Just joking when I’m saying this. But heard they were still scraping the some players of TCU off the field this morning.
If you just count Georgia extra points they win 8-7.

They've upgraded the roster and filled some holes, which is what the portal is for. Tez, Gainer, Coe and Huzzie will have big roles in 2023.

It was beyond time to move on from Bly. His position group had grossly underperformed since he arrived. This doesn't take away from him being one of the best to ever do it as a player at UNC, the dude is just not really a great coach/teacher as much as they wanted the experiment to work. He had very limited experience going into it and unfortunately he is just not cut out for it at the D1 level.
Would have loved for him to have taken a role in the football front offices at UNC to still be in on recruiting, but if he thinks he's still got a future as a coach - best of luck to him in his endeavors.
Bateman ran the defense from 2019-2021 and Warren and Chiz ran it this year. Dre had no say in scheme and I promise he wasn’t telling his guys to play 10 yards off on 3rd and 3. Are we also going to blame him for UNC ranking 128 out of 131 teams in sacks? Dre was primarily a recruiter and was an assistant position coach the last 4 years. Wanted so badly for him to be able to teach what he was good at as a player along with a physical aggressive defensive front.
Successful coaches can adapt and adjust to scheme changes because they are great teachers and communicators. I realize that he wasn't the DC and didn't call the shots (I am a Carolina fan), but you have to be able to teach what is expected of you in whatever scheme you are put it. Just because he was so good in press coverage doesn't excuse him from not being able to teach other techniques/schemes.
And yes, our DL has also been putrid - Cross needs to be gone, yesterday. I am actually surprised Bly was let go before Cross. If we do not fire Cross soon...I will riot, lol.
Not disagreeing with any of that. But like I said, he was the assistant to Bateman/Warren/Chiz. He was there to recruit and learn from all of those other guys. The players they have and the scheme they're running doesn't/didn't gel, which explains all the turnover in the DB room created by Warren. Regardless, good luck fielding a competent secondary when the QB has 10 seconds to throw. I'm a Tar Heel fan as well, but I'm not going to lie to you and say I won't be laughing a little as we continue to get torched through the air in 2023 and folks will have to find someone else to blame. Mack offered a different title to Dre and he declined.
One of the best recruiters in the game. That part will hurt badly, no matter what anyone thinks of his coaching skills.
Definitely starts up front - that's why not replacing Cross would be inexcusable. We have too much 4/5 star talent on the DL to be as bad as we are.
Really wish Dre had taken Mack up on that offer - I think he would be a good fit solely on the recruiting side of things.
I would say Bateman was more aggressive than Chizik. Bateman recommended Mack to terminate Cross and Bly. Mack had allegiance to Cross (from Texas days) and Bly.
Agree that he works with what the DC implements and the DB has to contend with a soft shell coverage and weak pass rush. Basic DB skills, being in position, blown coverages are what I would hope would improve as players gained experience. After four years basic DB play is still a major issue.
I thought Dre Bly was one of the best hires made by Mack. Over the years you would see him in the football facility early on game days being an ambassador and an example of what UNC can do. "I am a TAR HEEL" is Dre Bly 100%.
Dre is great with young people, great at playing the position, saw both first hand up close. Some former NFLers are ready to step in, some need seasoning, some just will not be FBS coaches. Time will tell on the latter two.
Bateman wanted to be more aggressive but a majority of the time the players had no idea what the call was. Over and over you saw the players looking at the sideline as the ball was being snapped. Dre is the ultimate Tar Heel, no doubt. Would've loved to see him coach up the guys paired with an above average pass rush. Will be interesting to see how the secondary does with all of these new faces.
A lot of it too was the safety play, which was Bateman and Warren's baby. DB's thinking they had help over the top and there is Kelly either taking bad angles or getting smoked. Don't get me started on the last 2-3 minutes of the 2021 State game.
I know on another site it was mentioned Dre was offered something different but Dre would not be able to recruit off campus if he accepted a non-coaching position.
Got a feeling they're waiting to fire the current DL coach when the 1st wave of the portal closes in the next week. However, I wouldn't be shocked if Mack didn't do anything.
Go steal my guy Tray Scott from Georgia. All he does is create 1st round draft picks every year.
He coached at UNC with Chizik in 2015. They’d have to give him head coach money for him to leave UGA.
That’s 2-3x what they’re paying the current guy. Scott is worth every penny that he’s getting paid but UNC is gonna UNC.
I’m aware - but he could have had his hand in all of the on-campus events such as official visits, camps, 7-on-7’s, and anything else they hosted in Chapel Hill.
Not the same as being in houses, going to games etc. He’s got fields named after him in the 757. He wants to coach and recruit. Hopefully he goes to a place where he has freedom to coach how he wants in addition to recruiting.
Which in the end is probably why they are a peak 9-10 win team. Guys like Saban, Smart, Day, Riley get the camera time but it's the position coaches that really drive the progession from 4 star to NFL first day guys. That takes a huge commitment and outside of Clemson it doesn't happen in a BBall conf.
When was the last year they were legitimately a scary defense? Just curious
Probably 97 when they were #2 in the nation in opponents points per game at 12ppg. DL coach is still employed as of 1/13 after finishing dead last in P5 in sacks forced with 14. Louisville had over 40.
Outside of the top 3-4 programs every one has the same issue. Every year there is maybe 15-20 legitimate freaks in that front 7. The top tier get 80% so those who don't are forced to out score...Drake , Caleb, Hooker or they get pressure with 4-5.. If UNC gets 2 guys it they jump up but it's brutally hard
UNC is never going to be a top 10 football program because the powers that be (and lets face it, most of their fans and alumni) don't care enough about it to do it. They'll always be a basketball first school even when the football money from the schools that do care about it buries them.
