, and fair competition, not just a few elite programs pulling ahead financially and athletically.

Main problem with the "transfer portal" is the lack of regulation. Either you can or can't do it, and there are coaches angry that Forsyth County can legally and no one else cannot legally.

I honestly feel like it should be open enrollment and once a school is full, you can't transfer there unless it meets a true hardship situation across the board. Rules are best enforced when there are less blurred lines, and right now lines are blurry as hell for the vast majority of the state.

I like the transfer portal and there is no reason to do away with it.... kids should be able to pick the school that they would like to attend, East Forsyth has a lot of Walkertown players, it's like a farm team and they get noticed, more scouts at East Forsyth and it's "4A" ...the highest level of North Carolina HS football. Can't blame any kid who transfers.
West Forsyth has a lot of transfers too including there star QB. Everybody is on the same level of playing field. It's the same rules for all....if not, that's on the county you play in...change your county policy if your serious about football.

It's not the same rules for everyone! Lol

Implement open enrollment across the state and keep it moving. They'll never be able to crack down fairly, across the State. Some areas are more aggressive about movement amongst kids, other have bigger fires to put out and don't care. There is definitely noteworthy treatment in Charlotte. They'll do home visits at school A in Charlotte, the school that has over 35% of their team that live out of school area. Business as usual. Just let kids go where they want to go and move on.

At the end of the day, it needs to be an even playing field. Some districts are very strict, and some are wide open.

Hough and Grimsley are the examples of schools being a transfer destination and they only have one title which was Grimsley’s 2020 Spring title. It took a heck of a comeback against Butler for them to win.

Weddington won last season but lost twice during the regular season. Chambers did start to get some West Charlotte and Mallard Creek kids but they weren’t looked at as destination like Hough. Myers Park did start to become a destination school too and didn’t have anything to show for it.

I think the transfer stuff is a bit overblown in my opinion because it’s not translating into championships. You can make an argument with Chambers but I don’t think people viewed them the same as Grimsley or Hough.

OK someone who has seen both sides of that sword here is what I think and here is what coaches say that benefit and what coaches say that it hurts.

My experience is this if you are a have not the transferring makes things almost impossible to fix. You lose kids and then you have to replace kids. It messes with team chemistry sand cohesion and you always seemed out gunned. On the flip side of that it's awesome to get a player to replace what you may have lost or get a kid to bolster your lineup.

What coaches say that benefits from transfers( our school is better , the kids need to leave that type of environment and we provide that at our school).

What coaches say that lose from it- I can not build I feel that we are constantly under fire and losing kids.

Look the cats out of the bag. I do not know what can be done or will be done to fix this. DO you suspend any coach a year that is found recruiting per offense? Do you fine the coach that is found guilty? Or do you just look the other way and let it happen. With the General Assembly pushing to create (Separate but equal education 2.0) I think that your charters/Private schools will be recruiting heavy. So again I think we are entering a era of we are a have and we have all and you are a have not and you have nothing and accept it for what it is. Again wait until charters schools and private schools have all the top end talent that time is coming. Also with threats of cutting the department of education and many schools having less $$$$ to work with I see bigger problems on the horizon than athletes transferring

I agree Private schools, not so much charter schools will thrive when they start paying players. They will get a lot of the talent. Right Now, Grimsley QB Faison is not getting any NIL money and I know they are serious changes to policies in Feb... he will get paid next year.

You already see that happening with privates. I don't think Charlotte Country Day does, but i believe Providence Day certainly does.

My son was in an awful program for two years. He worked hard and tried but it was simply sucking the life out of him. We then applied for an open choice option which only allowed a handful of transfers annually and was able to transfer to a great program. He loved his time there.

There is value in being at a great program. He had to work harder because there was more competition. There is no perfect solution but the playing field needs to be the same.
NH has had open enrollment for years and they have lived on picking up 3-10 qualify kids a year. They won a state championship in 2017 and they had 7 starters who lived outside their district. Now look at NH since Laney hired Coach Little an

Coach, your former school of Parkland is an example of a have not. I think W. Forsyth's QB started out at Parkland and then transferred. How is Parkland supposed to get better when this sort of thing happens? You somehow got Parkland moving in the right direction. But now it is a disaster there, again. Not sure how they improve when kids that go there with a decent level of talent are going to run out on the Mustangs and look to go to West, East or Tabor.

Well, that is where I can feel for a kid - when they are in a situation like your son was in. Look at Garinger HS in Charlotte. What is their losing streak up to now? If a school, the administration and the coaches don't seem to care about getting better and a kid has some talent, it would be awful to play football at Garinger. Can't blame a kid going to a school like wanting to go somewhere with better coaching and an administration that wants success in football.

It also more than winning and losing. Some programs are simply not good environments to be in. I honestly never expected any coach to raise my son but I surely don’t want him in a toxic environment that goes against many things we are trying to teach him.

I don’t have all the answers and this is a very difficult situation. I think the AD needs to be at practices and make sure things are being done right and that there is a good environment. Many kids will stay if they are being taught and they feel valuable and are being treated with respect. That’s the foundation. If it’s not then get someone else in there. I don’t mind giving a coach many years to turn things around if the foundation is being laid. If not, it’s a waste of time so get another coach.

At the end of the day, kids are going to go where they think will give them the most exposure and showcase there position. It could be that they don't like the Coach's playbook. Or some kids don't want to set on the bench because of a upperclassmen in their way. Truth be told those students and their families are looking out for one person and that is that teen. We see it in NCHSAA Baseball with a Pitcher for example. Or a Soccer player, maybe Tennis and Track and Field. Private School like Greensboro Day in Basketball or Piedmont Classical or Burlington School have pulled so many kids for Area Triad High Schools going 20 deep with players, Page, Dudley, Smith, NW, Northern has a 1 in 10 chance in beating them. I don't like it, but those students don't owe our communities anything with loyalty. They looking out for Me, Myself & I!!! Just like the NCAA!!!

So it's good for you and your family but not the Grimsley, Hough, EF, or Weddingtons of the world? It's so hypocritical when people complain about transfers when we allow and encourage it in all aspects of life but when it comes to football it's a problem.

Kids transfer for band, academics, country club sports, closer to mom/Dads job, and many other reasons but we only care about football. why? Let's have a statewide investigation on academic residency fraud.....

FOOTBALL is king in America. So folks will do what they think is best for their family/situation. Most bet upon sport is NFL, highest rated college sport =football, most participated HS sport = football. Most college scholarships given =Football, most unbiased physical attribute sport= football. Most attended sport=football. sport that pays the bills and builds school/community morale = football. There is no simple way to police the beast that is football.

We have families moving across the state legally and across state to play football. Families lying to move illegally city to city. teams getting booted from playoffs for illegal players in SC. In Charlotte they just do it as 9th graders now to avoid the extra scrutiny. they put paperwork in the 2nd semester of 8th grade year. Kids putting up polls to vote on what HS they should attend. No turning back just improve your school and be attractive to Families

Port is quick to take jabs at New Hanover but the problem is the school board will not draw districts to fill New Hanover. I chuckle at the parent outcry’s during attempts to redraw districts.

Make no mistake, NHHS is the class of Wilmington highschool athletics. We overwhelm all the other Wilmington schools in state championships across the board, even in years PRIOR to open enrollment. In an attempt to help enrollment, the board organized the Lyceum program at New Hanover. Lyceum is an advanced academic program. It boosted enrollment but there are more band members than athletes.

Hoggard is the preferred district for real estate in Wilmington. Even with open enrollment, NHHS has 400 to 900 less kids than other Wilmington public schools. Why, because it’s an inner city school. I live in the Hoggard district and sent my daughter to New Hanover. According to her, it was the best decision she ever made and I agree. You should have heard the collective gasps of the parents in our neighborhood!!

So rather than complain, just allow the board to assign kids to fill the school. Problem solved - and I bet New Hanover will continue to athletically outperform the other Wilmington schools.

Yes Parkland is for sure a have not school. The thing is the guy that is the head coach there was a big piece of us getting that program headed in the right direction. He(Coach Sharpe) is a great coach and fantastic human being but Parkland will never have what East Forsyth, Mt. Tabor, Reagan, West Forsyth , Reagan, North Davidson, Oak Grove has and never will. To be honest Parkland will never have what RJR has. When we took over in 2013 that year we counted 19 players starting at other schools that year that were in the Parkland district. 19 that's almost a full 2 platoon team. It is still going on and since we are using Parkland as an example it will continue as long as kids have a path to another school. For the record guys here was our record at Parkland the 6 years that I was the head coach and Coach Sharpe was the Offensive coordinator
0-11, 0-11, 3-8, 7-5, 6-6, 11-2. It can be done but to be honest we had kids "Transfer in" from Carver, North Forsyth, RJR and a kid come back from North Davidson. So again another example of one school taking from another.

Good morning, y'all! Long time listener, first time caller here.
The root cause is a lack of stability in the coaching ranks. Kids leave programs when they change coaches, schemes, programs all the time. Look at schools that DON'T lose kids. They have STABILITY. If you want stability, pay the coaches a competitive wage. That way, coaches can put down roots, implement, and see through their vision. Why, as a player, would I stay when I don't know who my coach is going to be from year to year?
Second part of the problem, is not everyone is playing by the same set of rules. You have some, or at least 1, LEA that allows open enrollment for a period of time during the year. How is that a level playing field with other LEAs throughout the state? You also have different academic eligibility requirements from LEA to LEA. Again, uneven playing field.
In summary, it's a top-down problem. Unless those things, among others, are addressed, the portal will remain wide open.

You are teaching. Never understood the demographics of Wilmington area schools. You just made me a fan of NHHS. Good luck vs. Pinecrest.

AGREE!!!!! CFB is near ruined and will continue to get worse. HS football is next.

It seems like NC and other states should adopt a playoff system AZ has. They have a playoff and a champion for ach classification but only 1 state champion. These top teams in their two highest classifications- 6A and 5A play in the open playoffs for a true state champion.

Kids transfer for band, academics, country club sports, closer to mom/Dads job, and many other reasons but we only care about football. why? Let's have a statewide investigation on academic residency fraud.....
I have never complained about kids transferring. I simply think the it should be the same for everyone.

I have never taken a jab for NH taking transfers. My point here is that I wish Hoggard to easily take kids who want to transfer there. Of course NH will gladly take what they can get. I think the playing field should be equal. If NH is as great as you say then their ADMs should be much higher.
I take jabs at NH because I’m a Hoggard grad. 😂
