The videos of the Western 3-A finals are online for your viewing memories.

A little history: the old reel-to-reel tapes of the games were converted to VHS about 15 years ago. I was on what they now call injured reserve for my senior season (1969) but coach Morris asked me to keep the stats for the team.

I still had my play-by-play notes and stats all those years later so I got together with the producer (Ram fan and tech expert Tim Bates) and former radio guy Wes Overby (aka RamBBQ). Wes used my script to narrate the video.

Mt. Airy and Pisgah fans: Obviously the video has a Reidsville slant with the call of the tackles, etc. But I think you'll enjoy watching it anyway.

NOTE: Scroll down to see the Mount Airy game. I posted on 1-3-20.

I can't access the videos. The link just takes me to the page where it asks me to sign up for a new account, which I did. Once I signed in, I went to albums and it said I didn't have any. I figured that since it was a new account, but I can't seem to locate the video that you have...

Think the YouTube police actually watched it? ... maybe it was some background music that was used.

Yep ... upon further review, it says it used
Woodstock Inprovisation
Jimi Hendrix

Music is only there only a few seconds.

I know some of those gentleman..they are way older than me.. actually worked with Mike Free. I am very involved with Pisgah football
Thanks -- be sure to let Mike Free know and he can probably pass it on to his teammates.

Thank you for this! I love watching these old films, my dad does too he played in the mid 70's for my school.

Do you got the link to the MA game too?

I was at that game.Pisgah had played every game on the road at Forbush,Monroe and Reidsville. We lost to Brevard that year when a guy named Eagle Moss played.Lot of Pisgah fans remember him.Reidsville came to Brevard and beat them so we all knew they were good.Pisgah won the Western District next year and never lost another game until Tuscola beat us is second round 1972 after we had beat them in regular season. Those Joe Compton teams were something else as were Danny Shooks teams.

I did the color for WFRC (no longer around) radio station in Reidsville...Pisgah had some big strong boys....1st time and think last time I saw the Notre Dame Box in person......have seen and played against traditional single wing but not the box....a true power formation...…..any idea why Pisgah players helmets didn't all match?? some wore red...some white....didn't make any difference as far as quality of the team.....just kinda unusual...…...Did Pisgah use that ND box formation any in later years??

I don't know about the helments .As for the ND Box.Joe Compton brought it from Fitzgerald Georgia where he had won a state championship He had a kicker on that Georgia team named Ray Guy who had a pretty good pro career..He ran it in 71-72 .Winning Western district in 71 with an undefeated season. He left Pisgah after 72 season with a record of 35-3.Perry Pearson took over in 73 and only lasted two years. Then Danny Shook who was an assistant under Compton then Pearson won state championship in 75 and 76 running the box.
Scott Connars another Compton assistans went to Reynolds and ran the box .took Reynolds to the finals where they lost to Ricmond county.Another assistant went to Franklin and won the only state championship they have ever won .

Compton had an impressive record for such a short stint Pisgah....any idea where he went after he left?? Ray Guy is in NFL HOF....think he is the only pure punter in HOF......……………….

He moved bact to Fitzgerald where he had a farm.He also coaches a couple of year.Joe died a few years ago.
You mentioned the red helmets.Back then Joe gave the players that had a good game, most tackels, blocks and yardage a red sticker I believe a red bear head. Some of those guys had a lot of them on their helmets .So that may be what your talking about.
The two Cobb kids did they go to college?

Lee Cobb..number 44...all-state back...got married in high school...never attended college...he recently retired after years of being a prison guard in neighboring Caswell County.....inducted into Reidsville football HOF as an individual, as was the entire 1969 team.....he looks like he could still play trim....same physique...obviously works out a lot.....still plays on traveling softball teams.....think Raymond Cobb (no relation) still lives in area but not sure...Hard to believe Pisgah and Reidsville have never met again on the football field since that 1970 game.....maybe be it will happen again....Reidsville has faced Brevard six times (1960 won by Brevard), (1963 Western 3A title co-champions), (1970 won by Reidsville), (2006 won by Reidsville), (2018 won by Reidsville), (2019 won by Reidsville)…………...I know Pisgah and Brevard are big rivals....Pisgah loss to Brevard in 1970 was decided by a FG by a guy named Gary Nelson......who ironically years later was an assistant coach at Reidsville...………………...

They were several kids on that team from Pisgah that got college scholorships either that year or the next year. The Milner kid along with Pat Smathers the kicker both went to Duke,Mike Burnett went to Kentucky.Mike Free to WCU,Derick Thomas to Mars Hill.I think they were more but I can't remember.

I definitely remember Smathers as kicker at Duke....That Free guy was a load....not surprised he played somewhere.....odd that the Bears went away from him carrying the ball much after the first qtr....wonder if he got nicked up in the game.....he was the main man in the first half...……..

OK ... Finally the Reidsville-Mount Airy game ... Please let me know if this works. I had to go back and trim the portion at the end of the video that showed the game statistics and Reidsville's final season statistics since that part had copyrighted music accompaniment.
Enjoy (hopefully).

FEEDBACK APPRECIATED.

I played at Reidsville in 67 and 68.... so, I’m a Reidsville guy!
I played in 68 but was injured and didn't play in 69 - coach Morris asked me keep stats. I believe I was the second-team punter behind you!

I remember you well! When we practiced punting, we always talked about different stuff. Man, I remember when Coach Morris chewed my ass out for making a mistake on defense during a game at Kiker Stadium. I didn’t make that mistake again!

Hope you are doing well!

lol....you must be older than me......I was a soph at Guilford college when Reidsville/Mt. Airy met in 1969...played against M.A. in 1967...Jack Childress was middle linebacker for the Granite Bears....rocked me a few times...lol...they had a real good team and great teams the next couple of years before Reidsville derailed them in finals of 1969...................
