Caldwell beat Gaston 9-2, real good pitching from Caldwell and a lot errors by Gaston lead to the lopsided score

Whoever the 2 guys that umpired game 4 of the Caldwell series should never be able to umpire a legion game again, so what happened was tie ball game after 7 the umpires start extra innings with bases loaded 1 out which is incorrect, Gaston scores 3 runs before Caldwell protest the game. They suspended the game to call someone over legion they say start the 8th inning over with normal baseball program is Caldwell pitcher wasted 25 pitches he has to be pulled. So game continues neither team scored in the 8th and Gaston didn’t score in the top of the 9th, Caldwell gets a runner on 2nd 1 out with the lead off batter up, Gaston then ask to protest the game saying it shouldn’t have started back the way it did so Gaston pulls their players off the field then the umpires left. So in conclusion there’s no winner as of right now In this series, this is all on the umpires

Well, it sounds like the umpires screwed everything up. I was not at the game. However, I heard a different set of events than what you detailed. I heard that they started the extra innings with a man on second (like MLB does in extra innings), nobody out. I also heard that Gaston scored 3 runs in the top of the 9th to take a 12-9 lead and at that point Caldwell protested the game. Like I said I was not there, so I don't know what the facts actually are. It will be interesting to find out the whole story. As of last night no ruling had been made on the protest.

Ok, I just saw that according to Richard Walker the game was tied 9-9 in 9th when game is put under protest. Lots of questions about this. Did the umpires treat the 8th inning the same as the 9th inning and if so, why wasn't a protest filed at that point.

Game was started based loaded 1 out and yes Gaston did score 3 but the extee tee a inning was not done correctly

This is what I have learned about the happenings last night. The plate umpire informed the teams about an international rule that says if the score is still tied after 8 innings, to begin the 9th inning the bases would be loaded with one out.

After some discussion and the umpire refusing to call Area IV Commissioner Jerry Hudson to discuss what he was doing they begin the 9th with the bases loaded and one out. Gaston proceeded to score 3 runs in the top of the 9th to take a 12-9 lead. After much more discussion and arguing (45 mins to an hour) the Gaston Braves athletic director pulled the Gaston players off the field and refused to continue playing. Probably not very wise since his team had a 3 run lead. It's not clear to me if Caldwell protested prior to Gaston refusing to play or after but in any case Caldwell did protest and won the protest based on Gaston refusing to finish the game.

Now, about this international rule. I would not think it would apply in any way to Legion baseball. But that obviously needs to be clarified going forward.

Correct about NCAL doesn't use International rules. They play 7 innings so no reason to speed the games up. IMO all coaches should know this. No reason to pull your team off the field? The extra innings lets say going into the 8th will be played just like the 1st inning. No runners on base no outs.

My assumption is that if Gaston would have just played the game out last night the ruling on the protest would have been to replay the 9th inning since it was played with incorrect rules. Gaston should have known by walking off the field, they would be likely forfeiting the game.

Congrats to Caldwell County on their series win. See you in Cherryville Thursday night.

Incorrect they started the 8th with bases loaded then Gastonia scored 3 at the point Caldwell protested, then they called jerry he said to restart the 8th so they did neither team scored in the 8th and Gastonia didn’t score in the top of the 9th, Caldwell got a runner on 2nd with 1 out in the bottom of the 9th at that point Gastonia pulled their team off the field

That is strange. Cleveland and Rutherford played a 9 inning game this year and play continued as normal.

In American Legion baseball the play in extra innings should continue as normal. The umpires last night had it all wrong. Both of them were fired today and will never umpire another American Legion game.

Don, I’m at Granite Falls. Cherryville is up on Caldwell 2-0 going to the top of the 6th. It rained here earlier and feels like the rain forest.

How was the pitcher from caldwell
McElyea, the starter for Caldwell pitched 7 innings giving up 9 hits, 2 runs (one earned), walked 1, and struck out 6. Dula, the losing pitcher threw the last 2 innings giving up 2 hits, one run, 2 walks.

For Cherryville the starter Brockman went 5 1/3, gave up an unearned run on 5 hits, walked 3, struck out 9. Newsome, the winning pitcher went 3 2/3 giving up 4 hits, one run, waked 2, struck out 6.

It was a low scoring game but both teams had numerous scoring opportunities that they failed to capitalize on. Each team left 14 men on base. Lots of clutch pitching by all the pitchers. It was a great game with lots of drama throughout.

With his size speed and control I could easily see him playing at the next level. To echo what Linkman said, last night’s game could have gone either way.

Hickory forfeiting is messed up. I'm sure Mint Hill is furious. Granted, MH should have done their part and beat Hickory. But still....... Asheville is a good team. This allows them to set their pitching up however they see fit in the next round. Big advantage there.

He’s only 16 a raising senior
Yes, I definitely seeing him playing at the next level. I do think McElyea has a bright future. Something he did last night which was time consuming and frustrating to the Cherryville hitters was throwing over to first when a base runner reached. I bet he threw over there at least 50 times, many times a half dozen times or more before throwing a pitch to the next hitter.

Since many times he did it with a slow runner on with a small lead and absolutely no threat to steal, I surmised that he was doing it in an attempt to make the Cherryville hitters impatient and disrupt their timing. And with his quick delivery to the plate I think it was somewhat effective.....but very time consuming and frustrating to watch from a fan prospective. The game took over three hours to play.

Yea he does that to frustrate the batter it seems to work with his accuracy of throwing over and still throwing strikes is pretty impressive, he took a pitcher out of the game back and in high school playoffs cause he wore him out throwing back at him
