Rumour From Haywood County........ Is It True?

Only in the hills of NC would people think that for a 90% black football team, race shouldn't be ONE of the factors in finding a head coach.

-Black coaches do matter, as in black head coaches.

-To the fool who implied I don't know what black assistant coaches look like, AFTER your friend had to break it down for you what I meant, nice try.

"Most Qualified" is a long used out for not choosing a black head football coach. For a school like Asheville, a "Qualified" black coach should be considered a front runner.

Ask your black friends their opinion?

Disagree with me, but use facts. Name calling is when you lose the argument.

Let's break this idiots "thinking" down for a minute.
Billy wants a qualified black guy coaching Asheville as the front runner because he's black. And we all just agree that he's crazy. But if Billy was asking for a qualified white guy coaching say, Robbinsville, as the front runner based off the fact he was white.... Haha. Seriously? The moderators would shut the thread down. Block his user name from being used ever again. And POTUS would be singing in a church in South Asheville this Sunday.

How bout we leave race out of it Billy and just hire the best coach. Period.

OK Billy, if you insist on using facts...

1. If "90%" of our football team is black and we have 14 white kids on the roster that would mean our team is dressing out over 100 kids on Friday nights. Even common core math can't explain that one.

2. You said a "black" head coach should be considered a front runner because "90%" of the team is black." So using that logic and considering that only 28% of the United States is black, why don't we have a white president? After all, you yourself stated that if one color is the majority, a person of that same color should be in charge, right?

3. "Most Qualified" is a long used out for not choosing a black head football coach." Really? In the past five years Asheville has had an African American Mayor, an African American Asheville City Schools Superintendent, an African American Asheville City Schools Assistant Superintendent, an African American Asheville High School Principal, and hired numerous African American teachers and assistants. So why does it make sense that we are purposefully keeping an African American coach from leading our football team?

Your argument doesn't hold water Billy. Not only that, but by bringing the race card into this discussion you are intentionally setting up our next head coach for failure in the event that he or she turns out to be black. Having been a part of Asheville High Cougar football for many, many years and many, many generations, I resent you turning this into a race issue. Having worn Cougar uniforms in the past and playing under African American coaches such as Coach Hammonds and having African American team mates I can assure you the only time race has ever been a factor on any of those teams is when parents or fans bring it up. It never starts with the kids.

Oh, and BTW, I did "ask all of my black friends" and they said if they ever met you in person they'd smack you so hard your mama would get a concussion. :)

I am no Asheville fan by any stretch of the imagination but I do have a lot of respect for the program they have there. I don't care what color a coach is, if he can coach then hire him. If he can't coach then don't. I think one of the things a coach needs to be able to do today is COMMUNICATE. If he can do this better than the next guy he has a big advantage getting across to today's young people, both black and white. Young people today are vastly different than just 10 years ago. A coach that can get through to the youth of today is a special person and should be held onto by all means.

Billy, nobody at Asheville High cares about your opinion. There have been two or three African-American men over the years that have been offered the Head football coaching job at the high but for one reason or another they turned it down.

Speaking of the legendary Coach Hammonds and black coaches, I found this article from Keith Jarrett of the citizen times from 2005:

Coach Hammonds Has Made Big Mark On Area Youths

ASHEVILLE – Do African-American and other minority athletes need coaches of color to relate to?

In an era where more and more professional athletes are failing as role models, teachers and coaches at the high school level are often in a position to provide guidance and serve as examples for young athletes.

Gene Hammonds has been the head baseball coach and assistant football coach at Asheville High for 35 years, and many current and former players use the term “ father figure” to describe the African-American mentor.

“ It ‘ s always important to have coaches who can relate to kids, and race is one of the ways we can relate, “ Hammonds said. “ You can ‘ t replace the experience of having been there and knowing what these kids need or what they are feeling. “

“ He is an inspiration of mine, “ said Smoky Mountain High athletic director Al “ Mutt “ DeGraffenreid, 51, who played at Reynolds High and is believed to be the first African-American head football coach in WNC since integration when he was hired at Cherokee High in 1999.

“ Growing up, coach Hammonds was somebody I wanted to be like. He was out there and showing that it could be done. “

“ Coach Hammonds was somebody we looked up to, someone who was like us and that we could relate to, “ said Mickey Ray, an African-American star when he played for Asheville in the early ’80s and a current assistant coach on the Cougars’ staff.

“ If you ‘ re an African-American kid, it’s just easier to approach a coach who is African-American, “ Ray said.

The ability to mentor kids and serve as a role model is a major reason cited by coaches and administrators for the need to increase the number of minorities in coaching.

“ There is something to be said for having more minorities in leadership roles to serve as role models in areas where there are more minorities in the school system, “ said Asheville City Schools superintendent Robert Logan, who oversees a system of 3,819 students that is 37 percent African-American.

Erwin High football coach Chris Brookshire, who is white, has six African-American players on his team but no minorities among his 10 assistant coaches.

“ Coaches should be good role models and serve as examples to all their players, regardless of race, “ said Brookshire.

Chapel should have never left East, the program was going strong, The kids and fans wanted him to stay. Look at East now worst program in the mountains. Pisgah don't have the athletes to be a contender in 3A, they can compete in 2A. Give Chapel talent he can win, if he goes to Asheville watch out.

I've just been informed by a reliable source that the next head football coach of Asheville High has been chosen. It's a half black, half white, half Hispanic, half Asian lesbian transgender pigmy woman/man who was raised in a Native American village by socialist parents who were both fans of the spread quadruple option power run offense. The half time shows starting next year will be a hippy drum circle and we will no longer be keeping score.

So you reckon maybe he saw it coming? He had some players staring at rape charges which had an effect on the whole school. East has never been consistent as a program. They have had the occasional phenominal athlete- Angram, Davis, et al, and a recent bevy of linemen, but for every good year, they'll put together some mediocre ones in between.

Look, there is no community stronger about its football than the Canton-Bethel-Thickety Triplex. Any coach would love to work at Pisgah with the support they have. Are their challenges? Sure. Some of the "railbirds" will always know more than you do about football, coaching, and life in general. You aren't going to have a bunch of 100m dash champions lining up on offense for you. The East Flat Rock community would never bring the passion that Pisgah does/can.

That being said, Asheville would be a tough job to turn away from but who says its even open? They do have a nice facility but could use an honest to goodness field house. The city school system seems to be well funded and I'm sure can pay well.

Frankly if Western can ever pony up more cash for assistant coaches, you will probably find him over there. They had a shot at him before but HC at Pisgah pays better than AC at WCU.

If that head coaching job at Asheville is indeed open I hope to God whoever makes the final decision takes their time. There will be a ton of applicants from in state, out of state and even within the current coaching staff that will be considered. I have heard some rumors that a coaching search has begun already but seeing as how Coach Wilkins hasn't made an announcement about retiring, how could other coaches even know to apply?
The head coaching position is clearly a sought after position. Nobody in the WNC mountains produces more TALENT each year than Asheville High. Nobody. It would be interesting to see a coach like Chapel coach at Asheville high with more talent than hes ever had. It would also be interesting to see a coach like former nfl Super Bowl champ and Asheville alum Leonard Little be the next coach. Maybe former NFL player and Asheville alum John Avery. Maybe former NFL player and Asheville alum Ray Roberts. If the job is open, I'd like to see the administration look as far as they had to look for a qualified candidate, maybe an assistant from Independence Mallard Creek Butler or Shelby. Somebody who has coached in big games and coached tons of talent. I think all the fans want to know if there even is a head coaching vacancy and I know all of us would be eager to know who the next coach would be as soon as possible. However, I think the longer the potential coaching search took, the more time they are taking picking the right guy. We will see what happens. Long way to football season.

I heard it was Alabama. Nick Saban wants to coach at Pisgah because of all of the support there, although he is nervous that many of the fans know more than he does.

Agree with you Pisgah has great fan support better then East. The trouble at East and some higher ups is why he left. But Chapel has accomplish more at East then Pisgah, East usually have more athletes then Pisgah. If he does leave, Pisgah will have no problem finding a good coach.

Coach Wilkins is 100% retiring announcement to be made in a couple weeks.let the rumours begin......

I hear Josh Brooks will be the new man at Smoky too! Bringing brothers with him. Napert is on the way out as soon as he lands an asst. collegiate job.
Tuscola will be looking for a new coach before Pisgah will. Any wagers?
Will Erwin try to promote from within? Don't fool yourselves Leicester, Sexton is done.
Will the D coordinator get a shot at the Asheville job?
Is Frady on the hot seat or does Enka care if they win a game?
you can bet the farm and the animals brooks will be returning to sylva no time in the immediate or distant future...that's not even a rumor that's a joke,,,just like smokys program

Since we are all speculating, I heard a rumor that coach Wilkins is announcing his retirement and they are announcing the new coach on the same day. I hope that's not true because how could a good candidate apply for the job if he doesn't know it's open? I assume best case scenario coach Wilkins would announce it relatively soon and then the search would begin and conclude in a month or two?

Either they hiring inside the coaching staff, or they reached out to someone and they keeping it on the low.

funny if you want a coach who will get absolutely maximum effort out of his kids whos teams will be disciplined w few turnovers and few penalties then maybe canton isn't where you should be looking but instead maybe you should be looking in franklin..theyve only averaged over 10 wins a yr for the past 5 yrs ...not saying he would leave franklin but its funny his name never comes up and his head to head record vs chappell speaks for itself

True Brooks has done a good job. Also the offense would not have to change a bit from Wilkins'. They are both I formation and heavy run.

Franklin and Asheville have very few things in common both on and off the football field. I think brooks will stay in Macon county.

I doubt Brooks is interested in the Asheville job but Asheville and Franklin are almost identical on offense.

If Asheville is going to get a new coach, then they need to get a NEW coach. There are going to be a dozen or more guys applying for that job that are more qualified to be the next head coach then anybody else currently on our coaching staff.

Although a Charlie metcalf offense would be fun to watch. He has a brilliant offensive mind.

Tuscola head baseball coach announces resignation today.
He knew the game really well but he did not know how to manage people. Constant negativity will not result in a coach getting the best out of his players. I hope the school makes a good hire. There is some decent talent coming up in the program.
