WC vs 71st 3a Title

Top 10 in 4A? These two teams? Not even close
4A is top heavy. There are only four 4A teams that will take these two 3A teams without much argument. Grimsley, Hough, Rolesville, and Weddington. East Forsyth, Indy and Cardinal Gibbons would be toss ups but I would lean WC over Indy. WC already beat Mallard Creek this season and both these 3A teams would absolutely beat Mooresville, Cleveland, Clayton, Mt. Tabor, and Richmond. Like I said both teams would be top ten 4A.

I agree with most of what you posted, however MC beat WC this year 14 to 12. WC did beat MC last year though.

Congrats to WC! They played great and shut down 71st mighty rushing attack. I was pulling for 71st but it wasn't meant to be. I don't know if there will ever be another title brought back to The Ville. In the new realignment I believe it will be even harder to break the cycle of Charlotte winning championships.

6A looks winnable, especially compared to 7A, no one really stands out as a top team imo. Especially the way the top teams in 7&8 stand out.

Side note but I sure hope Nance can recover quickly enough to join the already ongoing 71st basketball season. He has now played in 4 state championship games ( 2 in football, 2 in basketball) but lost all 4. Would love to see him go out with a state title in basketball this year.

One thing for sure, it won't be West Charlotte they'll play against if they get there in basketball. Our basketball team is horrific. They may not get to double digit wins this season.

Anyone know exactly what was wrong with his knee?

whats in store for this basketball season .... gonna try out the wheelchair basketball league?
Basketball program regression will definitely need to be addressed sooner rather than later. We definitely can't afford to allow it to go on a nearly 20 year nosedive like the football program.
Fingers crossed 🤞🏽

What are the issues they are facing? WC has a very good tradition in basketball.

How far do your ties go back to West Charlotte? Do you recall when West Charlotte basketball played Ashbrook and James Worthy in the first round of the 1979 state basketball tournament at the Charlotte Coliseum?

I am getting old lol. The last two MC/WC games are running together in my head but regardless they were both close competitive games and my main point stands😊.
3 out of 15 since 2007 for the Lions. They might be on to something.

We are talking about this season lol. Let those guys enjoy their title and their season.
How am I stopping them? One of the coaches on staff, I speak to 2,3 times a day. He had huge part in their success. Who is we? 🤷🏾‍♂️ I’m confident they’re having a blast with the new Hardware. 🏆👍🏾

An exerpt from the Fayetteville Observer regarding the injured 71st QB and the 71st basketball team:

The Falcons come in as the 3A East Regional champions after a historic season last year. After another deep run by the football team, they have a complete roster, but last year's star, Senior DeAndre Nance, was injured during that football run, so it remains to be seen if the 6-foot-3 Nance will suit up anytime soon. Nevertheless, with or without Nance, it's hard to beat Seventy-First on a nightly basis. It's defense is stifling, the 3-point shooting is lethal, and the coaching is evident.

I don't want to go into it in an open forum.
Think going 8A will help them a lot. You have to remember that losing Traylor, Kerr, and Houston before the 24 season was a game changer. Then factor in the Seniors they lost with Kone, Ollie, and Raymond. That's Coach Davis' top 6 players from a team that lost to CC in the playoffs. Remember WC was the only team to beat Central Cabarrus during its 95-1 streak with 2 ships. So its not as bad as it seems. TAke away those national games that they shouldnt have played IMHO they have much better records.

Of concern though is losing to Hough, Hopewell, and Harding types. Since winning the 3A ship its been downhill. NM and Chambers are understandable. But those other games?

Think WC bounces back big time next year in 8A. Their JV basketball team (2025) may be the best in the city possibly state. If you remember it was WC JV football team that led to the resurgence of the football program with several playing key roles on this years state title team. That 2023 WC JV is what will lead WC as teh early 8A favorites in football. This years WC basketball JV will lead WC 2026 basketball team. They are absolutely loaded and coached very well by Mobley/Davis. Much better days are ahead for WC basketball.

I appreciate your insight and analysis. Let's hope such is the case. We just can't afford for the basketball program to fall in the tank. It's past time for the ladies bball program to come back up too.

Girls basketball is a little more difficult. Since the state title in 2009 WC has had two winning seasons. In Girls basketball parity is already very rare. It only takes 2-3 really good girls to change a program around. Problem is WC is not getting the difference making girls as a whole and when they do get one they transfer out. Look at Chambers. Went from 3 state titles to 2 wins this year. Harding went from 3A 2x state title to the bottom. WC went from a premier girls team to its current state. Under Grimshaw and the prior coach they were always a contender. They won the state and came back with 1 win next season. Haven't really been right since.

The bigger issue is private schools take the best girl talent from the public schools and top girls don't want to play for a losing team at all making the gap even bigger. Look at Misa Garris at Garinger. Garinger went from a title/playoff contender to 2 wins overnight by one girl leaving. You have to know how to really coach women's basketball and know how to identify talent early and foster relationships.

Yeah, the privates and charters are really robbing the public girls' programs.
