Could There Be A Referee Problem in The NCHSAA ???

They lost the State Championship game to WRH by 1 point in OT with MA scoring 1st going up by 7, score now 37-30 and the WRH scored and went for 2 with the final score WRH 38 MA 37. And they were 1A by ADMs like Elkin is 1A by ADMs. If ADMs don't matter now then teams on the border could fall either way. Mount Airy was 1A for 2 years and then 1AA. There have been several years that Mount Airy was only 5 to 10 people over the 1A ADM and played 1AA
What you’re saying is MA was the first western team to lose in 1a since it was started….

.

That's why I said more pay per game. Was there not an extra playoff game this year for the NCHSAA to take their part from the schools. I am sure the state saw that as more money added to the $42,000 they had in their surplus. That was 4 extra games so they can start to help pay the Refs more to get better Refs and better training on how to properly call a game. More pay = better Refs that will do a better job to keep that job. I would bet the people in the NCHSAA is like our politicians and give themselves more pay anytime they want it. Is there anything on the NCHSAA website that shows what they make? I am sure staff makes what they want and if the state gets involved that needs to be made public if it is not already on the website. Every penny they take in needs to be accounted for. I don't have the answer for this, but I do and think everyone else should be asking for more openness posted on link of their main page and that they understand they are taking NC school money and need to use it to help pay for better trained with accountability on the job they do for the extra pay. Like I said I just have a lot of questions and I think everyone needs to know why the NCHSAA would have a surplus of $42,000 and taking gate money and laying a fine on schools for some stupid reason when the schools need the money to cover all sports. Is no one else out there have questions about where their school money is going when the schools as I read on another thread that out of the 10 games they played, only 3 had working score boards and also said the Refs had the say if they did not want the scoreboard running the Ref had the right to make the school turn it off. He may not have known what he was talking about with the Ref being able to make them turn off the scoreboard as I have never heard of that or been to a school without a working scoreboard. But I trust that there are schools that can't afford to fix their scoreboards. Again I don't have the answer but everyone on here should have questions on where the money is going and maybe the state of NC has those questions is why they are getting involved. I hope the audit the NCHCAA and each person that gets paid working there and I am sure there are people getting paid to run the association. With all I said, It was all to get better-paid Refs with accountability on the job they do to get higher pay. With higher pay, we may get some of the better Refs that have left to come back. I'm I the only one with questions ?
PS, Thunder_struck8712 can you explain to us how all this works or do you have questions too ?

Let's start with higher pay for teachers, school, and state employees first.

And yes officials should get more pay but pay isn't the only answer.

You do know schools pay the officials right?

What you’re saying is MA was the first western team to lose in 1a since it was started….

.
No, what I am saying is Elkin is weak and has been since the early to
mid-2000s. Now chew on that for a little while. You have nothing to brag about so you want to put down a team that is still playing while Elkin is practicing basketball year in and year out more often than not. So what is the point of your continued whining? Whin about not having a team that can compete if you want to whine ! !

Yes, and I said the NCHSAA should match their pay with all the money they have put back. Why should they have $42,000 in reserve ? Are they saving it for a rainy day? LOL... Stop their taking so much from the schools ! !

No one from Mount Airy has bad-mouthed our team, but there have been complaints about the coach letting things get out of hand. I was not at the game but heard all on the radio but I know two of the posters that you mouthed off to and one has been a well know business owner in Mount Airy and I would trust anything he says because he is here with his real name that everyone can know.
This is from you or one of the other inbred MA posters

The days of MA playing in College football stadiums on a Saturday are over!!!! Talent is there but he cannot win a big game. Can't prepare a team mentally and can't call offense during the game. Anyone can coach the talent MA has and win in this weak ass conf. All y'all brag how good he coaches in Regular season then trash how weak conference is smh. Get a clue! Then playoff time he has not beat.a.team outside the conference in 3 years. Proof is there guys. I'm not bashing him it's the truth.

If you would read before shooting off your mouth, go back and read what I said. No one is blaming the team. It was said we had a great team and you should know that from the butt-kicking and shut-out Mount Airy gave Elkin. They couldn't even score on our 2nd string, not even a field goal. That is why you are whining so much. The coach let his team get out of control, that is what beat us. If 2 of the 4 of 5 TDs had not been called back, Mount Airy wins the game. After the 2nd TD was called back, he should have had a timeout and some butt chewing. Even a Mitchell poster said MA was 2 TDs better than them if not for the things that happened in that game, or basically if the team had played their game with control.

May want to check that, TD. It’s forty-two million dollars, not forty-two thousand. But what’s a few zeros among friends?

LOL, It had been a while since I have seen it. The state needs to audit them going back 10 years and everyone that was a part of the NCHSAA No more fines on schools and handle wrongdoing in another way depending on how bad the misconduct is, like forfeit of a game or games instead of robbing the schools when they have that much money in reserves. Football pays for the majority of all sports and these smaller 1A schools can't afford to keep up the NCHSAA and add to their bank account. It's going to be interesting as to what the state does when they take over. As an organization, the NCHSAA may not have had to pay taxes on that money, I can see that changing fast with no excuse for having that amount of money when the schools need it.

I just want to say Mitchell did a great job in their win over Mount Airy and in no way am I trying to take away their win. My only complaint is how the MA coach lost control of his team and the things the Refs called were way overboard.

Grown men crying over a game played by teenagers. This board is comical!
Glad I'm not the only one that thinks that
I guess I am the only one that has recently posted my age, so I just wanted to say you both will be here as we all grow old. Maybe you 2 will be around when they come up with a miracle drug that stops aging.... LOL, My only luck is if they find one that reverses aging too.

GOOD NIGHT

I bad mouthed the coach idiot not the team. I said the talent is there. Learn to read prick.

All referees and umpires have to pay the NCHSAA insurance and registration fees of around $70 for each sport they do. Then $75-$100 to a assigner. Then have to travel to 6-10 clinics that are 3 hours long. Then take 100? Exam. Then work 3-4 scrimmages for free. Most times by the time you pay this and gas and equipment and uniforms you don't make much. An official does it for love of the game and to be around the kids.

I was not at the Mount Airy vs Mitchell game but was hearing play-by-play on the radio and could not believe all the calls on Mount Airy & Mitchell but much more and worse calls on MA. Did the coach deserve all the calls or were all the calls that may have been bad causing the coach to get pissed and getting the calls. In all the games I covered as a photographer for 9 years and all the games I have been to and listened to on the radio, I have NEVER heard as many calls on one team and as many TDs called back as this game. I've been wanting t post this since that game but decided till the season was over to say what I thought. These NCPreps boards are open for all to see and I can imagine quite a few Refs read them. Have too many rules been added over the years for new Refs to fairly call a game? Do they need to review all the High school rules and make a new set since they can't keep enough Refs for the games because maybe they are being chewed out for bad calls? Seems every year the NCHSAA adds rules. Maybe that is why the state is stepping in. I say the Refs need more paid training and more pay and milage increase for each game and with that some type of penalty for consecutive bad calls and a review by the state if they are going to involve themselves in high school sports. Also, the state decides on the pay for the Refs. Better pay for fewer bad calls. That's just my opinion, what do others suggest? I have heard a lot of complaints from the SMC and others. My personal opinion is Better paid training, better pay, and millage pay per game with penalties on Refs for too many bad calls. If not 100% sure, then a no call. This is high school kids, not college or pro ! People don't pay to see the Refs, they pay to see the games. Sorry if some don't like what I just said but your opinion is welcome as that is all I have to say, right or wrong I just thought I needed to say it and get it out of my system. I am sure others have better ideas, and that was mine and post yours if mine is bad. I WILL NOT ANSWER TO ANYONE THAT DISAGREES, JUST AGREE, DISAGREE OR POST YOUR OPINION.
I had a kid playing in that game as you all know by now honestly MA was 2 scores better than Mitchell but very undisciplined every td called back was legit the MA kids honestly played dirty and didn't try to hide it, coach showed his hind end all night, with refs that looked the other way game would have ended different I'd say teach those kids and coaches some humility and they might end up in week 16 next fall just my honest opinion

Never officiated football, but called volleyball and basketball for a pretty good while. I found that there are two kinds of officials….the good ones and those who are in it for a check. The good ones will work hard and do their jobs with integrity, regardless of the pay. Increasing the pay will likely only bring out more of the second kind. Unfortunately, there are too many of those already.
I’m all for paying them more, but doubt that will fix the problem. That’s because the problem is us. As a society, we seem to think that every person in any position of authority is fair game for our wrath, our scorn, and subject to character assassination. That “greatest generation”, my parents’, would be ashamed of who we have become.
The philosopher Epictetus said it best. “It’s not what happens to you, but how you react to it that matters.”

No taxes to be paid. The NCHSAA is a tax exempt nonprofit.
YES,BINGO ! ! !
42 million dollars in the bank sounds like profit for someone. How do they justify having that much money accumulated? What are they doing for the schools with that money ? I am sure they are drawing interest on it also. The NCHSAA is far far worse than I ever thought. I hope they get audited and each member for the last 10 years gets fined for anything found wrong and a portion of the money returned to the schools for sports improvements. The money was made off the schools so it should have been returned to the schools. What in the world did they intend to do with 42 million dollars and how long were they going to let it grow. The state needs to replace every member with retired coaches that knows what the schools need instead of trying to see how much they can grow a bank account. Again what the _ _ _ L was they going to do with all that money and how much does the ones that work there make, not the school representatives that only vote on the things they put up for a vote.

Charlie Adams was looking to the day when the concussion/video playing/AAU phenomenon catches up with high school sports and they need the money. Btango can explain it much better than I can. But I worry less about the endowment fund than the state legislature getting their greedy, greasy hands on it.

No, the state should not get a penny of the money but the reason I think there needs to be at least a 10 + year audit is to find out how much money came in and how much interest it drew how much went out and what it was for and make sure it balances out. I am not saying any was taken out but with that much money, it could be very tempting for something to go wrong. If someone just took the interest, that would be wrong and I apologize if I am asking for something like this but it all needs to be accounted for since it was taken from our schools.

And I want to reiterate that this thread is to get Better Refs that make more money and they will be a penalty for those that constantly make bad calls with films from the schools being sent in to verify and after enough evidence is sent in the Ref gets fined. Again the NCHSAA needs to match $ for $ what the school pays and I know 12 years ago the state mileage was 48 cents a mile for using your vehicle on the job. It may be more now. If these Refs stand to lose a much better pay, then we should get better Refs that understand they can be replaced for not doing what the rules say and intentional bad calls. I don't know if it happens now or If I was told wrong but back in the 1990s I was waiting for the game to start talking to some other guys and a man came in and one guy pointed and said something and I ask what was going on. He said the man that came in, seems he had a walking cane and I was told he was a supervisor of Refs and went to different games to watch the Refs. Did that happen years ago and if so does it still take place ? I saw him twice in the 90s, once at MA and the other time was at a different school. At Mount Airy seems he came and stood on the sideline but not sure, may have gone to the press box or done both for a while. I know he was on the sideline a while and then I lost him.

Well to start the NCGA has a surplus of billions of dollars from YOUR tax dollars with hardly any intention of using it for anything that benefits YOU.

Meanwhile we have kids in over crowded and rundown buildings while they sit on that surplus and does lord knows what with the lottery fund.

They keep pushing vouchers which take money away from YOUR public schools and sends it to charter and privates.

They refuse to give teachers and state employees a raise thats even close to adjusted for inflation. Piddly bonuses are nothing but an empty gesture. There is a statewide staff shortage including bus drivers.

They refuse to fund a nurse, psychologist, and counselor for every school.

They're pushing for school boards to become partisan, which if you don't see the issue with that I can't help you.

They won't allow schools to start so they can end the 1st semester before Christmas because of the tourism industry.

Public schools are being treated as a hinderence because there is no way for the NCGA to make money off their interest. But guess what they can make money from? Charter and private schools. 😁

So while you keep bringing up the money the NCHSAA has on hand, sounds to be it's just more fiscal conservatism. That's at least how the NCGA views it when they have money on hand. So which way do you want it?

WOW, so many crocked people with control of our school's money and our money. And what has happened to the money the stated gave the schools before the lottery and with all the millions or billions of dollars the lottery has taken in, our schools should be in great shape with teachers making their worth for teaching. All politicians are out of control and we need to clean house the next 2 elections but we don't need a lot of inexperienced people in there not knowing what to do and things becoming chaotic. I guess we are just plain out of luck and will have to wait for Jesus to come and fix the whole world. Man has no answer with our nation so divided. We need to do more praying is my answer.

That's the problem. We get tired of the same old same old so for some reason we've decided that extremist with no experience are the answer but they're just further dividing and messing things up.

Sadly we are about to get more extremist elected with horrifying views of public education based on misconceptions and lies.

No offense to anyone's relgious views but saying we just need to pray has become a very inconvenient way to avoid working to fix solutions and I'm tired of hearing it from our politicians.

I just don't want our country to turn to socialism. It has not worked in other countries and we need to be smart enough to see the writing on the wall. The government will want to make all our decisions for us like we are not smart enough to make our own. Socialist wants power over all of us and then we will never know where our money goes.

You're surrounded by socialist programs already. Do you draw social security?

No one wants full blown socialism. Stop letting people make you believe that programs that help people are 3rd world full blown socialism.

I draw a fraction of what we as a nation paid in. What we paid in should have been locked with interest and never been allowed to be used for other programs. We could be drawing as much as we made before retirement if they had not stolen from what we thought was a government-controlled saving for our retirement. We have been ripped off by both sides of our thieving government for years and it only gets worse. It will take 2 generations to pay off all the debt being accumulated and that is only if it is stopped and we get on track to a balanced economy.

Sorry, we got away from the Thread's purpose ! But it has brought out more problems with our schools and the way our state is run. Football season is over so I just we can talk about other school and stat problems as not much more can be talked about the 2021-2022 season or the 1A - 4A basketball boards are starting up. I have to keep my mind busy and this seems to keep me on my toes. I think without this I would probably get Alzheimer's, LOL... Other social media does not help like NCPreps.

You could get a lot of your questions answered by starting at the MA school ad building, I do believe a past president of NCHSAA is still employed there. I believe she was president as recently as 2018.
