3A West RPI

HSOT may go 0-4 on all of their predictions of Ledford, Crest, Eastern and NW Cabarrus all winning their conference.
Oak Grove may beat Ledford again in close one.
I think the Crest/KM game will be a good one and wouldn’t be surprised if either team won.
Eastern will lose by double digits
JM Robinson may beat NW Cabarrus.
I also wonder how far West Charlotte will drop if they drop another game to Chambers, possibly a 4-5 seed I’m thinking. It’s going to be some good games coming up here soon.
Oak Grove not only beat them but they dominated them 41-7. Let’s see how HSOT does on the other three picks these next two weeks.

So, Pisgah is #1 even though they lost to both W. Henderson and Tuscola, meanwhile Freedom could sneak in and take the 3A playoff spot in the NW3A/4A and they're 44th in RPI for 3A west.
Please make it make sense.
Edit-looks like Pisgah is actually 7th now.

Yeah max preps must not have been updated earlier. How will they determine 3A winner in our conference?

I figure whichever team has the best conference record. So, right now, FHS is 2-1, HHS is 1-2 and Ashe is 1-2. By my reckoning Freedom needs to win one out of two (Watauga and AC) if either Ashe or HHS loses one game. I know you guys have AC and then finish with SC, so if you win out and finish tied with us, then you get the playoff bid. On the other hand Ashe has SC and Watauga, so if we win one of two and so do they and you guys lose one then we get the bid. If we all finish tied somehow at 2-3, then I think they use RPI to break the tie.
Anyway, given that we were sitting at 1-5 two weeks ago, I’m happy that we have something to play for here at the end.

Each conference is different, but in most ties, if the winner can not be determined through head to head, it's drawing straws to determine. Haven't heard of any conference using RPI for tiebreaker but it could be used if that's the conference rules are.

I understand the seeding, but it absolutely sucks for 2 of the top 3 teams in the west to play and the loser drop to an 11 seed. That takes money out of the hands of someones Athletic dept that should have had several home game gates to rake in. And it's really going to suck for that 6 or 7 seed that thought they were going to make a deep playoff run.

The maxpreps rpi rankings are really flawed but it is what we have at the moment.
Are you saying the RPI is MaxPreps?
Doesn't make sense. Max preps has Mount airy at sos -30.
The RPI has them at 3 seed.

Max Preps rankings are different than RPI. RPI gets the records from Max preps to input but thats it.

Pisgah's non conference games are bearing more weight than West Henderson's are the way the RPI formula works.
Thats the way I see it.
Pisgah may finish the season with a high RPI than WH but will be a lower seed of course if West wins conference at the end.
Not sure yet where the seeding will place the teams that finish first in their conference but I guess thats where they use the RPI to assign those seeds.
Someone correct me if I am wrong.......

This link explains the seeding process pretty good.

Not sure about Lake Norman Charter since they don't play in a conference. They should play in the 3A SPC but played no conerence games?

HSOT did projections and says Parkwood has to finish with a .500 overall record to be seeded with the conference champs otherwise they will be seeded based on RPI with wild cards. Also it says this about Lake Norman Charter…..
“Note: Lake Norman Charter is ineligible for the playoffs because it plays an independent schedule.”

From Nick Stevens on HighschoolOT:
In split conferences with at least two teams from a particular classification, the highest-finishing team from a particular classification will make the playoffs automatically, regardless of where it finishes in the overall conference standings.

Yes, I agree, I was saying Parkwood will make it but won’t be seeded as a conference champion.

No way Dudley should be rated that low. That's some BS
I agree, Before the Dudley-Southern Guilford Game this past friday, Dudley was #6 in the NCHSAA RPI 3A RATING, ahead of Robinson, AC Reynolds & Oak Grove. Then after that game they dropped behind the teams I mention. It's crazy to me that maybe a 10-0 {Dudley} may be Seeded lower than maybe a 8-2 Team in {W. Charlotte} and a 7-3 Team in {A.C. Reynolds}. Plus I am confused with the Polling across several Sources with Dudley. Chris Hughes Carolina Preps has DUDLEY #1 in 3A. BrianSimmonsRatings. Com has DUDLEY #2 in 3A & #13 in All Classes in his Power Ratings. HSOT All Classifications Top 25 has Dudley #3. Maxprep has Dudley #6 in 3A, but #24th in All Classes. What is it that Chris Hughes and Brian Simmons see or feel in Dudley that Maxprep sees different? With that said, if Dudley stays where they at on the R.P.I at #9.....I feel Dudley plays more stronger, focus and with a attitude/chip when they have to travel on the road. However, this 3A WEST will be a LANDMINE TO GET OUT OF!!! Looking forward to it to see what happens. I realize Dudley Out of Conference wasn't strong. Durham Hillside & SE Guilford are normally solid teams in 4A. Page was in the upper part of their Conference after Grimsley, NW Guilford in 3rd Place. Dudley Conference has 5 teams that might finished 500% and above out of 8 teams. With Dudley (9-0), Eastern Guilford (8-1), Rockingham Co (6-3), NE Guilford (6-3) and Ben Smith at (4-5). 4 teams are going to the playoffs.

Difference is human polls and computer polls, with different algorithms.

Dudley or any team can drop even if they when because RPI factors in your past opponents and their opponents also.

The top half of 3A west is the brutal part as of now. That 10/11 seed (between KM/Crest because of Parkwood) has a much easier route on the bottom half of 3A west.

This system is broke
Yes it truly is, however I believe there are several teams in 3A west that can make it to the finals and each and everyone of them will have earned it no matter what their seed is. Great teams don’t care who they play or where they play because they know they can beat anyone anywhere. As fans it’s not fun to travel but championship caliber teams say “bring it on” and Dudley is a perfect example of this, I know they are in that bring it on mode when the brackets come out.

Hmm. Not really broke. Its actually working correctly. Dudley's schedule has been relatively weak. Well in all honesty its brutally weak. Southern Guilford and HPC may be worst than Garinger in Charlotte. Id take Garinger to beat them both. Atkins is horrible. Ben Smith is horrid. Also. Northeast Guilford is horrid, and only wins are against the more horrible teams in their conference.

-So 5 teams in their conference are among the worst teams in the state regardless of classification. When your best wins are Page and Hillside that says alot about your schedule. Hillside aint the same team that beat Dudley the prior years either so the computer is working correctly. Vs. a 7-2 WC that has wins over monroe, indy, Mallard Creek with two losses to Hough/Chambers which are possibly the top 5 regardlessof class in the state. WC should be ahead of Dudley.

AC Reynolds has 3 losses to an undefeated team, and two one loss teams. So they too should be ahead of Dudley.

Agree with Chris Hughes that Dudley is loaded and will do well in the playoffs. But the CPU rankings help balance the schedule issues. As some teams play really tough conference/sked, and some teams dont. If AC Reynolds and WC had Dudley schedule they would also be undefeated. If Dudley had WC or AC reynolds sked they wouldnt be undefeated IMHO.

Agreed. That's why I like a computer formula versus humans from all over the state trying to guesstimate were seedings should be.

Yes we need the CPU rankings as they are unbiased. year to year teams change. Dudley will be a beast in the playoffs. The 3A West playoffs are gonna be epic.

RPI = (0.3 x WP) + (0.4 x OWP) + (0.3 x OOWP)

I dont like that your own winning percentage counts less than your opponents.

I'd like to see what the RPI looked like with a 40, 30, 30 formula or 40, 40, 20.
The part about OOWP that bothers me is that you have no control over who your opponents play (non-conference). More weight should be on your winning percentage, then opponents and then OOWP as no more than 20% of the final score.

Then you run into the issue of an average team in an awful conference scheduling non conference awful teams and getting higher seeds than really good teams that challenge themselves schedule wise. It definitely could be tweaked some with percentages though.

Agreed! West Charlotte has arguably played one of the toughest schedules in the state regardless of classification so the RPI will favor them. I don’t think people understand it’s not a ranking of the best teams. That’s why teams like Pisgah (no shade) always has a fairly high RPI.
I will add though that if they did switch schedules Hough would be their only loss but it would be close. Hough is the only team that’s arguably top 5 in the state on their schedule. I told you this earlier in the year. Chambers is good but not great.

Was with you on Chambers being down. What i didnt factor in was other teams and what they lost comparatively. Also Tre Robinson has been great. Chambers has weapons galore and defensively are strong.

They are top 5 team in the state. Hough too. MC was the one that dipped that really surpised me.

Chambers is Top 10 but not top 5. I would put Hough, Grimsley, Dudley, Weddington, Butler over them and a few teams out East would give them fits. They were better last year when they had both conceptions, Camp, Thompson, etc IMO. Still strong and can make it deep in the West but not a legit title contender.
I saw Hough host Dudley in a private practice/scrimmage earlier in the year and were high on both since. That’s why I didn’t agree that Hough was down this year even after losing but still think the offense will possibly be the reason they don’t get over the hump yet again.
I only see three teams possibly representing the 4A west and about three in 3A west.

Brackets going to be interesting with West Charlotte losing again. I’m curious to see how far they drop.

Well based on the current RPI Standings at 2:33AM Saturday. Dudley moved back to #5 in the 3A West with a 0.63175. J.M. Robinson is 6th with a 0.62445. Oak Grove is 7th with a 0.62068 and A.C. Reynolds is 8th with a 0.60965.

Crest is 1st with a 0.68852, Hickory is 2nd at 0.65642, Kings Mountain is 3rd with a 0.64967, West Henderson is 4th with a 0.64389.

That Durham Hillside team started the season 1-4 ended up winning their last 5 games beating Chapel Hill and a (7-2) #14 R.P.I. Durham Jordan Team ( winning 41-35) who only loses was to 4A Cardinal Gibbons (35-31) and 4A Raleigh Millbrook (33-22)

West Charlotte fell to #13 in the RPI of 0.58959, behind #11 Eastern Guilford (8-2) with a RPI of 0.59669. Dudley beat that talented Eastern Guilford Team 35-10 at Eastern Friday.

With all that said the 2023 3A Playoffs are going to be a Old School Texas Steel Cage Match on Both the East & West Sides.
