As for the officiating, North's penalties were definitely legit, we see it every Friday night. I know the T-ville fans were upset with the penalty (two actually) on the long TD pass. I can tell you with 100% confidence that both of those penalties on the Dogs were legit. The WR who caught the TD pass for T-ville DEFINITELY took off early and the play should have actually been called dead right there. I know the T-ville fans probably didn't see the flag because it was on the opposite side of the field, but the official threw that flag before the ball was even snapped, don't know why he didn't blow it dead. After the TD a T-ville player CLEARLY hit an ND player in the back well after the whistle to cause the personal foul penalty. Not being biased, those two penalties were clear as day.
As far as middle school goes, doesn't matter, I mean, Brown middle beat North, wanna take a bet who wins that game when they all get to their respective high schools? I take no stock in middle or even JV football. There is a HUGE difference between Wednesday/Thursday football, and Friday night football. I mean North's JV's ( many of the same players who lost to T-ville middle last year just beat the Dog JV's 42-6 in Cushwa Stadium Thursday night.
North’s JVs are likely better than Thomasville’s regardless. But Thursday was an anomaly. I was at the game.
Thomasville began the game with 16 players due to having to move players up because of the suspensions on varsity. In the first quarter, T’ville’s qb, arguably their best player, was injured. Down to 15.
Another kid blew his cool and walked off the field and threw his helmet, and remained about the twenty yard line, pouting. Coach Robertson sent him to the bench, rightfully. Down to 14.
Another kid with an unknown injury in the first half. Down to 13.
Player has what appeared to be a broken collar bone. Down to 12, which is how they finished.
Virtually everybody played both ways the entire game. A defensive lineman played wildcat back for three and a half quarters. Everybody in the place knew Thomasville’s only choice was to snap him the ball and hope he could find a hole. He has never played in the backfield.
Thomasville had no punter, thus four down territory on every possession, even inside their own twenty. The only time they punted, it was the defensive lineman trying to catch North off guard. He punted from seven yards deep, and it was partially blocked, giving North the ball on T’ville’s 15.
There were about ten sophomores that didn’t come out for football. Players that played jv last year. Apparently scared off by Coach Robertson’s insistence on discipline. Thank God! Coach will build a program, and he’ll do it the right way. Haven’t had anything remotely like that since Coach Brown. That’s why it was so important to bring in someone new. And kudos to the administration for backing him up.
North and Ledford will continue to dominate this conference, if for no other reason, sheer numbers. That’s not taking anything away from either program. You play the hand you’re dealt. But outside those two schools, Thomasville could easily win this conference. They outplayed the heck out of Salisbury, and gave it away. They ended up making a field goal. Our second string kicker didn’t.
As it is, even if Thomasville wins out, they likely don’t make the playoffs due to the Salisbury loss. And low numbers and discipline issues may keep us from winning the games we should coming up. But I’m still excited about the future.
Playing sports is a privilege. More coaches, administrators, parents, and fans should remember that. Football creates trophies. Football with character and accountability creates adults.
