Thanks to the Swain High School Athletics page on Facebook, here's the 16mm game film from the last game ever played (11/23/1979) at the old stadium on Schoolhouse Hill in Bryson City. A very different and much more intimate environment.

This was the 2nd round playoff game against East Lincoln. Swain went on to win their only 2A state title that year.

Great footage

Thanks OldMaroondevil, Good walk down memory lane!

Alright KevinfromSwain, I know you were a part of this Championship team, so who is the QB #11(Doug Plemmons?), and who is #32 in the backfield(Is that one of the Conley brothers?)

Well, I'm not Kevin, but I'm a year or two older than he is, so I can fill you in :)

#11 is Sam Pattillo. He also coached the last Swain championship team (in 2011). #32 is Lefus Tubby. One of the Conley boys was that age, but I'm not sure if they were still there in '79. Brett played through '76 (with Doug Plemmons... they were both seniors that year, as was I).

Thanks for the info, OldMaroonDevil!

Wonder how many other former players in this state have won a state championship as both a player and Coach at the same High School?....Can think of only a couple right of the top of my head(Dee Walsh of Robbinsville and Richard Grissom of Elkin)...Met and talked with Coach Pattillo duing that state championship season a few years ago, and enjoyed the conversation as I have past conversations with both Walsh and Grissom....Also remember the name Lefus Tubby, but was in service during that 79' year, and don't believe that I had a chance to see that Rosman/Swain game that year, won by the Maroondevils 24-0...It's also amazing to think that Swain beat(28-21) a Clayton team that has been a 4A school for many years, and still is today!

I remember Doug Plemmons because he's close to my age, and he was also a very good basketball player, best I remember?

Also remember the Conley brothers, and probably watched one of their games against Rosman in either 73 or 74 when Rosman was in the SMC, the first time?

Again, thanks for the link!

Just being a state championship player and coach is tough enough but at the same school is real hard to do.
